Get away from it all with our Northumberland Holiday Cottages

Northumberland is England's northernmost county up by the Scottish Borders and is a must-visit holiday destination for fun, adventure, history, and outstanding natural beauty.

Book one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and you'll find yourself in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the countryside is wild and rugged and the heritage coastline is studded with beautiful hidden coves and sandy beaches.

With hundreds of beautiful Northumberland self-catering properties, Snaptrip is your one-stop shop to find the holiday home of your dreams. Whether you're travelling with friends, family, or your special someone, take a look through our wide selection of countryside and beachside cottages and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Why choose a Northumberland weekend break or staycation?

The county of Northumberland is one of the most sparsely populated locations in the UK, making it the ideal place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Over a quarter of the county is made up of the Northumberland National Park, so if you're looking for a proper escape from the stresses of everyday life, you couldn't find a more perfect destination. From wide sandy beaches, pretty moorlands dotted with heather, roaring waterfalls, rolling hillsides, and ancient woodlands, there is plenty to explore.

The beaches in Northumberland are clean and pristine. Imagine white sand, glorious blue skies, and even bluer waters. Bamburgh Beach has got to be one of our favourites. Bamburgh is an idyllic coastal village with everything you could want from a small seaside town. The beach is exquisite for relaxing and playing, and the village is lovely for walking around. There's also the impressive Bamburgh Castle to explore if you fancy a break from the beach.

To experience the whole of Northumberland's epic coastline, join the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route is a whopping 62 miles long, and while it can take up to seven days to complete, it's well worth the amble. You'll see the beautiful coast, incredible beaches, and sweet fishing villages.

Northumberland is a historic county littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed with their imposing fortresses, castles and monasteries.

There are more castles here than in any other county, 39 to be exact, and each one has its own character. These castles go back to the Norman times, built to defend the region from invaders. Some favourites include the majestic Alnwick (famed as the filming location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh castles, the haunting ruins of Warkworth, and the isolated Dunstanburgh Castle.

Speaking of history, Northumberland is the home of Hadrian's Walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most famous frontier of the Roman Empire. The walls span 73 miles from coast to coast but are the most intact in Northumberland. The wall weaves up and down hills, and a walk along it offers the chance to see the remains of towers, turrets, and forts.

If you want to do something truly memorable, make sure you go stargazing during your visit. The incredibly low levels of light pollution make Northumberland an amazing place to see the stars in all their glory, especially if you stay in the designated dark sky area around Kielder. It's even possible to spot the Milky Way and identify planets from the observatory.

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a trip to Holy Island. This four-square-mile island can only be accessed at low tide. While you're there, visit the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle, perched high up on a volcanic rock. The island also has a small harbour, a nature reserve, a pretty village, and priory ruins.

We've only scratched the surface of things to do in this incredible county. To experience all there is to discover, stay in one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and plan an epic adventure.

What our customers say about their holidays

What a beautiful cottage – so clean & beautifully appointed. The delicious goodies in the welcome pack were quickly enjoyed, so thoughtful. It was so peaceful sitting out in the walled garden & wandering up the road. Gazing at the Milky Way, crystal clear. Running the gauntlet with the pheasants & grouse. Enjoying clucking to the friendly chickens. We recommend Bamburgh castle & beach. The Potted Lobster where we had the seafood platter. If you want to have this then don’t eat for at least 8 hours before! The whole coastline is stunning – wandering on pristine almost deserted beaches, cute villages, imposing castles. Lindisfarne a gem with its tidal causeway. Cragside was a lovely find – National Trust. Reserve a full day for its fascinating house (another residence of the Armstrongs – also of Bamburgh Castle fame) and beautiful grounds full of hidden treasures. It was so lovely knowing we would come home to Holburn Mill Cottage each day. Build a fire and cosy in with the thoughtful & fun games provided. Thanks also for the maps and guidebooks. We’ll be back!

First of all, thank you so much for the huge welcome pack – delicious! Furthermore, your cottage is absolutely wonderful, so warm, cosy and clean. It will be hard to leave. I loved the sound of the nearby stream and the sky on clear nights. We even saw two shooting stars. New Year’s Eve was calm and relaxed, just what we wanted. Of course, I have to mention the weather as we had a variety of it; our week started with mild temperatures, hard winds and some rain, to be continued with degrees below zero and a lot of sunshine. In the end there was snow all around us. As the area offers a large amount of things to do it was a bit difficult to decide what to do. We did go to the beautiful coast, went hiking in the Cheviot Hills, covered in snow and had incredible views and did some walks from the doorstep including St. Cuthbert’s Cave. Again, thank you very much for this amazing week. We intend to come back soon in order to complete our hiking plans and sightseeing tour.

We’ve had a lovely week and have been so fortunate with the weather. We have loved every minute here especially being greeted by ‘the girls’ on our arrival & every time we went to hang out the washing. Even sitting in the garden they kept us company & provided us with the freshest most delicious eggs. Our first visit to Northumberland, we’ve loved discovering its history, it’s wonderful sandy beaches, its castles, Holy Island of Lindisfarne and sampling the local food especially on the veranda of The Jolly Fisherman at Craster. A special mention and thank you to our hosts Alan and Christine for their genuine friendliness & concern for our comfort & happiness.

A lovely cottage in a peaceful setting. We were particularly impressed with COVID precautions and general cleanliness of the cottage. Excellent welcome pack on arrival. Location was the key factor since this was an area of Northumberland with which we were not familiar and it was excellent. It was also important to be all on one level and to be pet (dog) free. The cottage was lovely in all aspects. The generous local produce in the welcome pack provided for all our needs. Excellent. The owner was most helpful and friendly. We have used Coquet Cottages previously and have always found the company to be trustworthy and relaiable.

Very comfortable. Thank you for a lovely stay in your beautifully renovated cottage. You have provided all we needed for a comfortable break in very peaceful surroundings. We appreciated the little extra touches, such as the welcome pack, door hooks, Wi-Fi and well-equipped kitchen. We enjoyed visiting Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle despite rather cool weather and some rain on the Sunday. If we come back in warmer weather we will enjoy sitting in the lovely secluded garden! It was nice to meet you both and have a chat about the mill and surrounding area.
