What our customers say about their holidays

    • Vicky - Verified booking

The property was totally unsuitable for us.

There were several flies in every room and evidence in ceilings and walls where people had squashed them. Many spiders on ceiling and especially corners. When I booked I explained we must have ground floor accommodation as my husband can no longer manage the stairs. I was totally horrified to find steep stairs going up to kitchen and living room. As we arrived in the dark and later than we had intended there was nothing we could do about it that night. We phoned Sykes the following morning and they said they were unable to assist with finding us alternative accommodation but would get their customer service to contact us by phone. To date this has not happened. We were left by ourselves, stressed and worried where we would sleep that night. Once back home we are straight into a planned building project and extremely busy. The only communication Sykes have had with us is an email 27.9.23, 20 days after our 1 night stay from Customer Relations Team saying Francesca will respond to us. She has not called. Asking us to complete another questionnaire is their only contact with us We are left out of pocket for the 3 nights we could not stay in our accommodation and still stressed by the experience. We are extremely disappointed with Sykes and would not wish this situation on anybody else. I am hoping that by writing this report it will galvanise Sykes into contacting us direct and resolving this problem. Since 18th sept we have heard nothing other than the 1 email mentioned above . This place was great, right slap bang in the middle of keswick, so close to everything including a shop beneath us.

The location was mostly quiet except a few late night revellers but we didn’t mind. The overall cleanliness of the place was okay but things definitely needed a deep clean for example the cooker top and utilities as some surfaces felt quiet grimey. we loved the space and it had everything we needed such a as a washer etc and drying racks which was great, as after a long day hiking we needed to wash our clothes. there was also a couple tea bags and biscuits left for us which were comforting when we arrived. some feedback, not keen on the 9am check out especially when check in is at 4:00pm! i have been a cleaner and housekeeper and definitely think during a trip in which most days were out busy hiking that the check out should be at least 10 as a place should not need a 7 hour turn around. our relative was picking up our luggage and we were slightly late out but we couldn’t wait anywhere else with our luggage. overall it was a brilliant place to stay and sykes allowed us to pay off the accommodation when we wanted, however i do think that finding reviews for the place , and the listing of amenities needs updating. we were sent a list of things to bring and an oven glove was part of the list, however when we arrived there was one there? and also like a hair dryer and iron being included wasnt on the list, so we brought them with us which led us to carrying more stuff than we needed.

This was our first Christmas away from home, with family.

Which we had been really looking forward to. The main issue for us was, we had no hot water for a week’s stay. We used the contact provided several times to raise the issue. The guy who maintains the property came out once on the 23rd December, he was nice but not a plumber, he asked us to let him know if we continued with cold water, which we did, but unfortunately heard nothing back from him or the booking agent who we had been contacting directly! It is not much fun trying to boil water for warm washes for a family of 8! Or taking a cold shower. Half our party left after 4 days, we all left before the week had ended cutting the break short. As I said, we had gone to the property for Christmas so it was also disappointing to find no decorations or even a little Christmas tree. The property is spacious, does need an update without a doubt and the smaller living room is freezing. The kitchen is decently equipped and towels, bed linen are provided. There is only one small TV in the property, so if you are a family that enjoy games consoles or watching TV, that may be an issue. The views from the property are amazing and the local village Pooley bridge is lovely and dig friendly with lovely walks. I wouldn’t stay again, due to the issues and need for upgrade, if that was taken care of it would be a lovely place to stay.

The cottage was originally booked for the Spring but due to Covid restrictions we had to defer the trip until October.

However the cottage was lovely albeit on a muddy farm due to the weather. Heavy rain at night but apart from one day, lovely weather during the day so ideal for a holiday. It is also a working farm so bookers need to be aware of this. Don't expect to keep your car clean. The cottage had everything we needed and was very clean and tidy. It was also ideally located for us as it was near everything we wanted to visit. Ravensglass to Eskdale railway, Westwater, Conniston Water etc. Also took the train to Carlisle which is a great journey as the railway follows the coastline for much of the journey and only £18 return. There is a lot to do in Western Lakes and the cottage is an ideal location to see the area. The only criticism I have is with Sykes. Having originally booked for the Spring and having to move the booking to October due to Covid lockdown, we were never contacted re the price difference, which was about £100 cheaper. It would have been nice to have been asked if we were happy to continue to pay the extra £100 to the owners, which we were. We are retired and have not been financially affected by this disease, but understand many have been affected, so were happy to pay the extra. But it would have been nice to have been asked.

The location, and the actual house are fantastic.

That feeling of amazement and excitement that this was going to be our cottage was unbeatable when we first arrived. However, there were a few things that made it less 'shiny' of an experience. Firstly, there was no wi-fi for our stay - we were taken through to a page that said the wifi bill was not paid. We let Sykes know ASAP, and they told us they let the owner know and that hopefully they would pay for it before the end of our stay. Seeing as wifi was important to us (mixed working holiday and outdoors adventure) and was advertised, that was a bit annoying. Other facilities were also mildly difficult - for example, the lower oven door came right off its hinges. We had to put it back on. The plastic cap covering the joint between the shower hose and the wall came off, so I had to replace that. Something else we could have found useful was an itenerary of the kitchen items, because we ended up bringing a lot of our own items because we were unsure what the cottage held. Overall however, we loved our stay and the views from the house did not get old. The furnishings were lovely, the kitchen surprisingly well-equipped. The house was spacious, well-decorated, provided ample space, and was very charming.
