Get away from it all with our Whitby holiday cottages

Looking out over the wild North Sea, the historic seaside town of Whitby is the perfect place for a cottage getaway. Offering idyllic natural beauty, unique historical sites and classic seaside charm, it is no wonder that visitors have been flocking to this gem of a holiday destination for centuries.

Whether you choose to spend your holiday scouring the boutique shops that line the cobbled streets in the centre of Whitby or prefer to head out to the moors in search of rare wildlife, you're guaranteed to be surprised by what you find here.

Given its coastal location, Whitby is also the perfect spot to enjoy water sports, a relaxing day at the beach or some traditional fun and games along the Victorian pavilion.

If you're looking to book a short break to recharge your batteries or want to make the most of everything on offer over a couple of weeks, our selection of beautiful Whitby holiday cottages is just what you need to complete your trip.

Why choose a Whitby weekend break or staycation?

Whitby in beautiful North Yorkshire is a treat to visit any time of year.

It's one of the most popular destinations on the Yorkshire Coast, and the historic seaside town has something for everyone.

The town is most famous for its connection to the legendary Count Dracula. In the classic vampire novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula arrives in England on a ship, which washes up on the Yorkshire Coast. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by Whitby Abbey and the atmospheric cemetery in the churchyard at St Mary's Church.

Feeling energetic? Climb the 199 steps through cobbled stones and up a cliff to see the incredible Whitby Abbey for yourself. These steps were famously featured in Dracula, and the views you'll be treated to at the top are well worth the effort. The grounds are dog-friendly, and you can spend a happy few hours enjoying a picnic, wandering through the haunting abbey remains, and taking in the spectacular view.

Exploring the town of Whitby is an utter delight. The cobbled streets make you feel like you've stepped back in time, and there are plenty of lovely shops, cafes, and restaurants to pop into. The streets and alleys are charming and narrow, with lots of hidden treasures buried in antique shops to discover.

Planning on visiting Whitby around Christmas? You'll be treated to twinkling lights and gorgeous decorations in all the shop windows, making the whole town feel like Santa's grotto.

If you're looking for a more traditional seaside holiday, Whitby delivers on every level.

The Victorian-era Whitby pavilion always has something great going on, including theatre, festivals and art events. And, of course, you'll find all the trappings of a quintessential British seaside town, from charming little boutiques and gift shops to amusement arcades and tea rooms, not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the country. Make sure you bring your appetite!

There's also the beautiful Whitby Harbour to add to your list, with its charming harbourside cottages surrounding the water. This harbour was once famous for its success in the whaling industry, but today, you can join a boat trip and have a scenic tour into Whitby Bay.

While you're there, why not try your hand at a spot of crabbing? Trying to catch crabs has been a favourite pastime for years, and the best place to catch one is next to the swing bridge that separates the harbour from the old town.

Whitby is also famous for being the home of James Cook, also known as Captain Cook, the man who charted the coast of New Zealand and Australia. Captain Cook is renowned as being one of the most accomplished explorers of all time, and you can learn more about him at the Captain Cook Museum.

We've only scratched the surface of the many things to do in this beautiful Yorkshire coastal town. To discover more, stay in one of our beautiful Whitby self-catering properties and enjoy a well-earned break in one of our favourite UK holiday spots.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Graham - Verified booking

Property was as described and well presented when we arrived.

The photo of the front of the outside makes it look on a steep road, it’s hilly but not too bad until you walk to the local Pub/Railway station, now that is very steep. We walked it a few times and as long as you have decent walking shoes on and don’t have mobility problems you should be ok. One of the neighbours approached me within 5 mins of arriving because I was parked on their side of the road about to unload, They said I was blocking access, which to be fair I was, but there were no road markings or signs advising and in the dark in a strange place it wasn’t immediately obvious. She didn’t seem happy when I said I would unload before moving, but we had driven for 3 hours and wasn’t going to be bullied a local who is obviously hacked off when people park outside her house. We ended up having to park further back up the street which was no problem in the end. The rooms were nice especially the conservatory which was a lovely place to chill in the afternoon as it went dark. Staff at the pub were nice and friendly and do food Wed - Sun. Only one slight negative - though I’m a bit conflicted about it. There is a gas/electricity usage monitor in the kitchen, which on the one hand is a good idea to see what you are using, but I felt it puts a bit of undue pressure on visitors to be aware of how much the power has cost that day/week. Definitely worth staying at, train takes about 30 mins into Whitby and there are lots of quality pub/restaurants in the area, which you would probably need to drive to, and if you have bright sunny weather (though chilly) like we had, you will have a lovely time (you’ll still enjoy it even if you don’t have decent weather). I would have fed back so of the more negative issues directly to the owner but there were no contact details so had to put them on here instead.

I booked this as a 60th Birthday week away for my partner.

I looked at many cottages in this area. This one looked exactly what I was after. My grievance is that in the description given you were quite discrete about the pub being next door. Also as describing the outside area as a garden. To be honest the issue with the pub wasn't as bad as I'd expected as it was only open from 6pm - 9pm It did however make our view during this time basically rows of cars. The outside garden, was basically not much bigger than a patio. It wasn't great for us having the dog with us. There were no great views fron the cottage whilst downstairs. The only rolling countryside view was whilst standing at the toilet and looking out the window. So when we were sat out in the garden, we saw parked cars. On another note. It isn't that great an area for walking dogs. The impression I get is the local farmers don't want this and most of the public footpaths are hidden and the markers are not there. On the plus point the cottage is lovely and is well equipped. ( though the TV needs looking at. No terrestrial tv at all) I think you need to mention that it's next door to the pub, rather than declaring the distance. I think that was a bit sneaky. We have used Sykes before and found the previous chalet excellent. I shall look using you again, but will check with Google earth and check the listing a lot more throughly in future.

Picture perfect cottage in a beautiful village.

It was the perfect place to stay to see in the New Year. The cottage is cosy and charming but with all the mod cons, like excellent mattress on the beds, smart t.v (to keep our boys entertained!) and a good power shower! The kitchen is fully equipped as well. We loved having a real fire and it provided enough heat. The welcome pack when we arrived was a really lovely touch and the boys enjoyed the sweets (and we enjoyed the Prosecco!). Ugthorpe is a charming village and a great base to explore that part of the world. There is a pub right next door but we didn’t hear it at all, unfortunately It was closed one of the nights we were there or we would have gone. We will definitely come back here.

We had a great stay in Hart Cottage.

It was homely, warm and had everything you could possibly need. Beautifully furnished and stylishly decorated, it had a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. The bed was extremely comfortable and we loved the comfy chair too. There was a cupboard on the landing which had extra bedding, just in case. The fire was great, we loved it and so did the dogs. We loved feeding and watching the birds in the front garden and we kept filling the feeder up. The kitchen was super and easy to cook in. There were lots of special touches like the welcome pack with eggs, cake, milk etc, the nuts to feed the birds and the toiletries in the bathroom. I would highly recommend.

      Toilet seat needs replacing.

Carpet sweeper huge beast of a thing I struggled to use, no way I could get it upstairs. Couldn’t find the fire guard. A stair gate would have been really useful . Loved the cottage, only downside was downstairs bathroom and very steep twisted stairs, my fisherman husband didn’t read the description properly, if he had we wouldn’t have come, we are in our late 70’s! That would have been a pity as it is lovely, in a beautiful area, with very convenient pub nearly next door. All very dog friendly, central location for walking, fishing and steam trains, lovely local people wherever we went. Recommend for fit and slim.
