What our customers say about their holidays

    • Steven - Verified booking

The Cottage is in a very good location and makes it so easy for all shops, restaurants etc.

Due to its central location and it can be noisy, although we were there at Easter bank holiday weekend. This may have influenced it but noise went on till 4am. The main issue I had with the Cottage, is that it is very small. We went as a family of two adults, two kids and a dog. The house was not big enough to accommodate us all. This was particularly evident downstairs, which is just one room. There wasn’t enough seating space for us all to sit on the settee. There is a breakfast bar in this room but the stools provided, are not very comfortable. There isn’t really enough space to cook, particularly if people are sat at the breakfast bar. When cooking I literally had to sit at one of the seats. The whole accommodation is extremely dark. Whilst accepting that it is a Cottage, the windows do not open in three out of four of the rooms. This makes the Cottage quite stuffy and oppressive. This is not helped by the fact you don’t have control of the heating. This comes on at set times whether you need it to or not. The bedroom on the first floor is a decent size and accommodates two children. It also has storage space and a TV with DVD. There is no DVD player downstairs, nor can you stream your phone to the TV. This meant if we wanted to watch a film as a family, we had to go to the kids bedroom. The bathroom has nice facilities with the exception of the hot tap. It is a Triton hot tap that produces very little hot water. The bedroom on the second floor is contained in the roof. It does not have any room to stand up in, other than the foot of the bed. It’s basically a bed in a room. We both found it quite difficult to get in and out of bed. The Cottage does provide safe secure parking, which is needed in Whitby. However, as described in the advert this is 5 mins away up a steep hill. Overall if there was just two of you, you could make it work. It didn’t work for us as a family. Having stayed in multiple Cottages in Whitby, this was the most disappointing. Due to the issues we left a day early.

The property is on a quiet, quaint road and we had no issues with noise.

Despite the mention of the possibility of stairs being an issue, we didn’t find this a problem as long as we took care - the steps are quite shallow and some of the ceilings on the stairwells are low - but we found them ok. The kitchen had all utensils we needed for a real self catering break and there were books and games provided too. Beds were clean and comfortable. We had one issue, with the cleanliness, which was an issue at the start of our break as we did have to clean. There was quite a lot of dust throughout, the carpets needed vacuuming, the bottom of the toilets needed extra attention, crumbs were on the work surfaces in the kitchen and our dog found a bone of some description on the kitchen floor, also the front door was really quite grubby inside. This has been fed back to Sykes already and so hopefully this will not be an issue for future bookings. We were advised that the cottage are not obliged to provide cleaning products, which seemed odd if they’d like you to keep the place clean, and so we did have to purchase our own antibacterial cleaner. Dishwasher tablets were plentiful however. Be aware that milk and coffee aren’t necessarily provided on short breaks, but there are a few little shops nearby to purchase these. We love Whitby, and hopefully our feedback is taken as constructive rather than negative - the hubby also mentioned that an oven glove would be helpful!

Overall, the house was nicely furnished.

Unfortunately, the inaccurate information about location ('right turning 50 yards after Yorkshire Cottages office' rather than 'immediately after') meant we ended up going round the one-way system again trying to find it. There was no scratch-off parking card in the property, which meant we had to drive back into town to find somewhere that sold them. We drove to the Co op (as it was the only place we knew with free parking). They didn't sell them, but a staff member gave us a parking disc. Fortunately, we found a traffic warden near the property who showed us where we could park overnight. By this time, we'd wasted over an hour of our holiday, and tempers were frayed. Not the start we wanted for a break that was meant to be a treat! Perhaps you should consider posting the scratch cards to customers in advance of their holiday to avoid this happening again. Inside the property, there is a strong smell of damp in the kitchen and black mould on the stair wall. I have a rare lung disease (aspergillosis) which is caused (and exacerbated) by black mould, so I was unable to use the kitchen. Again - very disappointing. Finally, the mirrors in the bedrooms need hanging on the walls. I had to sit on the floor to be able to use the mirror to do my hair and make up. Not ideal!

Just returned from our 4 day stay in this lovely cottage which is extremely clean with everything you would need to make it home from home.

The location is great for easy access to lots of places in North Yorkshire, both by car or train. The train station is 5 minutes walk and it takes 10 minutes to get to Whitby or Grosmont. Also bus access to Whitby and Pickering and all locations in between. We got the train to Grosmont and walked to Goathland then got the bus back to the cottage. We do have a car but chose to use public transport, parking can work out expensive. I have marked the cottage down on comfort as the mattress was far too hard for my liking. I don’t mind a firm mattress but this was hard, and also when the other half moved in bed, it was like being on a trampoline. However it didn’t stop us from getting a good nights sleep. The heating was preset to come on at 6am and 4pm for an hour each time, and we couldn’t figure out how to override that, or increase the temperature to more than 20 degrees. We did contact the owner who was prepared to change the timing of the heating which they could do remotely. We made good use of the log burner however that can work out quite expensive. There is a small garden to the front, which is not secure for dogs, and no rear exit. We would definitely stay here again - 4 days wasn’t long enough to visit all the places we wanted to visit.

The cottage is small and quaint and has retained lots of original features.

The pictures of the cottage in times gone by was a great feature. It has been renovated well and has modern amenities and a great kitchen/dining area, it is a small cottage but has everything we needed as a family of four. It is in a very central location, it is of note parking was an additional expense and for the week was 70.00. The owner was responsive to communication and was helpful with instructions, arrival and departure was easy and hassle free. There are a couple of issues that did impact our stay one was the sofa which is in dire need of replacement and the master bed which is also in need of a new mattress, if these two issues were rectified it would be a five star stay. A tip for Whitby is book the restaurants that have good reviews as they will be booked up and won’t accept walk ins.
