Enjoy your holiday your way with Lake District holiday cottages

It's hard to do the Lake District justice, using nothing more than words.

Seeing lush green hills roll out into the distance, miles further than the eye can see. Watching the sun bounce playfully across the crystal waters of Lake Windermere, as the smell of dew drops fills the air. Listening, as all around, an array of wildlife, from red squirrels to golden eagles, grey seals to red deer, wake to another beautiful morning and head about their day in the national park.

A holiday in the Lake District boasts more than just stunning natural scenery. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also rich in culture and history, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a varied and exciting break.

From picturesque villages steeped in literary history and home to the likes of William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter to bustling market towns with their museums and picturesque streets, there is plenty to explore on your Lake District holiday beyond its breathtaking natural landscapes, dazzling lakes and spectacular scenery.

To complete your trip, base yourself in one of our gorgeous Lake District self-catering cottages. Each one has been hand-selected to ensure you get the holiday you deserve. Take a look through our huge selection, and let's start planning your dream break in the Lakes.

Why choose a Lake District weekend break or staycation?

If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then a trip to the Lake District could be just what you're looking for.

Picture idyllic towns and villages surrounded by spectacular scenery, mirror-like lakes glistening in the sun, dramatic waterfalls thundering down lush green valleys, and majestic peaks around every turn.

The UNESCO World Heritage site is a dream come true for nature lovers, and the lakes are the main attraction. Windermere, Ullswater, and Coniston Water are just a few of the incredible lakes, with many of them offering boat trips and a variety of walks.

The area's name is a little deceiving, as there are also countless dramatic peaks and mountains in the Lake District. Scafell Pike is England's highest peak, and you can climb it if you're feeling up to the challenge. Or why not scale the beautiful rugged fells at Great Langdale or Helvellyn?

One of our favourite Lake District towns is Keswick, which has a brilliant location for exploring the beauty of the area.

The town is full of charm and character, with plenty of cafes, tearooms, ancient inns and pubs, shops, and a relaxed atmosphere. Within easy reach of Keswick, you'll find walks to Bowder Stone and Derwentwater, as well as the Coledale Peaks, which are a great choice if you're looking for a more challenging hike. Hop on a boat trip and explore Lake Derwentwater, or take it easy in the town and have fun at top attractions such as Puzzling Place and the famous Pencil Museum.

Another must-visit destination in the Lake District is Cumbria, home to the Lake District National Park.

Cumbria also includes part of the North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales, so you have lots of options of where to spend your days. There are six districts in Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, and Eden. Make sure you visit the pretty village of Windermere and walk along the beautiful lake. You can immerse yourself in history and see some of the earliest stone circles in the UK, including the Castlerigg Stone Circle and the Swinside Stone Circle.

For literary fans, head to Beatrix Potter's farmhouse in Hill Top and discover more about her animal characters at The World of Beatrix Potter. You can also marvel at the views and scenery that inspired poet William Wordsworth and see his house and museum located next to Grasmere.

With so much to see and do in this magical destination, staying in one of our Lake District holiday cottages provides the perfect base to discover all the natural beauty and fun attractions it has to offer.

Choose from hundreds of beautiful Lake District holiday rentals

With so many incredible attractions on offer, choosing which Lake District holiday cottage to stay in might be a bit of a challenge. Luckily, we have something for everyone and every occasion. So, whether you're going on holiday with friends, family, or that special someone, you'll find the perfect accommodation to suit your needs.

From stunning rustic stone-built cottages to sleek modern holiday homes, whatever you're after, we'll help you find the ideal place to stay for your holiday. Our range of Lake District cottages offers all your favourite features and everything you'd want, from private parking and stunning scenery to a private garden and space for the whole family.

If you're on the hunt for something a little more specific, use the filters and search preferences to find dog-friendly cottages, cottages with hot tubs or swimming pools, gorgeous self-catering options overlooking lakes, or holiday cottages just a short drive away from historic towns and the great outdoors.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Michelle - Verified booking

      Well where do i start.

The most lovely of setting. In a quite area but close to so many places that are a must to see in the wonderful Lakes. I have looked back over many other reviews and it is very obvious that no one takes any notice what guest are telling you. Some of the issues i had other guest had back in 2016. The cottage is great for a base but you do need to address the fact it needs an update. The settee is very uncomfortable so much so i sat on the floor. You need to put the tiny TV back into the dolls house and get a decent size one. It was clean enough but i can see why other guest have complained. You really do need to put a mirror at the end of your drive it is not safe pulling out onto the road. The walled garden was a real treat, thank god i could use it as the whole week was completely ruined due to the fact the whole of the complex was hired out to a film company filming a Bollywood Film. I did not need an alarm clock as i was woken up at 6am every morning and again gone 11pm, I know the owner spoke to them but with around 30 people staying there there was no way it was going to be a good break. The smell from the chefs cooking was not good, filling the cottage all day, every day. There were black bags of food open in the yard and being enjoyed each day by the wildlife. I did get a part refund but still came home very stressed. You have one hell of a gem if you could only made the most of it. It was a bonus that the sun was out all week so i could go out as much as possible. Sykes sorry being told my only option was take the refund and go home was not really what i wanted to hear. This holiday was booked for a year. The film crew booked a few weeks.

Our 22nd holiday cottage since 2017, this one has a nice homely feel when entering, off road parking at the door is great to load and unload.

Home made biscuits, tea, coffee and milk and nice welcome pack touch. Immaculately clean and well presented with large smart tv, good Wi-Fi, stocked kitchen with plenty of all the essentials particularly if you wish to cook, vacuum, iron etc all provided Two bedrooms one with twin single beds and the main bedroom with wardrobe, drawers, TV and double bed…our first double as all previous ones have had king size or larger …..but still very comfortable Generous size bathroom with electric shower cubicle, towels provided Small paved enclosed outside area to the back ideal as other guests have commented to let the dogs out for a night time wee….but didn’t fancy the idea of sitting out with a glass of wine knowing it was a pittle and bin area Fabulous large park and playing fields immediately next door, gated and secure with plenty of bins. Ideally situated to access all the Lakes attractions and even east of M6 to visit the Yorkshire Dales Disappointingly the photo’s of the lounge show a lovely large and roomy 4 seat corner sofa and large coffee table so looks very inviting to sit and watch the large tv,,,,sadly they have been removed and replaced with a small painfully uncomfortable 2 seater sofa, a wooden kitchen style rocking chair and a 60’s Ercol type wooden slouch chair both of which have a comfort level lasting seconds …..what a shame that the cottage has been misrepresented by not updating the photo as the difference to what you expect compared to what you get are poles apart.

We had a lovely stay except for the last night when we did not get to sleep until past 4 am.

I think it would be worth informing future guests that the cottage is one small part of a larger development which is set up for large groups. The place was ideal for us & our very nervous rescue dog until the Friday. On the Friday groups of men began to arrive throughout the afternoon & evening until there were 25+. A huge amount of alcohol was piled up on a table in the quad outside our back window & some of the men began to drink on arrival. They used the large barn for their entertainment and were continually on the move between the big house & the barn all night. Being 2 women in this sort of situation was unsettling as we are aware a large number of men together with huge amounts of alcohol can be unpleasant. As it turned out the men did not bother us ( we had drawn all the curtains & locked the door) but we were on high alert all evening as the noise level & movement grew and it spoiled our last evening. I think it is important that guests are informed about issues like this before they book. Had we known that a large male only group was booked in we would not have stayed & it has certainly put us off going back there again. I hope you understand our issue with this. We did not feel safe & although the men were simply enjoying themselves we were on edge.

The property was beautiful, well thought out, very well equipped and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there.

The location was perfect and the secure garden for our dog was a real gem and one of the main draws to staying here. Unfortunately the bath was unusable our entire stay and although a lady who had been cleaning the cottage was there after 4pm when we arrived who told us she'd reported it to Lake Lovers who said they should be out the next day no one arrived. The same can be said for the main double bed which a leg had broken off and wasn't fixed whilst we were staying there. Fortunately there was a second double bed in the upper level which we were able to access but should other guests have perhaps had mobility issues etc navigating the spiral stairs may not have been so easy. All of that being said it's just bad luck when things break or go wrong and it wasn't the be all and end all of our stay and it wouldn't deter us from staying at this property again!

We loved our stay at Croft Cottage overall.

This is my third visit to the cottage and as usually I had a lovely time. The property is lovely and clean and the topper on the main bed really made a difference and was comfortable. The patio was lovely as we had some sunshine and was nice to sit out on with the dogs. The only downside was the footstools that were previously in the cottage have been removed and the two wooden chairs are to a very specific comfort. We could not get comfortable on the rocking chair or the other wooden chair so spent the week both of us huddled on the sofa with the footstool that we brought through from the bedroom. Might be worth considering putting another soft sofa or two soft chairs in the living room, like the one that is the main bedroom as it is much nicer having soft furnishings and something to put your feet up after a long days walking.
