"I booked Winnie Cottage about 10 months in advance of our holiday and kept a keen eye on the reviews. I was a little concerned about a few of them and am happy to put a few things straight for other people who are thinking of booking the cottage. There is nothing at all wrong with Winnie Cottage. It is a delightful cottage in a lovely part of the world. The hot tub, sauna, waterbed and underfloor heating add the touches of luxury you appreciate on holiday. The cottage has Sky TV including full movie and sports packages. There are TVs in all the bedrooms and the kitchen (and by the hot tub). What you watch is controlled by the sky box, so all TVs will show the same programme, but you can watch DVDs independently. (One of the bedrooms has a blu-ray DVD player, so you have options)The outdoor space is very good. We sat outside on a cool summer evening and ate pizza by the patio heaters, which were very effective. The hot tub is excellent...roomy and with great jets and lights. the view from the hot tub is across fields. We enjoyed watching birds play and watching the two horses that live in the field below. On the final night, we saw bunnies in the field, too. The sauna is great; our typical evening was; cocktail in hot tub, sauna, shower, bottle of wine with a movie....great holiday routine! The waterbed was really comfortable. The whole cottage is designed for you to relax and unwind and this is exactly what we did. There are great places to visit near the cottage. We walked down to The BlueBell a couple fo times and enjoyed the food and atmosphere this little pub offers. We took the train from Prudhoe to Newcastle or The Metro centre a few times; the station at Prudhoe has free parking or you can book taxis easily enough to take you down and back again (It cost us around £4.50 for a taxi to Prudhoe). Northumberland has loads to offer from fantastic National Trust places (esp Cragside and Lindisfarne) to great beaches (esp Druridge Bay). Beamish is a 30 min drive from the cottage and well worth a visit. So...a great cottage in a great place. So why the previous negative reviews? I will be really honest here as I know that some people reading this, like us, do not have money to throw away and the holiday you book will be the only one you take all year and you want to get it right. There really is NOTHING wrong with Winnie Cottage and you can book with confidence. The owner was at the end of a phone the whole holiday and was very helpful in fixing any little problems that arose (in our case it was a broken DVD player...fixed straight away) However, this is not a cottage for everyone and you need to make the right decision. If you are looking for a cosy place with a great kitchen for cooking and a sweet lady owner who cooks a homemade cake on arrival for you, this is not the place for you...Mark's idea of a welcome pack was wine (which suited us fine!!!). If you want cups of tea in an armchair with the whole family around an inglenook fireplace, there are probably better places for you out there, if you want to serve up culinary delights to you family every night you will probably get fed up carrying everything up the stairs from the kitchen, if you have young children who are not confident on stairs you will probably struggle here as there is a lovely spiral staircase going down to the kitchen, if you want that antiseptic clean feel of a 5 star hotel, you may want to book a modern hotel rather than a cottage (the place was clean, do not worry about previous reviews. I gave an 8 rather than a 10 as my daughter found rubbish under the bed on our final day when she was packing...the cleaner had obviously not moved the furniture to clean under it, but I know Mark would have been straight on to it if we had spotted it earlier, the kitchens, bathrooms and dining room were beautifully clean) ....but you could write a list like this for any cottage. The fact is that no cottage suits everyone. We like old fashioned and characterful, we like peace and quiet with the option of going out into the world to do tourist things, we love beautiful scenery, we like to walk to a pub, we like little luxuries like a hot tub and sauna, we like free wi-fi, we like entertainment options for teenagers, we like to feel a bit spoilt, we like to be warm, we like to relax. If you fit that brief, you will love Winnie Cottage and can happily ignore the couple of negative reviews...they do not apply to you; I think they must have been written by people who, unfortunately, chose a beautiful cottage that just did not suit their needs. Look at the pictures, read the description and, if you think this is the place for you, book with confidence...we have just returned from a great 2 week holiday here and, for people like us, happily recommend it!"

"Arrived after a 7 hr journey to a property that had NOT been cleaned. Calls to the Caretaker/owner were not answered. Spoke to the Agent and sent photos to them who advised we should clean the kitchen ourselves. (!) Cleaning products had to be then purchased ( none available at all in the property at all) , a further 23 mile round trip to find a Tescos. The fridge had mould all around the seal, out of date butter dated December 2016 was in there, plus other food debris, the freezer smelt disgusting and uncleaned, dishwasher - you don't want to know, cutlery put back unwashed etc etc. After spending 2 hrs cleaning just the kitchen and then grabbing a sandwich for dinner we went up stairs to find that the bed sheets had not been changed either. Still unable to speak with owner we slept in clothes with our coats over us. Next morning we spoke again to the agent who had still not been able to get hold of any one. We told them of the additional cleaning issues far too many to list here but basically nothing had been cleaned everything felt dirty, sticky, stuff had been spilt in drawers, bath not cleaned etc. The agent said we had to allow the owner the opportunity to put things right. We sat in all day waiting. Nothing. The Agent then tried to relocate us which they were unable to do. At 5.30 pm we received a call from the owner saying he had missed calls from our number. He had not listened to any messages from us or the Agent. His uncaring attitude and rudeness to us beggared absolute belief. Even though it was another 7 + hr journey home we decided to just go. In praise for the Agent though they have reacted extremely well for us and the full cost of our rental plus compensation has been received. The worst cottage we have ever rented in 30 plus years!!"

"We stayed here for 5 days back in January. Problems we had were the bath upstairs couldn't be used for the entire stay after it would not drain, this was reported immediately but couldn't be fixed during our stay. Also the TV outside wasn't working, to be fair it was fixed but on our last day. Again this was reported immediately. When we checked out on our last day I sent a text to the owner Mark apologising that we couldn't fill the hot tub as the outside tap and hose were frozen. I received a text back acknowledging this but also accusing us of turning off the hot tub and stating it wouldn't be ready for the next people to arrive. I can assure the people who were arriving on the 27th January that we did not turn off the hot tub. We were impressed with certain aspects of Winnie cottage, its tastefully decorated and is in a very good location, the stairs leading down to the kitchen were not a problem for us. The under floor heating and log burner made for very cosy evenings. Our dog was very happy with the outside areas and it's very enclosed so we never worried about letting him out. To summarise it's a lovely cottage but the issues of the upstairs bath, outside TV and the attitude of the owner on our last day mean we would certainly not choose Winne cottage again."

"Fabulously located and fabulously wonderful. Really comfortable and would easily sleep 6, with plenty of seating areas and dining space. Often cottages say they sleep 6 but only really suit 4, not Willow Cottage. This is the second year we have been and we will definitely be back. Location is excellent for all things from walking Hadrians Wall to the bright lights of Newcastle. The Miners Arms, just a short walk from the cottage, is a lovely place with roaring log fires and really friendly staff/customers. The cottage itself is really well equipped and we weren’t short of anything at all (and we did a fair bit of cooking). Excellent quality toiletries in the bathrooms, and lots of lovely fluffy towels. We had some friends who live locally come and visit us while we were there and they were amazed by the "tardisness" of the cottage! Pleasant and unassuming from the outside, it unfolds into a huge house. The garden is really nice too - good and dog-proof (or child-proof) and lots of space for running around (if you or your dog/child so desire!). Plenty of space for lounging around with a nice glass of wine too! All-in-all we cannot praise this cottage highly enough - well done to all involved. Oct 2012."

"The Claret jug was very good, good food & serviceThe lodge lovelyHotel and lodge staff wonderfulFacilities great Kids had a wonderful time Over all a cracking stayWe would love to stay again however :One area which needs serious attention !!!The main restaurant was appalling Very understaffed No service what so ever, not even the basics.they pointed to the table that we had been allocated no one showed us to the table. We weren't asked if we would like a drink until we asked,we had to ask for menus, our drinks came after we finished our starters. The table next to us got there drinks after they finished there main courses, food was very average ( wedding food ) The bill was wrong, we questioned what the wrong items where but all the items were for items on previous menus, so we paid anyway as they couldn't itemise it all. The staff were laughing between themselves when we left. No one even said thanks or goodbye !!!No Management in sight !!!Will never visit the restaurant again !!!Such a shame that this one area let the rest downWonderful stay, as above we would love to return but we will give Hadrian's a miss next time"
