Holiday Cottages in Whitby

Looking out over the wild North Sea and surrounded by the North Yorkshire National Park, the historic seaside town of Whitby is the perfect place for a cottage getaway. Offering idyllic natural beauty, unique historical sites and classic seaside charm, it is no wonder that visitors have been flocking to this gem of the Yorkshire coast for centuries.

Whether you choose to spend your holiday scouring the boutique shops that line the cobbled streets in the centre of Whitby or prefer to head out to Moors in search of rare wildlife, you’re guaranteed to be surprised by what you find here. Given it’s coastal location, Whitby is also the perfect spot to enjoy watersports, a relaxing day at the beach or some traditional fun and games along the Victorian pavilion. Whether you book a short break to recharge your batteries or want to make the most of everything on offer over a couple of weeks, a Whitby holiday is sure to leave an impression.

Wild Wild Country

Whitby is the perfect base for exploring the North York Moors National Park, with fantastic road routes taking you into some of the North of England’s most wild and rugged terrain within minutes. Don’t forget to pack your walking boots as there is parking available throughout the park, and some fantastic walking routes for all abilities to enjoy.

Heather moorland is one of the rarest habitats in the world so as well as enjoying the rich colours that fill the landscape throughout the summer, there is fantastic wildlife to watch out for all year round. The protected park is the largest continuous heather moorland in the UK and home to a wide range of rare birds, small mammals such as voles and weasels and adders, the UK’s only poisonous snake. If you want to find out more about the rich and varied wildlife here, a number of local tour companies offer guided walks.

Coastal Treasures

Whitby has not one, but two, fantastic beaches to enjoy. With brightly coloured beach huts, glorious golden sands and shimmering rock pools, it is no wonder they’ve both been awarded Blue Flag status. While you can be paddling in the surf a stone's throw from the centre of Whitby, there are also plenty of other great coastal spots to enjoy nearby and Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Helmsley are all within walking distance.

A number of these spots are dog-friendly but be sure to check local signs before letting the pooch off the lead. If sandy beaches aren’t your thing, there are also coastal paths along the cliff edge from where you can look out to sea without getting your feet wet. If you’re looking to blow the cobwebs away, a bracing hike along Cleveland Way towards Robin Hood’s Bay is highly recommended. The coast is also popular with fossil hunters and some of the UK’s largest ammonites have been discovered here over the years, so be sure to look out the distinctive swirled patterns in the rocks below.

If you’re looking for a more traditional seaside holiday, Whitby delivers on every level. The Victorian-era Whitby pavilion always has something great going on, including theatre, festivals and art events. And, of course, you’ll find all the trappings of the British seaside, from charming little shops to amusement arcades and tea rooms, and, it’s widely acknowledged, the best fish and chips in the country.

Sail Back in Time

Given its coastal location, it is unsurprising that Whitby has a rich maritime history. In addition to having deep links with the fishing and whaling industries, the town was also once a hub of maritime exploration. There are now many quirky and interesting sites from where you can find out more about the charming town’s former life.

During the heyday of British naval exploration, Whitby’s shipyards were world-famous. Captain Cook’s Endeavour was built here and you can find out more about his historic voyage to Australia at the fascinating HM Endeavour Experience. If you climb aboard the only lifesize replica of the ship in the Northern hemisphere, there are plenty of interactive experiences for the whole family to enjoy and great views out over the bay where you may even spot a dolphin or two!

For more of the town’s rich history, you can walk into Whitby town to enjoy the Captain Cook Memorial Museum. Here you’ll find a treasure trove of items including Cook’s letters, a model of his ship ‘Resolution’ and other interesting documents.

Gothic Wonders

As well as these strong ties to maritime life, Whitby’s Gothic past continues to inspire visitors from around the world. The dramatic ruins of the 7th century Whitby Abbey inspired Bram Stoker’s famous 1897 novel, Dracula. Visitors can also soak up this history at a host of fantastic visitor attractions. Perched atop the East Cliff headland, the Abbey can be reached from the town by the famous 199 steps and the inspiration of some of the novel’s characters can still be found etched into the gravestones.

The Dracula Experience is sure to fright and delight fans of the macabre, and Whitby Goth Weekend and Tomorrows Ghosts festivals celebrate the Goth subculture twice yearly. Whitby’s most famous literary visitor is memorialised on a seat overlooking the very view that inspired his writing. The the Bram Stoker International Film Festival also sees fans of horror and science fiction flocking to visit.

Independent Shopping and Award Winning Restaurants

Whitby is known for its many traditional independent shops and jewellers. Many of these centuries-old shops specialise in celebrating the local Whitby Jet gemstone. If you’re looking to pick up a gift for that someone special or a treat for yourself to remind you of your stay in Whitby, the naturally formed gems make a dazzling addition to any jewellery collection.

After a busy day of shopping, there are also great restaurants and cafes to refuel in the town centre. Abbey Wharf sits on the East side of the River Esk and is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the finest seafood restaurants in the North of England. With fantastic views, welcoming staff and an ever-changing menu of fresh seafood and classic dishes, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day.
