    Self-catering holidays in Dorset

There are many words you can use to describe the majesty of Dorset - scenic, picturesque, utterly beautiful. When thinking of Dorset's rolling hills, craggy cliffs and secret coastline swimming pools, one word springs to mind, and that's 'unspoilt'.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Carole - Verified booking

      The property was spotlessly clean.

There is a well equipped kitchen with all appliances you need to make a holiday easier. The furnishings were comfortable in the lounge and bedroom and were to a high standard. Lighting in the lounge could be improved as it’s quite dim for reading. A rug on the floor would be beneficial as the stone floor is cold and stark. A few ornaments and pictures would make the property more homely. The bedrooms could also benefit better lighting and power points which are located near mirrors. The second bedroom could have a zip bed system to enable the 2 singles to become a double for adults who are staying. The second bathroom is located through the corridor and then through the lounge so quite a trek to reach the shower or loo. The property is very remote so there is no opportunity to walk to the local shop or pub. A car is essential for getting about & there are no pavements if you wish to stretch your legs for a short walk. The housekeeper on the last day was very rude & was standing outside the front door with her cleaning materials before 10am. She informed us that we had 3 minutes to leave. She left the gate open and fortunately our dog didn’t escape as we had him on the lead. Had the front door been open a dog could have escaped. Advertising this as dog friendly accommodation the cleaners should be more aware of the precautions to be taken. Overall a high standard cottage, if you like remoteness and use a car for the entire stay. The property has a clumsy layout and could do with a few more home comforts.

Perfectly placed with everything close at hand.

Lovely welcome pack and overall clean. We had a wonderful time. Grandchildren loved it!….However a few things need attention; there was various patches of black mould in shower around edges at the sealant. More importantly when using the shower the water did not drain away. Very slow and needs unblocking. My grandchildren had to stand in the dirty water coming back up from the drain during a ‘quick shower’ only. Needs sorting as could be a health issue. I did explain to the cleaner who said it’s a continuous problem because of drains on site that council need to sort. So needs sorting or at least use of a drain unblocker! Afterall we are paying for good useable facilities during our stay and could only have brief showers as risk of shower tray overflowing. The skirting board and wall by the doors behind the curtain in lounge/kitchen area showing signs of water damage with black staining and cracked paintwork . Furniture needs refreshing/updating ; tv unit and kitchen table look shabby with damage to tops. Right hand door to double doors on lounge area needs attention gets stuck and cannot be opened easily signs of rust on bottom of door. Other chalets nearby have been updated and do make this one stand out as needing refurb. Including smartening up outside. Once these areas are attended too will be perfect!

I have marked the property down simply on the basis of parking.

When we arrived there was nowhere to park so I parked on the neighbour’s drive (no. 16) for a few minutes to unload our heavy cases and dog crate. The neighbour called down over his intercom to my wife demanding we move the car immediately. I ignored this but we were unable to park in Diments Garden during our stay and I was worried how I could load the car on departure. Luckily I was able to get a place on the very last morning so I avoided another confrontation- I was planning to park on the pavement outside no 16’s drive. During the week I didn’t see a single car on no 16s drive. If I owned Rooemakers Cottage I would see if he’d let people park on his drive for, say, 30 minutes for a reasonable sum. It would make a huge difference. We were able to park in Hospital Lane every day which wasn’t really a problem otherwise. Other minor points - my wife suggested a make up mirror would be good. Our granddaughter slept in the upstairs room on Sunday afternoon and my son thought the curtains were very thin so it was very light in the room. Otherwise everything was absolutely fine - clean and comfortable.

The cottage was not as clean as I would like.

Basins in both bathrooms appeared to have had a cursory clean however dirt and debris behind taps. Shower had dust/sand in the bottom and around the outside ledge. Skirting boards in shower room were also very dusty. The sofas in the lounge were dreadfully uncomfortable, sagging and no support whatsoever. However we did report this and Sykes’s made the owner aware. She came to see for herself and was very apologetic but obviously was unable to provide replacements whilst we were there which we understood. We have stayed at Hedge End cottages previously but felt that they are now a little tired and in need of refurbishment. Definitely not worthy of a 5 ✔️ rating. On the plus side we did feel that both Sykes and the owner had taken our complaints seriously. Also a nice comfy bed. The cottage is surrounded by lovely countryside and is in easy reach of lots of coastal resorts and beautiful villages.

We love staying in the chalets next to Monmouth Beach.

The location is fantastic. This is the first time that we’ve stayed in The Beach Hut and we would be happy to return. The chalet was bright and airy and well equipped. The are some relatively minor improvements that we would suggest: 1. The pillows were too firm for all 3 of us. In the end we had to borrow some from our friend who has a neighbouring chalet. 2. There was nowhere to store clothes in the master bedroom. There is no chest of drawers and only child-size coat hangers were provided for the clothes rail. I ended up having to share the chest of drawers in the single bedroom with my daughter and my husband had to live out of his suitcase for a week. 3. There is no outdoor tap to rinse sandy beachwear. All of the other chalets that we have stayed in have had this and it’s essential. Without it the shower ends up full of sand.
