What our customers say about their holidays

    • Joe - Verified booking

Although there was nothing wrong with the cottage/dairy itself, in fact on the whole it was quite nice, there were a couple of disappointments to deal with when we arrived.

Apparently, there had been vehicle damage to a telegraph pole and there was no Internet. Obviously this was outside the control of the owner, but knowing about it would have been nice as I had taken some work with us that I couldn't do. This was coupled with problem that we couldn't get any type of Internet connection via 4g, or even slower, while in the area of the cottage. We couldn't even get a telephone signal of any kind. No Internet, so no WhatsApp, no telephone signal, so not even texts. I am with O2 and my wife is with Vodafone. I don't know if that is the usual situation or the problem is related to the issue with the telegraph pole. We were asked to move our new car from the front of the property to the side, because it was in view of the guests from the other holiday property (their car was at the side of their property). We did this but I was a bit concerned about all the conkers that fallen all over that area. However it wasn't windy so that wasn't a problem. When we came back one evening the new guests from the other property were parked where we'd been told to park, so we had to park at the front anyway. Also, again no fault of the owner, but the A35 was closed for repairs each night between 8.00pm and 6.00am, so getting back after 8.00 was via single track country lanes, but there are passing places. On the plus side the property has pretty well everything you are likely to need and it's handy for anywhere accessible from the Dorchester to Honiton road. There are some nice eateries a short drive away, particularly The Loders Arms. The food is good and the service too, but don't go if you have a problem with dogs, although all very friendly, there's a lot of them. It's our 6th visit to Dorset and apart from the aforementioned inconveniences, we had a good holiday and we will, God willing, be returning to Dorset next year.

The flat had not been cleaned properly.

The bathmat was used, smelled damp and had a brown deposit on it. This was replaced on Monday. The teaspoons were badly stained. The Mugs were tea stained. The coasters were heavily ring marked and sticky . Glasses in the Bathroom were white with scale or toothpaste .Food debris between seats of sofa along with white marks and sticky patches. Dirty mop in coats cupboard which we could smell even when doors shut!! If this had been used to clean hard floors they would not have been very clean. The washing up bowl was stained. Kitchen cupboard doors grubby. Bathroom cupboard needed cleaning. I spoke with Sykes on Sunday. Couldn't get through on Saturday. Helpful and apologetic. Offered to have flat cleaned but we didn't want the disruption. We washed kitchen stuff before use. We were advised of works taking place on the beach at West Bay buy could never have imagined the dust, noise and disruption this entailed. We were often woken by stone deliveries with three or four large pieces of machinery then moving the stone. This at five am. So not a particularly relaxing holiday. We have stayed in Sykes properties before with no problems. We understand that cleaning is now done by a contractor.

      We arrived at 3.

30 pm and let ourselves in and the place had not been cleaned ,dirty bed linen on floor in bedroom ,dirty towels on floor . we phoned sykes and was told that the cleaner was on her rounds and would be here shortly.Anyway 5.00 oclock came and no cleaner ,we phoned again and was told that they would ring us back.At 5.10 we had a phone call saying the cleaner was on her way,5.25 the cleaner turned up and said that she was not told there was any one in this apartment this week and asked if we were a late booking we said no and that we had booked last year .She said she will get done what she could while here ,to which my wife said the balcony as not been cleaned for a couple of weeks and patio doors needed cleaning inside and out ,the cleaners reply was i do not do outside windows which is a surprise as it is a part of the bedroom. We got into the apartment at 6.30 and feel that what we paid for and got was not acceptable ,how long was the dirty washing on the floor in the apartment for, hygiene was definitely not on the list.we cleaned the apartment thoroughly on friday including patio doors . were was the covid-19 guide lines.

The marketing images of the property do not demonstrate the poor wear and tear or cleanliness of the property.

When we arrived to the property on the outset it looked lovely however this soon changed upon entering the property. Whilst the property hadn’t been cleaned, the dirt and grime wasn’t just from one missed cleaning this had been built up over time from a lack of thorough cleaning. The internal walls, roller blinds, picture frames, windows, shower, outside table and chairs were filthy dirty with stains, dust, dirt cobwebs or dirty hand marks. The internal doors were pealing and some had chunks missing, curtain in living room had holes, sofa cushions and sofa had food stains, kitchen cupboards were worn and starting to peal at the bottom the outdoor furniture was dirty, rusty and covered in bird poo. Thankfully, I had taken my own cleaning stuff, blankets to cover the sofas, pillow cases etc. We also had wonderful weather so we spent most of our time at the beach. Since returning home I raised the issue with the owner who apologised and assured me that she would put things right, so hopefully future customers don’t have same experience.

The property has super potential and is in a great location for visiting the local area and all it has to offer.

The standard of the equipment provided left a little bit to be desired. No colander in the kitchen, and an airer of some description would have been handy. Our main issue however was with the cleanliness of the property. On arrival we noticed that the bedding in the double bed was filthy, with dirt all over the duvet cover. To their credit, the staff and cleaning team went out of their way to deal with this, but this just shouldn’t happen. As the week went on it became clearer and clearer that the property had just not been cleaned thoroughly either between stays or in terms of longer term cleanliness and house keeping. The standard was just not acceptable. When you are paying the kind of money that Sykes charge, and the mark up for ‘management’ of the booking is getting higher and higher, and given that check out times are earlier and check in times continue to be much later in the day than pre covid, there really is no excuse for a poor standard of cleanliness. Must try harder !
