Get away from it all with our Northumberland Holiday Cottages

Northumberland is England's northernmost county up by the Scottish Borders and is a must-visit holiday destination for fun, adventure, history, and outstanding natural beauty.

Book one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and you'll find yourself in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the countryside is wild and rugged and the heritage coastline is studded with beautiful hidden coves and sandy beaches.

With hundreds of beautiful Northumberland self-catering properties, Snaptrip is your one-stop shop to find the holiday home of your dreams. Whether you're travelling with friends, family, or your special someone, take a look through our wide selection of countryside and beachside cottages and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Why choose a Northumberland weekend break or staycation?

The county of Northumberland is one of the most sparsely populated locations in the UK, making it the ideal place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Over a quarter of the county is made up of the Northumberland National Park, so if you're looking for a proper escape from the stresses of everyday life, you couldn't find a more perfect destination. From wide sandy beaches, pretty moorlands dotted with heather, roaring waterfalls, rolling hillsides, and ancient woodlands, there is plenty to explore.

The beaches in Northumberland are clean and pristine. Imagine white sand, glorious blue skies, and even bluer waters. Bamburgh Beach has got to be one of our favourites. Bamburgh is an idyllic coastal village with everything you could want from a small seaside town. The beach is exquisite for relaxing and playing, and the village is lovely for walking around. There's also the impressive Bamburgh Castle to explore if you fancy a break from the beach.

To experience the whole of Northumberland's epic coastline, join the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route is a whopping 62 miles long, and while it can take up to seven days to complete, it's well worth the amble. You'll see the beautiful coast, incredible beaches, and sweet fishing villages.

Northumberland is a historic county littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed with their imposing fortresses, castles and monasteries.

There are more castles here than in any other county, 39 to be exact, and each one has its own character. These castles go back to the Norman times, built to defend the region from invaders. Some favourites include the majestic Alnwick (famed as the filming location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh castles, the haunting ruins of Warkworth, and the isolated Dunstanburgh Castle.

Speaking of history, Northumberland is the home of Hadrian's Walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most famous frontier of the Roman Empire. The walls span 73 miles from coast to coast but are the most intact in Northumberland. The wall weaves up and down hills, and a walk along it offers the chance to see the remains of towers, turrets, and forts.

If you want to do something truly memorable, make sure you go stargazing during your visit. The incredibly low levels of light pollution make Northumberland an amazing place to see the stars in all their glory, especially if you stay in the designated dark sky area around Kielder. It's even possible to spot the Milky Way and identify planets from the observatory.

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a trip to Holy Island. This four-square-mile island can only be accessed at low tide. While you're there, visit the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle, perched high up on a volcanic rock. The island also has a small harbour, a nature reserve, a pretty village, and priory ruins.

We've only scratched the surface of things to do in this incredible county. To experience all there is to discover, stay in one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and plan an epic adventure.

Hundreds of Northumberland holiday rentals to suit everyone

Whether you're looking for a countryside or coastal Northumberland holiday cottage, we've got the perfect accommodation for you. Enjoy excellent facilities such as free WiFi, private driveways, enclosed gardens, fully-equipped kitchens, and extra special touches such as hot tubs and games rooms. Many of our cottages are also dog-friendly, so even your furry friend can come along and join in the fun.

If you're looking for a base to explore the stunning Northumbrian coast and countryside, start browsing our hand-picked selection today and let's plan the holiday of your dreams.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Confirmed Guest - Verified booking

Lost Lobster Cottage is absolutely gorgeous, I especially loved all of the lobster themed decorations and mugs! I have historically looked for properties in the Warkworth area but wanted to find a new location for exploring a different part of the coast. Lost Lobster has all the character and charm of what I have come to love about booking with Coquet Cottages. It really is such a lovely cottage, so warm and well equipped. It felt like a family home rather than a holiday home. The kitchen is amazing, even down to the recipe books. The shower and bath are just such a luxury and I made the most of a good deep bath to soothe my tired legs after long beach walks. The beds are super comfortable and it was so nice to sleep in bedding like the ones I have at home. The front and back porches made it so easy make sure our dogs were clean and not bringing sand and muck into the rest of house. Coquet Cottages will always be my go to company for my trips to Northumberland because the standard and attention to detail of all your cottages is beyond brilliant.

We stayed here for a week from 28th February. Lost Lobster is a great find, the best of many cottages we have visited in Northumberland. Everything we could possibly need was provided and the property was immaculately clean. Fixtures, fittings and utensils are high quality and the cottage is so comfortable. Two lovely warm bedrooms, one twin and one king size. The lounge is large and comfortable with two gorgeous sofas, log burner and a smart tv. The kitchen, also good sized, had all we needed. The garden is a good size and fully enclosed. Perfect. This cottage felt more like a home than a holiday cottage. It’s location in Embleton is a few minutes walk from two pubs and a small shop for basic provisions. Our favourite pub in the area is The Ship Inn in Low Newton, five minutes drive or half an hours walk over the dunes or along the beach for the best crab sandwiches in the world … in our opinion. All in all a fabulous cottage, if we could give it more than five stars we would! A credit to its owner and housekeeper. We will return

We have had nothing but compliments on our fabulous first time stay in Northumberland. The cottage is without doubt one of the most cosy, stylish and well thought out we have ever stayed in. All the little touches and details really do get noticed and make you feel at home. We loved the scones and doggie hamper. All the quirky Lost Lobster references too! Beds were outstandingly comfortable and the log burner a winner. We loved Embleton and the beach here. Perfect position to explore Northumberland. Had a great meal at The Greys Inn & The Jolly Fisherman and enjoyed a memorable day out to Lindisfarne and Bamburgh. Amble is definitely worth a trip too and we will be visiting Alnwick and Druridge Bay on our way home today. One of the highlights of our week was braving the alarm clock and heading down to Embleton beach for sunrise by the castle. Truly spectacular and would recommend highly. Thanks again for a wonderful stay. PS It was great not to have to bring bottles of shampoo and shaver gel etc.
