    Self-catering holidays in Dorset

There are many words you can use to describe the majesty of Dorset - scenic, picturesque, utterly beautiful. When thinking of Dorset's rolling hills, craggy cliffs and secret coastline swimming pools, one word springs to mind, and that's 'unspoilt'.

Dorset is how the English countryside is meant to look. Its days are filled with sunshine, dancing across the top of cobblestones. Its nights are made of the clearest skies, fresh air and the sound of nocturnal birds. Dorset is a family holiday destination in a picture postcard image of England and a place you can never visit just once.

We want your holidays in Dorset to be as perfect as possible. Whether it's for a short break or a month-long getaway, whatever type of holiday home you're craving, we'll do our best to make it happen. Our selection of cottages in Dorset offers a range of options to suit your needs, from cosy one-bedroom cottages to spacious properties that can accommodate larger groups. Whether you're looking to explore the county's rich cultural heritage, with its historic sites and museums, have a laugh at a comedy club, or simply relax on one of its many beaches, our cottages provide the perfect base for your stay.

What our customers say about their holidays

Rycross Farm Cottage is a tranquil and relaxing location for a break.

The owners are very friendly and helpful and are nearby, but not intrusive. I arrived at dusk, and a welcoming light had been left on which made me smile. The cottage is bright and warm and the kitchen, although small, is very well equipped. Beds are comfy and broadband reliable. The views across the countryside are spectacular and I saw birds of prey and a couple of deer in the garden. There is also outside seating for visits with better weather. If the peace and quiet gets too much, the historic and busting town of Shaftesbury with its independent shops and Thursday market is only a few moments drive away. There is also a Tesco and a soon to be opened Lidl in town. For those coming from the south, if you find your way to the A350 from Blandford Forum and head north, you will reach a place called Cann. Pass straight through and as you get to the point where the 30mph returns to 40mph, indicate left and take that first turn which is almost on top of the speed limit sign. Rycross Farm isn't signposted from this direction and, if you miss the turn , it's probably safest to carry on to the first Shaftesbury roundabout and come back. This was my first post-pandemic cottage holiday and, if anyone is concerned about doing the same, you can choose this venue with confidence. It is clean and obviously loved. You can be as isolated or as gregarious as you choose. I can't wait to go back.

The location is lovely & the facilities were just what we required.

The Owner was a very nice Lady and very prompt to attend to problem of why Hob not working when I was right in middle of preparing food for our 53rd anniversary meal with friends due(instruction folder had been put in tv drawer across room instead of located near the Hob) Previous Occupier had set the childlock and we are not savvy with induction hobs! Unfortunately as we were putting food away in the fridge the brackets supporting the glass shelves started to crack up as have gone brittle and there was a near miss episode with the glass shelf collapsing on to the floor which could have been dangerous as I am disabled with serious leg disability. Fortunately the shelf didn't shatter. The shelves need replacing although the fridge/freezer worked well! My Husband thought it would also be helpful if each of the many fused switched Spurs were labelled so as to identify Hob&Oven etc Also he says it works have been helpful to have an Covered outdoor 13 amp power supply for our Hybrid PHEV car, as we do not use the type of charge facilities in the carpark. We enjoyed our stay though very much and thank the Owners for helping to make our 53rd Anni a happy occasion. The weather was good so we could get out & about this beautiful part of Dorset and enjoy using our NT membership

Though we enjoyed our stay there, it really would have been nice to be able to have our grandsons and son stay over night.

When I booked it, I had not noticed “can not bring Guests back for overnight stays. Nor was it clearly indicated on the site that “No Children” were allowed. Though We understood the reasoning from the Martins, it was disappointing. However we made do, and had a great stay. The Cottage is convenient to the area we were visiting. It had two bedrooms, clean and comfortable and good parking. We love seeing the deer in the field, a variety of birds and even a rabbit visited. Another amenity of a Washer/Dryer would have been very helpful as well; especially, since it was a rainy week and we were visiting from the US. Mr and Mrs Martin were both very nice and chatted with us when we saw them. The cottage was welcoming and Mrs Martin had left us some cookies (biscuits) along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

      Barn facilities very good.

A secluded location and great if you want some peace and quiet-although that wasn’t always possible It’s a hard water area and the kettle needed descaling but I messaged the management and within a short time they popped around with the kettle descaler, which I think is good. Loved the games room. Everything was really well maintained, beautiful linen and quality feel to the rooms. Would have liked a bath sheet towel provided as well otherwise we would have brought our own - small face and body towel ok if you’re a size 10! I felt the double bed mattress was too hard and had backache- but I think that’s often down to personal preference and difficult to provide for all choices and preferences. Overall this was a beautiful barn and dog friendly with a great gated area for our pooch.

The location of the holiday cottage was a few miles outside of Blandford Forum as indicated on Sykes Cottages.

This gave us a better opportunity to explore different areas with the dogs and we found some fantastic walking opportunities with stunning views. New Barns was comfortable and everything we had expected, if not more. The enclosed areas to each house enabled you to have your own space, allow the friendly dogs to join in with the family sat outside (picnic bench) but also the opportunity to meet and talk to others staying on the complex. We will definitely be booking New Barns for our next trips to Dorset. The only negative I would like to point out is the arrival (3p.m) and departure (10a.m) times of the property, understandably the cottages need to be cleaned and checked for the next tenants but I feel that this could be improved or adapted for guests.

The town of Dorchester is often considered the best base for exploring Dorset. From there, you can easily visit the Jurassic Coast, including popular spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, as well as historical sites such as Maiden Castle and Thomas Hardy's Cottage. While having a car can be beneficial for exploring the wider areas of Dorset, it is not always necessary, especially if you plan to stay in more central locations or focus on specific attractions.
