Get away from it all with our Whitby holiday cottages

Looking out over the wild North Sea, the historic seaside town of Whitby is the perfect place for a cottage getaway. Offering idyllic natural beauty, unique historical sites and classic seaside charm, it is no wonder that visitors have been flocking to this gem of a holiday destination for centuries.

Whether you choose to spend your holiday scouring the boutique shops that line the cobbled streets in the centre of Whitby or prefer to head out to the moors in search of rare wildlife, you're guaranteed to be surprised by what you find here.

Given its coastal location, Whitby is also the perfect spot to enjoy water sports, a relaxing day at the beach or some traditional fun and games along the Victorian pavilion.

If you're looking to book a short break to recharge your batteries or want to make the most of everything on offer over a couple of weeks, our selection of beautiful Whitby holiday cottages is just what you need to complete your trip.

Why choose a Whitby weekend break or staycation?

Whitby in beautiful North Yorkshire is a treat to visit any time of year.

It's one of the most popular destinations on the Yorkshire Coast, and the historic seaside town has something for everyone.

The town is most famous for its connection to the legendary Count Dracula. In the classic vampire novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula arrives in England on a ship, which washes up on the Yorkshire Coast. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by Whitby Abbey and the atmospheric cemetery in the churchyard at St Mary's Church.

Feeling energetic? Climb the 199 steps through cobbled stones and up a cliff to see the incredible Whitby Abbey for yourself. These steps were famously featured in Dracula, and the views you'll be treated to at the top are well worth the effort. The grounds are dog-friendly, and you can spend a happy few hours enjoying a picnic, wandering through the haunting abbey remains, and taking in the spectacular view.

Exploring the town of Whitby is an utter delight. The cobbled streets make you feel like you've stepped back in time, and there are plenty of lovely shops, cafes, and restaurants to pop into. The streets and alleys are charming and narrow, with lots of hidden treasures buried in antique shops to discover.

Planning on visiting Whitby around Christmas? You'll be treated to twinkling lights and gorgeous decorations in all the shop windows, making the whole town feel like Santa's grotto.

If you're looking for a more traditional seaside holiday, Whitby delivers on every level.

The Victorian-era Whitby pavilion always has something great going on, including theatre, festivals and art events. And, of course, you'll find all the trappings of a quintessential British seaside town, from charming little boutiques and gift shops to amusement arcades and tea rooms, not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the country. Make sure you bring your appetite!

There's also the beautiful Whitby Harbour to add to your list, with its charming harbourside cottages surrounding the water. This harbour was once famous for its success in the whaling industry, but today, you can join a boat trip and have a scenic tour into Whitby Bay.

While you're there, why not try your hand at a spot of crabbing? Trying to catch crabs has been a favourite pastime for years, and the best place to catch one is next to the swing bridge that separates the harbour from the old town.

Whitby is also famous for being the home of James Cook, also known as Captain Cook, the man who charted the coast of New Zealand and Australia. Captain Cook is renowned as being one of the most accomplished explorers of all time, and you can learn more about him at the Captain Cook Museum.

We've only scratched the surface of the many things to do in this beautiful Yorkshire coastal town. To discover more, stay in one of our beautiful Whitby self-catering properties and enjoy a well-earned break in one of our favourite UK holiday spots.

Discover hundreds of beautiful Whitby holiday rentals

So whether you want to stay in the heart of the action, enjoy sea views, or wake up every morning with nothing but nature around you, we've got you covered. Choose a rustic cottage with character features and a roaring wood fireplace, or why not stay in an old guardhouse with plenty of room for the whole family, a fairytale cottage down a narrow alley, or a luxury modern townhouse?

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lesley - Verified booking

This was our first time staying at Blink Bonney Cottage.

It was lovely the views are absolutely beautiful. Especially from the bedroom watching the lovely pink sky's and odd nights went to bed early just to listen to the birds singing. The beds were very comfy and everything was there we could need. We enjoyed the Guess Who game it was funny. Sitting outside in the sun in the back was lovely then we sat also on the front. We also took the 11.21 train midweek from Glaisdale Station 3 times to whitby and return, if you time it right when you arrive in Whitby you can catch the X94 bus, onto Robin Hoods bay and return to catch the 15.59 train back to Glaisdale. The northern line is called the pretty line, it was beautiful. Our daughter loved it. We also enjoyed visiting Lealholm the next village, another pretty place and did the stepping stones. We filled up with fuel too there, very handy prior to our journey home, and visited the village store which has everything and also the most gorgeous garden centre and local pub. We had a wonderful stay thank you. Sadly our holiday ended on the last night with sad news of my Dad passing away and I think I was meant to be there when I found out, I went and sat by the stream on our last morning and a blackbird visited, it hopped right up to me and stayed for quite some time, maybe it was my dad visiting me one last time, that's what I'd like to think.

The Counting House has everything needed for a short or long stay Not just a washer but a washer dryer and two tvs.

Very good location.. close to everywhere in whitby but not noisy. The bed is reasonably sized and comfortable The shower is as on the pic and a tall person may struggle but the pic clearly shows this The parking is as described : only pointer would be to make the sharp drop at the back of the parking spot a lot clearer. (There is a curved ridge before the drop) and maybe add a barrier for safety as it’s not clear on a first stay but lovely to have your own dedicated stop at the property… access to the spot is clearly described Of note the bedroom t v works fine: to turn on and off you have to press and hold the controller right next to the red light on the t v, otherwise it’s fine. If any tv pixellates check if the plug and aerial are properly inserted For the price location and amenities provided it’s an excellent property for two people…. 5 stars from us xxxxx The Granby hotel on skinner street is excellent for pub grub: home made and nothing more than £ 12.95 as of July 2024 We found abbey wharf ok but not as good as hyped with stodgy chips and watery mushy peas Sadly we never got round to my personal fav at Moutreys Italian. And the butchers that never seems to get a mention on media on golden lion bank is excellent.. breckons butchers We hope to stay here again the future.

Had a wonderful week away from it all this November in Blinkbonny.

The cottage is wonderfully situated in the lovely village of Glaisdale, just up the road from the local pub and the train station. The cottage has everything you could need and is very cosy. The owners Jonathan and Rachel leave a welcome pack, of milk, local cake, Rachel's home made marmalade and a Whitby Gazette and are very helpful. There are also provisions in the cottage to use if you want to use them such as tea bags, coffee and all the essential cooking equipment etc. The stairs are quite steep but that wasn't a problem for us and to be expected in character properties. It was so quiet and peaceful and the views were stunning. There are many walks in the area with the added bonus that a lot of the local villages have a train station if you didn't fancy walking home. Whitby is at the end of the line too, so twice we caught the train there and back. I would highly recommend stopping in Blinkbonny.

As mentioned above, this was a great property in a fantastic location with easy access to everything in Whitby. The town has plenty of character and was great with lots of bars & restaurants and plenty of shops, plus the abbey for those who want some history. There were only 2 of us staying so we closed off the hatch to the twin room on the ground floor so didn't ever use the front door. Everything in the cottage was what you need for a cottage stay away from home, well equipped kitchen & bathroom, comfy lounge with views over the harbour, and a master bedroom on the top floor. There is a bit of a dogy step in the bedroom, but the owner has put a sensor light by it so if you get up in the middle of the night it won't catch you out. Would 100% recommend Willow Cottage to a friend.

The house, Blinkbonny, was exactly what we hoped it would be like.

The information was totally accurate and the finishings and fabric were of quality. The equipment in the house all worked and the variety of implements meant that it was a real home from home. It was an excellent situation for the day trips we wanted to undertake. Staithes, Runswick Bay, Sandsend, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar NT Coastal Centre, Scarborough were all within reach. Lealholm well worth a visit for Stepping Stones, Garden Centre and Tea Shop. Falling Foss and May Beck circular walk impressive. Being able to play games after making evening meals was such a bonus. Thank you to Rachel and Jonathan for attending to the fine details.

    Frequent questions

    • Is it easy to walk around Whitby?

Whitby is a small, charming town on the east coast of England that is easily navigable on foot. Its compact town centre and pedestrian-friendly streets make it convenient to explore the main attraction. While the hilly terrain and potential crowds during peak seasons should be considered, walking remains a delightful way to experience the beauty and ambiance of Whitby.

Yes, Whitby is definitely worth visiting. This picturesque town offers a unique blend of history, stunning natural beauty, and a charming atmosphere. From the iconic Whitby Abbey and historic harbour to the beautiful coastline and quaint streets, there is plenty to see and explore. Whether you're interested in history, scenic walks, or simply enjoying the local seafood, Whitby has something to offer for visitors of all interests.
