Get away from it all with our Northumberland Holiday Cottages

Northumberland is England's northernmost county up by the Scottish Borders and is a must-visit holiday destination for fun, adventure, history, and outstanding natural beauty.

Book one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and you'll find yourself in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the countryside is wild and rugged and the heritage coastline is studded with beautiful hidden coves and sandy beaches.

With hundreds of beautiful Northumberland self-catering properties, Snaptrip is your one-stop shop to find the holiday home of your dreams. Whether you're travelling with friends, family, or your special someone, take a look through our wide selection of countryside and beachside cottages and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Why choose a Northumberland weekend break or staycation?

The county of Northumberland is one of the most sparsely populated locations in the UK, making it the ideal place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Over a quarter of the county is made up of the Northumberland National Park, so if you're looking for a proper escape from the stresses of everyday life, you couldn't find a more perfect destination. From wide sandy beaches, pretty moorlands dotted with heather, roaring waterfalls, rolling hillsides, and ancient woodlands, there is plenty to explore.

The beaches in Northumberland are clean and pristine. Imagine white sand, glorious blue skies, and even bluer waters. Bamburgh Beach has got to be one of our favourites. Bamburgh is an idyllic coastal village with everything you could want from a small seaside town. The beach is exquisite for relaxing and playing, and the village is lovely for walking around. There's also the impressive Bamburgh Castle to explore if you fancy a break from the beach.

To experience the whole of Northumberland's epic coastline, join the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route is a whopping 62 miles long, and while it can take up to seven days to complete, it's well worth the amble. You'll see the beautiful coast, incredible beaches, and sweet fishing villages.

Northumberland is a historic county littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed with their imposing fortresses, castles and monasteries.

There are more castles here than in any other county, 39 to be exact, and each one has its own character. These castles go back to the Norman times, built to defend the region from invaders. Some favourites include the majestic Alnwick (famed as the filming location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh castles, the haunting ruins of Warkworth, and the isolated Dunstanburgh Castle.

Speaking of history, Northumberland is the home of Hadrian's Walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most famous frontier of the Roman Empire. The walls span 73 miles from coast to coast but are the most intact in Northumberland. The wall weaves up and down hills, and a walk along it offers the chance to see the remains of towers, turrets, and forts.

If you want to do something truly memorable, make sure you go stargazing during your visit. The incredibly low levels of light pollution make Northumberland an amazing place to see the stars in all their glory, especially if you stay in the designated dark sky area around Kielder. It's even possible to spot the Milky Way and identify planets from the observatory.

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a trip to Holy Island. This four-square-mile island can only be accessed at low tide. While you're there, visit the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle, perched high up on a volcanic rock. The island also has a small harbour, a nature reserve, a pretty village, and priory ruins.

We've only scratched the surface of things to do in this incredible county. To experience all there is to discover, stay in one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and plan an epic adventure.

Enjoy excellent facilities such as free WiFi, private driveways, enclosed gardens, fully-equipped kitchens, and extra special touches such as hot tubs and games rooms. Many of our cottages are also dog-friendly, so even your furry friend can come along and join in the fun.

    • Mrs Dransfield - Verified booking

The plus points first. Harbour Hideaway is in a fantastic location in Seahouses. Very handy for all the lovely local amenities. The convenient parking space is right outside the property. The decor is modern and the layout well thought out. For the size it is well equipped, the combined microwave is a larger model. We found the sofa bed to be comfortable and easy to convert from sofa to a bed. The views from the property are beautiful, with lovely walks along the coast. However, Harbour Hideaway is very small, once the sofa bed is made up, you can only just walk around it. The main space, not including the front door recess is app 2.3 metres, (less 40cm for the kitchen run, approx 1.9 metres) by 3.2 metres approx. There is a small recess for the front door. We found damp and high levels of humidity to be a problem and have provided the owner with photos. Thankfully we had lovely weather because it would be difficult drying wet coats, shoes and walking coats in such a confined space. There is very little storage space and we had to leave rucksacks, walking shoes and jackets in the car. All bedding and towels are provided but there were only two pillows, for two people. There is not room in the sofa bed storage for all the bedding, we had to leave a pillow out during the day. We stayed for five nights and found it a little challenging because of the lack of space and lack of storage.

The house is lovely but a few thing let it down, general maintenance really. There has obviously been a major leek from the bathroom through to the lounge ceiling at some point but the large patch on the ceiling has not been cleaned or painted over and has mould spores on it. Also, just a point , the upstairs bathroom does not have an extractor fan or window which seems a bid odd The back door has some of the plastic hanging offf and sticking out. We did attempt to hoover as suggested in your folder but the hoover had a dodgy plug , (only worked if you wiggled the wire) and it was so full it just dumped what we did attempt to hoover up. We didn’t empty it, when your paying the money we paid I don’t want to start emptying hoovers . The outside would be lovely but we had to weed our way out of the patio doors, the path to the garden was over grown with difficulty getting passed , especially for my 4 year old grandson, more weeding to get through only to find the lawn hadn’t been mown, for some time, looking at it and the top patio was also overgrown. It was however a secure garden for the dogs. We did however have good access to the beach ,which was clear. It is a great family house and a lovely setting with great beach access, just a bit tired and needs a some maintenance. We did have a great time and enjoyed our stay and would consider coming back.

Fabulous house, very comfortable and really well equipped. The garden was lovely, enclosed which was perfect for us relaxing out there with our dog. The off street parking was also great. Having used Coquet Cottages before we had high expectations and we certainly were not disappointed. We would definitely book Hedgehog House again. It was lovely for Michelle the owner to get in touch and personally welcome us and make sure we were settled in. The variety of items in the welcome basket was the best we have ever received, some other rental companies have stopped offering welcome baskets. I am delighted to find that Coquet have not done this. It’s a lovely treat to find all the goodies on arrival. Coquet is the most impressive holiday rental company we’ve used to date (and we’ve used a lot!). The property portfolio is extensive and must surely have something for everyone. It’s great to have the dog sitting service which we’ve used both times we’ve booked with you. We will certainly be back next time we holiday in Northumberland.

The Boathouse location was beautiful! However for 7 people there were 2 bathrooms. 1 was en-suite with a shower, bath and hand held shower. The other shared by the rest of the party (6 adults) had a shower, bath and toilet on the first floor. We felt this was inadequate. As the location was practically on the beach , there was a lot of sand and it would of been useful to have an outside hosepipe at the back of the property to clean away the sand of us all before entering the house. The shower was blocked and we had to use a plunger everyday to unblock the shower. We have pictures to show you if needed. (I am guessing the owner is already aware of this as there is a clear water damage stain on the roof of the living room (under the shower)) The pans/oven trays and other kitchen utensils had to be cleaned before able to be used as they where dirty.

The cottage is in an amazing setting, nestled among the dunes at the foot of Bamburgh Castle so the location is perfect for the beach but is also only a short stroll to the excellent butchers, three pubs and delis in the village. The road on which the cottage is located is quiet at night although it is very near two beach car parks so there is some traffic during the day. The kitchen was well appointed and the sitting room ideal for us to watch the Euro final. The three double bedrooms are spacious and the beds very comfortable. There were only three of us staying so the cottage was fine for us but be aware that if all the bedrooms are occupied by two people per bedroom then as one bedroom is en suite, it means there will be only one loo available (in the family bathroom) for the remaining occupants of the other three bedrooms.
