"We have given a low overall rating despite the higher scores in the other categories because we were very disappointed on our arrival and first evening at the cottage. When we arrived the cottage was cold as there was no heating on and an alarm was sounding. We found the central heating controller and turned the heating on but surely this should have been done for our arrival; it was November! Then we tried to have a hot drink only to discover there was no cold water to fill the kettle. After some searching we found a little notice in the kitchen window saying that if no cold water had been run for 24 hours then an anti flood device would cut it off and an alarm would be sounding! We managed to find the device and reset it and then we had running cold water.Later in the evening we wanted to shower but the water was cold, despite it being an electric shower. After a bit of investigation we noticed it had two water feed pipes, not one as with most electric showers. We then realised it must run off the hot water tank and when we looked we found that the hot water was switched off altogether so we had to wait around two hours for the water to heat up so we could shower! To say we were a little annoyed and made to feel unwelcome on our arrival was an understatement. We holiday in the Lake District at this time every year and usually the cottages are warm and cosy when we arrive, often with a welcome gift and the fire lit. This was certainly not the case with Mews Cottage! The Comfort and Equipment score would be higher if the heating was better in the conservatory. The rest of the cottage was fine but this was woefully inadequate."

"Wonderful view of Grasmere and ideally located for walks to Rydal and over into Langdale. Really an apartment rather than a cottage as the property is an integral part of Huntingstile House. Lovely gardens, patios and a charming entrance. Very secluded. Inside, the kitchen has everything you would expect, but some of the cabinet doors are very worn and cracked. The lounge is excellent and very cosy with real style and quality. The double bedroom is up a very narrow and steep staircase and the en suite loo is in a very small space. The twin room beyond the bathroom is in need of redecoration and the water pump noise intrudes all night every few seconds. The main bath and basin taps are in need of renewal and the tile grouting is very old. Also, behind the net curtain, the inside of the window frame was black with mildew. However, the whole property was really warm and comfortable. We were surprised, though, that there was no welcome pack, not even a pint of milk. There were some tea bags and an empty coffee jar ! The whole ambience of the property was stunning, thanks to its architecture and location but for the sake of some inexpensive updates, a few cleaning oversights and £10 worth of milk, tea, coffee and even gingerbread, it could be outstanding.I would definitely book this again"

"This was actually a tricky review to do, the cottage is great and the location beautiful. I was however left feeling a bit, well disappointed. Its funny how sometimes in life it is the little things that you remember rather than the big things. For instance the hot water was not on, there was nothing in the book as to which switch made it work so just ended up turning them all on.What really upset me with this one was no towels, it took an age to get through on the telephone, then to find my booking, then to find out that towels did not come with the property, bedding did but not towels, I was then chastised because if towels had come with the property it would have said so!!!!! I did point out that there was a sofa there but it did not say that either, or even a roof for that matter, what an absolutely ridiculous comment to make!"

"This is a lovely spacious house with the feel of a comfy home. We were a party of 5 adults and there was plenty of room to spread around. The location is private but close enough to all the Lake District has to offer, with walks on the doorstep and fantastic views, we saw a wide variety of birds in the garden, including woodpeckers. It is clean and well equipped. To be helpful the cattle grid outside the property is noisy and walkers pass close by the house, these blended into the background for us and we didn't find they distracted from our holiday. The instructions for the cooker and how to deal with the rubbish were confusing and could do with updating. I think anyone booking this property will be glad they did, we had a fantastic time and may well return again in the future."

"Very nice place to stay. There is a lot of history with the cottage, we really enjoyed reading about Harriett, and spent some time carrying out our own research. It has a lovely feel to it. There is parking for one car in the garage at the entrance but it is a bit tight to turn round if you park in front of the house and the neighbour has a car parked in front of their property. The conservatory is really cold and to heat with one standalone heater is inadequate, but it must be lovely in milder conditions. The view is lovely to the rear. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs in the Town, although a bit expensive. We would definitely recommend it as a great place to stay. Having to collect the keys at the office in Windermere was inconvenient."
