What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sue - Verified booking

The apartment was larger than expected and had all the essentials required.

We did not expect to find washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, bin liners or cleaning cloths so this was nice. The kitchen was well stocked of pots and pans and all essential cooking equipment. We were able to cook our meals in the apartment without any issues. The beds were very comfortable and both bedrooms very spacious. I do not usually sleep well for a couple of days when being somewhere different but I slept well every night so a big bonus for me. There was a hoover, iron and ironing board, clothes airer and cleaning equipment - we did not use them all but good to know they are available if required. We did use some of the cleaning equipment to clean the patio doors to the balcony so we could see the beautiful view from them - although this could be an endless tasks if there is lots of wind and rain which is why the doors and windows were not clear. The shower was dripping when we arrived but we were told this will be sorted by the plumber which it was and the shower was replaced which was much better and the water pressure was good, however, we did run out of hot water when all 4 of us showered and 3 washed their (long) hair which was more time consuming and therefore not enough hot water for all. I appreciated the little sewing box in the drawer as I needed to use this which meant I was able to wear the item of clothing again. We also played some of the board games that were in the drawers although we had brought some of our own in case of rainy days - which we only had 2. We enjoyed looking around the area, including all the shops and did plenty of walking. The beach was also great for the kids and their fossil hunting and my husband did some fishing off the beach whilst I managed some sunbathing for a few hours (until the cloud came over). Having the garage to park the car was great and it also kept it dry from the couple of windy wet days we had. We have a large car but was able to fit it in the garage although everyone got out before parking it as there was not much room to the side even when parked right over to one side. We visited Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and Monkey World (this one is a favourite of ours and we try and go once yearly). Weymouth was lovely but we did not manage to visit Portland which was recommended to us.

We stayed at Dormouse cottage during the Feb half term.

Here are our comments: Good points: Able to get into the property easily, and actually got an email the day before saying it had already been cleaned so we could arrive whatever time we wanted. Beds all very clean and comfy, we all slept brilliantly Cute, traditional cottage, with many features you would expect (this properly has steep stairs and low beams as you would expect a cottage to have) Bathroom clean with a brand new seal on shower screen, so no leaks when using the shower Fully enclosed rear garden to let our dog out into, this was great Good TV that worked well, and really good wifi even with multiple devices connected Microwave, fridge, cooker and other kitchen appliances all clean and worked fine. Warm and easy to heat to the temperature you want Arrived to a bottle of wine, tea and coffee making things and pre packeted biscuits waiting for us, this was a lovely touch! Not so good points: Other than the basics you would expect some areas of the cottage needed a good clean. I think this isn’t helped by all the decorative items around the cottage. I went prepared and wiped round with detox wipes. The sofa wasn’t great and was covered in dog hair. We spent about 20 minutes hoovering this. It did have a lot of scatter cushions and blankets on it so we removed these and didn’t put them back on then gave it a good hoover. The front door was quite stiff and needed a good pull / push to make sure it was shut properly. Others have commented on the noise from the windows, we didn’t really notice this too much and it definitely wasn’t an issue for us. Overall we had a great stay. It was comfy, we slept well and could easily sort food etc. The location is also great with plenty of things to do in and around the village. Plus our 7 year old son also really enjoyed it and slept well. Since returning the owner of the cottage contacted us for feedback and was genuinely interested in what we had to say and how he can make improvements. Again, Another great touch! Thanks for a lovely stay, we are booking for a return visit later in the year!

      Very disappointing and dirty cottage.

It needs a huge amount of work done to it - painting, new windows etc… Generally in need of a thorough deep clean. There were cobwebs everywhere, the house smelled awful when we arrived but realised this is because of the hoover - which stank to high heaven when you used it. The carpet is filthy and stained. Windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for over 6 months. Some windows are rotten. The towels were stained with yellow marks. Behind the bed was disgusting! It’s not at all like the photos on Sykes or Dream Cottages website- the sofa is grey and grubby - not cream, the table is too big for the cottage and not white. It is very poorly stocked - the only saving grace was that we ate out every night. There were no cleaning products apart from washing up liquid and multi surface cleaner - so had to use that to clean the bathroom and mop the floor before we left. Don’t know why we were provided with dishwasher tablets as there’s no dishwasher and I certainly wouldn’t wash my clothes with dishwasher tablets. Also situated on a very busy, noisy road - don’t think that you will enjoy a peaceful breakfast outside as trucks and cats rush past! A very overpriced and underwhelming cottage. We contacted Sykes about a few things and they did offer to get a cleaner in on the Thursday - we said it wasn’t worth it but hoped that the cottage would be cleaned properly for the next guests. They also provided us with a clothes airer (as we’d had to drape washing over shower screens, radiators etc…) and a new cafetière on the Thursday. I do feel they need to update their photos and description of the property as it is definitely NOT the way it appears on their site. However, Burton Bradstock is a beautiful village with fabulous walks and places to eat - just don’t stay in this cottage!

We had a good week in Burton Bradstock, the weather was kind and the cottage is well situated with excellent views.

However, we do have to make some comments in regard to your listing and description (some in our opinion very important) Kitchen - it is rather tiny and dysfunctional with a large fridge freezer on the opposite wall to the sink leaving a space no more than 24 inches – not enough room for more than 1 person in the kitchen at a time. For 4 adults there really weren’t enough large saucepans and we don’t believe that 4 mugs and 3 cups and saucers and a teapot for 3 mugs is adequate, especially with the use of a dishwasher. We couldn’t find glasses that would suit an aperitive or morning fruit juice unless you count the 3 coke glasses Your description clearly states that the property is an annexe. This fails to mention that the owner’s property is separated by a pair of internal glazed doors. It doesn’t give one adequate privacy, and the fact that this is not mentioned is misleading at best. Your description states there is an upstairs bedroom which is in fact a mezzanine room with open access to the lounge area leaving no adequate privacy for the occupants, and your description is again misleading Finally, we read in a review somewhere that the owners were friendly and approachable. This was not our experience. We did not receive the courtesy of a call to see if everything was OK, and the 2 times we saw the lady of the house in the garden it was really just a brief ‘hello’. Not good enough in our opinion if you are renting your property and live in the adjoining accommodation. In the circumstance our belief is that the rental cost is not value for money.

      Pros: very competitive pricing.

Great location for fit walkers. Some superb eateries and stunning views within a 15-30 min walk. Again- the views were gorgeous especially in the evening. One word- SUNSETS! Accommodation was very clean, fully functional and thoughtfully appointed (although we had to buy a knife for cooking, which we left behind.) Lovely views and the sounds of actual doves. Cons: a bit of road noise and a rather fast road to pull out onto. Ideally driving instructions would put the name of the main house rather than The Doves- however I recognised the house from the photos. Would recommend interior privacy drapes on the french doors separating the Doves from the main house. It was unsettling to not have control over that, especially right next to our bedroom. They would also provide more sound insulation. It wasn’t loud, but you could just hear the TV at night and that made it feel a little too close. The only other issue we had was that the double bed was just a tad too small and too soft, and to be honest we didn’t sleep well at all because of it. Admittedly we are used to a bigger bed. All in all though, this worked well for a family of four who did a fair amount of cooking and some laundry. It was very clean, very quaint, very “Dorset” with unique features and beautiful views. The owners seemed friendly yet gave us our space. I’d go again for a weekend in a heartbeat.
