What our customers say about their holidays

    • Piearce - Verified booking

We liked the location, the welcome pack and the toiletries.

The cottage smelt unclean as soon as we entered and it was very dirty on inspection. We had to wash all cutlery, crockery, glasses and cookware. The inside of the kitchen cupboards were disgusting with grease and dirt on the shelves. Top and bottom of microwave had a film of grease over it. The internal kitchen bin was filthy with bits of food and drink spills down the sides of it. The kettle had not been emptied and was dirty on the outside. The toaster was dirty and had not been cleaned. The skirting boards throughout were dusty. Underneath the lampstand which was corroded and dirty, and behind the sofa was dirty with many dead insects. Some of the bedroom drawers smelt stale and we couldn't use them for clothing. Carpets were grubby and need replacing. The windows and frames inside and out were disgusting and obviously had not been cleaned for some time. The two roller blinds in the kitchen and bathroom were dirty with mould and dead creatures stuck to them. The bedroom curtains were also grubby. The sofa looked worn and tired as others had commented previously in their reviews. I am glad that we took our own throws to sit on. The tall candle holder was full of cobwebs inside and there were used candles in all of the holders. We brought scented candles to try to improve the horrible aroma within. The small patio area was full of weeds and above the front door were overhanging bushes which made it difficult to stand to unlock/lock the door. There was a small bistro set in front of the cottage but unfortunately this was rusty and dirty so we did not use it. Overall, the cottage was dirty which is sad as with a deep clean and replacing worn items it would be beautiful. We left the cottage cleaner, tidier and smelling fresh on our departure. Although the owners lived next door, we felt it pointless talking to them as they obviously has not taken note of previous guest comments.

      Firstly we loved Lyme Regis.

However finding the property and key safe situation was a different story. We were not told until we had paid the full price of the holiday about the keysafe situation. We have used Sykes Cottages before and after payment we have been given instructions and the owners number which gives us as seniors peace of mind incase of any problems or difficulties. Your previous properties have been perfect no problems at all and even a welcome pack to greet you not here sadly. The garden isn’t inviting as it looks in the photographs. We were looking forward to using the deckchairs but they were in a poor state tucked up the side of the building. In fact all the garden furniture was in a poor state and it was a lot of money to us what we paid to be disappointed like this. It’s supposed to have a washing machine but it hasn’t that shouldn’t be stated. Yes it states the steps to the bathroom are step but that is a bit of an understatement for health and safety reasons there should be a rail put there. The extraction fan was making terrible noises so we were nervous to use it so refrained and that wasn’t ideal as there is no window in the said bathroom. We didn’t stay the whole term of the holiday we had to return home the bed was so uncomfortable we were suffering with terrible backache. Luckily it was very warm so didn’t require to use the duvet so layed that on the mattress to try and make it a bit more comfortable.

I stayed for a week in April with family and a dog. I know the area well and found the location of the cottage excellent as near the lovely village of Stoke Abbott, the small town of Beaminster with all it offers and with the coast is in easy reach. The walking from the cottage in the surrounding hills is fantastic and the village and pub are in easy reach through the wood, which was filled with bluebells during our stay. The cottage has been renovated to a high standard and while it looks rustic ,the living area has a fabulous stone floor with underfloor heating and a woodburner for cooler evenings. The kitchen and bathrooms are of a similarly high quality . There is plentiful heating and hot water. The bedrooms are pleasingly spacious. The furnishings, though slightly quirky, are good and the beds and bedding of good quality. Fabulous art work especially in the living area. The kitchen is very well equipped but we did find the woodburning Esse stove rather difficult. There is a small separate electric cooker but this is not really adequate for cooking for a family. I suggest a replacement electric range cooker would be ideal. The outside area is very extensive and wild. This is lovely but it would be nice to have better outdoor furniture at the front of the house capable of seating the whole party for cups of tea and outdoor lunches. I would definitely stay here again and hopefully will do.

I wouldn’t say this is a 4 star property at all.

As most of the reviews have said the cleanliness really lets it down. A villager warned us of this as we pulled up. We had to wash all crockery and cutlery. The kitchen cupboards were greasy and dirty as was the oven. We chose to eat out all week. Lack of cupboard space meant our food stayed in the bags. The lounge cannot be cleaned in between lets as the dust in the corners and behind the TV had been there a long long time, as had the dead flies on the windowsills. The small outside space could be made to look lovely and useable if it was weeded and flowers were in the planter instead of the dandelion and decent chairs were provided, not the rusty set that is there. I hope Skyes cottages work with the owners to make this the lovely cottage it could be.

We chose Cowdea Cottage for the location and were not disappointed.

Not only is it in a beautiful part of the world but access to many other places is easy and close by. The cottage is spacious and well equipped, with good wifi and phone access. We found the furnishings a bit dated - not our style - but this was easy to overlook, sitting in the sunroom or the garden, looking across the meadow, hearing the birds. We did not find any walks in the immediate vicinity and the road was busy with locals and farm vehicles, so not easy to walk. But a short drive away in Bettiscombe you could park at the Community Centre and follow the trails. The owners were friendly and helpful and despite living in the adjoining farmhouse, kept their distance and gave us our privacy. A wonderful tranquil and restful spot.
