Get away from it all with our Northumberland Holiday Cottages

Northumberland is England's northernmost county up by the Scottish Borders and is a must-visit holiday destination for fun, adventure, history, and outstanding natural beauty.

Book one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and you'll find yourself in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the countryside is wild and rugged and the heritage coastline is studded with beautiful hidden coves and sandy beaches.

With hundreds of beautiful Northumberland self-catering properties, Snaptrip is your one-stop shop to find the holiday home of your dreams. Whether you're travelling with friends, family, or your special someone, take a look through our wide selection of countryside and beachside cottages and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Why choose a Northumberland weekend break or staycation?

The county of Northumberland is one of the most sparsely populated locations in the UK, making it the ideal place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Over a quarter of the county is made up of the Northumberland National Park, so if you're looking for a proper escape from the stresses of everyday life, you couldn't find a more perfect destination. From wide sandy beaches, pretty moorlands dotted with heather, roaring waterfalls, rolling hillsides, and ancient woodlands, there is plenty to explore.

The beaches in Northumberland are clean and pristine. Imagine white sand, glorious blue skies, and even bluer waters. Bamburgh Beach has got to be one of our favourites. Bamburgh is an idyllic coastal village with everything you could want from a small seaside town. The beach is exquisite for relaxing and playing, and the village is lovely for walking around. There's also the impressive Bamburgh Castle to explore if you fancy a break from the beach.

To experience the whole of Northumberland's epic coastline, join the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route is a whopping 62 miles long, and while it can take up to seven days to complete, it's well worth the amble. You'll see the beautiful coast, incredible beaches, and sweet fishing villages.

Northumberland is a historic county littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed with their imposing fortresses, castles and monasteries.

There are more castles here than in any other county, 39 to be exact, and each one has its own character. These castles go back to the Norman times, built to defend the region from invaders. Some favourites include the majestic Alnwick (famed as the filming location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh castles, the haunting ruins of Warkworth, and the isolated Dunstanburgh Castle.

Speaking of history, Northumberland is the home of Hadrian's Walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most famous frontier of the Roman Empire. The walls span 73 miles from coast to coast but are the most intact in Northumberland. The wall weaves up and down hills, and a walk along it offers the chance to see the remains of towers, turrets, and forts.

If you want to do something truly memorable, make sure you go stargazing during your visit. The incredibly low levels of light pollution make Northumberland an amazing place to see the stars in all their glory, especially if you stay in the designated dark sky area around Kielder. It's even possible to spot the Milky Way and identify planets from the observatory.

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a trip to Holy Island. This four-square-mile island can only be accessed at low tide. While you're there, visit the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle, perched high up on a volcanic rock. The island also has a small harbour, a nature reserve, a pretty village, and priory ruins.

We've only scratched the surface of things to do in this incredible county. To experience all there is to discover, stay in one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and plan an epic adventure.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Confirmed Guest - Verified booking

Fantastic cottage, lovely hosts, beautiful location, close to everything we wanted to do in Northumberland. We would definitely go again. The property was stylish, high quality, had extra touches, both inside and out. The care and attention to every detail was obvious, both when I booked, and exceeded expectations on arrival. Even if we hadn’t stocked up on provisions on the way, we would have had everything we needed for the first evening and the next morning, if we had turned up empty handed. We loved that the provisions were substantially locally sourced. It was clean and neutral so that we didn’t feel that we were staying in someone else’s house – but at the time there was warmth and personality. There was extra touches in the supply of games (we played scrabble),local maps and guides. The kitchen equipment was very good – we didn’t use it much, but it seemed that had we chosen to cook from scratch, we would have had everything we needed. Christine and Alan, the owners, were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Coquet Cottages is without doubt the best holiday cottage specialist I’ve used.

It was a lovely, cosy welcoming cottage in a brilliant location central to lots of wonderful sights of interest.

We have been to Northumberland 5 times and this was the best cottage. The decor was homely and it was very well furnished with comfortable beds. The kitchen was well equipped and a joy to cook in. We were very comfortable there. A couple of very small issues for the owners attention include: •There was no cutlery holder in the dishwasher •The leaflets could be more up to date (one was from 2016) • There were no teaspoons! We had to buy some. We left them in the cottage for others. • for the cost of the cottage the welcome pack could have been a little more extensive and exciting! We note that others had a welcome hamper years ago! We really liked Lesbury village. We supported the community shop which we thought was a great initiative. Unfortunately The Coach House was shut for renovation, otherwise we would have supported them as well. We highly recommend The Hope and Anchor in Alnmouth - fantastic Italian food and friendly staff. We would definitely return to Willlow Cottage and recommend to friends. Thank you for a lovely stay :)

Our third visit to this wonderful cottage! Christine and Alan continue to be fabulous hosts and we thank them for continuing to share this peaceful part of the world with us. Bamburgh remains stunning. If you like great food then try the Milan in Wooler – the seafood pasta & risotto dishes were yummy with friendly staff. The voucher kindly provided by Christine and Alan for Lowick village store was easily spent and we purchased other goodies there too.We visited Barter Books in Alnwick, along with a great festive light display at the Alnwick Gardens. Nice walks around Wooler and Warkworth were enjoyed. If you like a good pub meal then try the excellent Tankerville Arms at Ellingham. Chatton village store is also worth calling into for knitted items which support an autism charity.

Cottage is so lovely and comfortable.

Everything there that you need. Lovely soft bath towels too! Cottage is close to all places to visit and the location of the cottage is so peaceful and quiet allowing you to unwind. It’s a shame that there isn’t a local pub within walking distance as then it would have been perfect for us as we wouldn’t have had to use the car at all. Our only complaint that we can think of if asked was that it is a little untidy at the back of the cottage as you walk out of the gate (lots of weeds on the gravel). Other than that this cottage is just perfect. We will definitely be returning again! Thank you

A wonderful week in a fantastic cottage. So peaceful – just the sound of the birds and the stream. Took time to slow down & refresh ourselves – so easy to do in this gem of a place. The weather was kind, no coats all week. We thought we knew Northumberland but still managed to discover new places. We loved the beaches and were delighted to find a new one that was almost deserted! Had a great meal at Milan in Wooler – a vibrant little place & the staff so polite & helpful. Thank you for the hamper – so kind. We won’t hesitate to recommend you.
