Get away from it all with our Whitby holiday cottages

Looking out over the wild North Sea, the historic seaside town of Whitby is the perfect place for a cottage getaway. Offering idyllic natural beauty, unique historical sites and classic seaside charm, it is no wonder that visitors have been flocking to this gem of a holiday destination for centuries.

Whether you choose to spend your holiday scouring the boutique shops that line the cobbled streets in the centre of Whitby or prefer to head out to the moors in search of rare wildlife, you're guaranteed to be surprised by what you find here.

Given its coastal location, Whitby is also the perfect spot to enjoy water sports, a relaxing day at the beach or some traditional fun and games along the Victorian pavilion.

If you're looking to book a short break to recharge your batteries or want to make the most of everything on offer over a couple of weeks, our selection of beautiful Whitby holiday cottages is just what you need to complete your trip.

Why choose a Whitby weekend break or staycation?

Whitby in beautiful North Yorkshire is a treat to visit any time of year.

It's one of the most popular destinations on the Yorkshire Coast, and the historic seaside town has something for everyone.

The town is most famous for its connection to the legendary Count Dracula. In the classic vampire novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula arrives in England on a ship, which washes up on the Yorkshire Coast. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by Whitby Abbey and the atmospheric cemetery in the churchyard at St Mary's Church.

Feeling energetic? Climb the 199 steps through cobbled stones and up a cliff to see the incredible Whitby Abbey for yourself. These steps were famously featured in Dracula, and the views you'll be treated to at the top are well worth the effort. The grounds are dog-friendly, and you can spend a happy few hours enjoying a picnic, wandering through the haunting abbey remains, and taking in the spectacular view.

Exploring the town of Whitby is an utter delight. The cobbled streets make you feel like you've stepped back in time, and there are plenty of lovely shops, cafes, and restaurants to pop into. The streets and alleys are charming and narrow, with lots of hidden treasures buried in antique shops to discover.

Planning on visiting Whitby around Christmas? You'll be treated to twinkling lights and gorgeous decorations in all the shop windows, making the whole town feel like Santa's grotto.

If you're looking for a more traditional seaside holiday, Whitby delivers on every level.

The Victorian-era Whitby pavilion always has something great going on, including theatre, festivals and art events. And, of course, you'll find all the trappings of a quintessential British seaside town, from charming little boutiques and gift shops to amusement arcades and tea rooms, not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the country. Make sure you bring your appetite!

There's also the beautiful Whitby Harbour to add to your list, with its charming harbourside cottages surrounding the water. This harbour was once famous for its success in the whaling industry, but today, you can join a boat trip and have a scenic tour into Whitby Bay.

While you're there, why not try your hand at a spot of crabbing? Trying to catch crabs has been a favourite pastime for years, and the best place to catch one is next to the swing bridge that separates the harbour from the old town.

Whitby is also famous for being the home of James Cook, also known as Captain Cook, the man who charted the coast of New Zealand and Australia. Captain Cook is renowned as being one of the most accomplished explorers of all time, and you can learn more about him at the Captain Cook Museum.

We've only scratched the surface of the many things to do in this beautiful Yorkshire coastal town. To discover more, stay in one of our beautiful Whitby self-catering properties and enjoy a well-earned break in one of our favourite UK holiday spots.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Renee - Verified booking

      Wayside is an incredible property.

From the outside it looks small but inside it’s extremely roomy with three large double bedrooms (one has twin beds but could easily fit another couple of beds as it’s so big). Unlike some holiday cottages, this feels like a home from home with beautiful furnishings in the large living room making it so cosy. The kitchen is well equipped meaning you don’t need to take anything with you - nothing has been overlooked by an obviously very thoughtful owner. I’ve left the best until last - the views!! Spectacular views from every window in the house and garden, which backs onto a large field of free range chickens (we bought a dozen of their eggs and they were so tasty. There is a pub serving good food a few steps away and a railway station 2 minutes walk away that takes you to Whitby via some of the local villages. I cannot recommend this property enough. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us.

The cottage was very nice and very clean but if I had to put it down in any way then it would have to be the bathroom only because it has a bath tub but the shower couldn’t be connected to the wall above so having to sit in the bath and then have a wash because the bath was not long enough to lay down but in the short stay we had then it was ok, The double bed was ok and beding was fine, Also maybe a few more teaspoons , but on the whole it was a good cottage and in the centre of all the places I did visit also the front door pvc has dropped a little bit and needs adjusting but as I said it was a lovely cottage, Many thanks Colin Jenkins Who stayed august 25 th to 30th i other thing is that it’s a bit early to have to leave the cottage at 9am and should be around noon

We had a lovely three-night stay.

The cottage is bursting with original character of its age; slightly wonky stairs, the old stove in the bedroom and tiny windows looking out on the square. It takes you back in time somewhat. The central location was really great, we based our days from the house and walked everywhere from there. The bed was really comfortable and we slept very well indeed! Parking was a mild inconvenience being a 1/2 mile walk away, and I had to do a few loops to find a suitable spot, but it was minor in relation to the positives. That said, I expect that if we had gone at a busier time of year, this could have been more of an issue, and for that reason alone, I would opt for parking included if we ever returned during peak time.

We had a most wonderful week at Wayside.

The cottage was beautiful and roomy, warm and comfortable with the added bonus of the wood burner. The kitchen was well appointed with everything we needed and the downstairs bedroom most comfortable. Wayside is dog friendly with bowls and doggy towel available. The one small thing, which I did mention to the owner was maybe upgrading the TV to a smart telly. With most people having access to subscription services I do think it would be a positive especially on long winter nights. Parking is tight at the back of the property but we parked on the main road right opposite the cottage which was much more convenient. Wayside is a delight and we have already booked another stay.

Overall the cottage was nice but is showing some signs of wear and tear and would benefit from some TLC such as the bathroom.

Disappointed that there was no spare cupboard space in the kitchen to store dried goods. In my opinion there is a lot of clutter in the kitchen cupboards that could be removed. Sadly the cottage was not dog friendly for us as the outside space was very small and concrete only so our dog wouldn't do her business there so we had the inconvenience of walking her down the nearby farm track at night and early morning. Also the wall surrounding the front outside space was too low and could easily be cleared by a medium sized dog and then they're on to the main road which is a concern for a dog owner. Sadly not a cottage we would recommend for dog owners!

    Frequent questions

    • Is it easy to walk around Whitby?

Whitby is a small, charming town on the east coast of England that is easily navigable on foot. Its compact town centre and pedestrian-friendly streets make it convenient to explore the main attraction.
