This stunning northern city boasts a wealth of cultural and historic landmarks, from 13th century walls to the magnificent York Minster cathedral. Things to do when you stay in York Cottages

It’s a cliché, but a visit to York really is like stepping back in time. While other cities have morphed and changed to keep up with the modern age, there are parts of the city that have remained untouched for nearly two millennia. York’s historic highlights are too numerous to mention, but include the remains of the Roman fort of Eboracum and the medieval street named the Shambles; a definite must visit. There are many more of York’s treasures on display in York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre.

Our UK comedy clubs guide includes some great comedy nights in York.

York is hugely popular with tourists, so you’ll find plenty to see and do as you meander through the ancient streets, including top drawer shops, cafés and restaurants serving hearty, traditional fare. Head away from the city and the tourists to discover some of the most breath-taking natural landscapes in the whole country, including North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast, so don’t forget to pack those walking boots, and a camera.

York cottages are the perfect accommodation if you’re looking to stay in this historic city, giving you the freedom and flexibility to explore, and packed with character. York cottages are your own little hideaway in easy reach of all the main landmarks – making an amazing family holiday that you’ll remember forever.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • John - Verified booking

The property is in a good location for visiting York and the surrounding area.

There are very good eating establishments nearby as well as the York Park and Ride facility. The following feedback is given with the intention of being helpful: - a welcome pack would have been appreciated, even just a pint of milk and some tea and coffee sachets. Rather surprising there was nothing. - the bed linen needs attention, there were stains on a pillow case and a bed sheet. - towels were provided but one had a hole in it. - the shower cubicle needed cleaning before we were prepared to use it. - overall more attention should be given to cleaning the Lodge, there were dust gatherings on some furniture and debris under the settee cushions. - the place suits a couple yet there are two single beds and no headboard. It would be far better with a double bed, headboard and new bed linen. - some thought might be given to the bedroom furniture as it is very dated pine furniture and cluttered. A wardrobe able to hang ladies dresses would be far better. - the outside patios would benefit from a jet wash and some weeding. Sorry, but great location but let down by attention to detail.

I have to say our stay at Lodge Cottage was absolutely brilliant.

It looked quite small when we 1st pulled up ,but inside was very spacious. The cottage itself was very well presented inside , everything you needed for a home from home. We were relaxed from the minute we arrived, loved watching the rabbits running around in the meadow outside. The cottage is well situated just outside Knapton village, far enough out for a peaceful stay, yet near enough to do all the things we wanted to do, Visit York etc. I only met the owner once but he was really lovely. They even left us fresh milk in the fridge on our arrival. I would certainly stay there again. Forget the extortionate price of hotels , go for a Sykes cottage, its worth every penny. Sykes themselves are a really good company. I have no complaints at all 11 out of 10 :)

We had a wonderful stay at Apple Tree Cottage.

The cottage is the perfect size for a small family and is in a great location. The cottage had everything that we needed with the added bonus of a lovely lawned area on the grounds which had a childrens playing frame which our three year old daughter was thrilled about. The owners were welcoming without being intrusive and we were greeted with a delightful welcome back which included homemade scones. Yum, yum! The cottage is in a great location for visiting many family friendly locations such as the following: Designer Outlet-10mins Piglets Adventure Farm-13mins The Web Adventure Park-16mins York-21mins Williams Den-30mins Flamingo Land-35mins Scarborough & Whitby-1hr 3mins Many thanks for a wonderful stay!

We had a great stay and the location in particular was fab.

We liked how peaceful the site was and how friendly the hosts were. Kids loved the open space and little play area. It was great being able to let them roam free knowing they were safe behind the gated and well-fenced property. Cottage was the perfect base for exploring York and spacious enough for four. Kitchen well equipped and clean bedding/towels. The tiled floor could do with a good scrub, it turned our socks black! I found the mattress and pillows uncomfortable but that is personal preference. Everyone else slept great. Would have benefitted from a selection of leaflets about local attractions. All in all, it was a great stay and would highly recommend. Thank you!

It's a nice and cosy cottage in a quiet location with views onto a grassy field and conveniently located.

Every morning we saw a squirrel running along the patio or fence and there were bunnies too. We liked the fact that the key to the cottage was in a key box so that we were totally flexible regarding the time of arrival. The owners were away during our stay but made sure that we knew how to get in touch with them which we appreciated a lot. We did indeed contact them once and they replied immediately. The bed was very comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed and the bathroom was good too but a bit small. There were many leaflets and brochures about things to do and see in the area and a road atlas which came in very handy for us. We would stay there again.
