What our customers say about their holidays

    • Nicola - Verified booking

The cottage is cold and draughty.

This is exacerbated by the fact that when you check in the heating is set on minimum and there is no immediate hot water either. This really does not make the cottage very welcoming. We appreciate that we are in a fuel crisis and costs are high but when you know guests are arriving on a cold December evening it is not acceptable to arrive to a very cold house. I accept that there are 2 electric heaters that can be used to help warm the house but these were inadequate and made very little difference despite them being in constant use throughout our stay. The type of heating for the house is also inadequate and at no point, despite carefully following the instructions, did we feel warm. The heater in the kitchen didn’t work. Added to this, there is a real fire which I would have expected, given that the heating was poor, the first basket of firewood to be free and then any additional wood charged. This is what we have experienced when we have stayed in other accommodation. However this was not the case and a charge was in place for any. We did eventually purchase some wood from a local supermarket and although the fire was nice the draughts remained. We accept this is an old cottage but draught excluders should be considered. We have stayed in other cottages in Staithes and not had this issue as they have been warm and cosy. The 5pm check in is the latest we have ever experienced. If there was a late check out I could understand that but checkout is the fairly standard 10am so the check in time does not make sense. The statement on the booking that early check ins and late check outs are not accepted along with ‘must not do’ instructions around the house and from Sykes cottages just gives a feeling of a lack of any personal touch to this holiday when compared with other companies/owners we have used. As you can see we are quite disappointed.

Lovely cottage - the owner said they’d had many holidays there and that was what made a difference I think.

It felt cosy like a real “home” as soon as you walked in. The decor was not the cheap “make do and mend” that you often find - it was really nicely and tastefully done. The cottage was very well equipped and the owners had anticipated most of the needs of visitors. The welcome pack was very welcome. Thank you. The cottage was lovely and clean, very warm and comfortable. It has traditional features (including a few spooky creaks and groans. We swear we heard a young child say “Daddy” just outside the bedroom door one night….. we hid under the duvet) A couple of “even better if’s”: (1) the dishwasher didn’t work properly and after three washes we had to wash the pots by hand as they were not clean at all (2) maybe leave some washing up liquid and a couple of dishwasher tabs for the next visitors (we left dish cloths). (3) The property is very difficult to find. I couldn’t find it on Google Earth so texted for clarification a few days before we went. I did not get a reply. We couldn’t find it where the post code led us, so we scoured the streets - the locals in the pub hadn’t heard of it either. The contact numbers provided were all the same number and not answered (no signal in the village so had to drive a couple of miles out of the village till I could get a signal). At one point, we even considered having to return home or find a Premier Inn for the night. I don’t know if this will help future visitors but I took the “what three words” reference: ///stylist.recorders.signature Somehow, we did spot the cottage on what was our last attempt. Negatives aside, all in all a lovely visit to a lovely cottage in a beautiful village. Our third stay in Staithes and the best cottage so far. We will be back.

I booked this as a 60th Birthday week away for my partner.

I looked at many cottages in this area. This one looked exactly what I was after. My grievance is that in the description given you were quite discrete about the pub being next door. Also as describing the outside area as a garden. To be honest the issue with the pub wasn't as bad as I'd expected as it was only open from 6pm - 9pm It did however make our view during this time basically rows of cars. The outside garden, was basically not much bigger than a patio. It wasn't great for us having the dog with us. There were no great views fron the cottage whilst downstairs. The only rolling countryside view was whilst standing at the toilet and looking out the window. So when we were sat out in the garden, we saw parked cars. On another note. It isn't that great an area for walking dogs. The impression I get is the local farmers don't want this and most of the public footpaths are hidden and the markers are not there. On the plus point the cottage is lovely and is well equipped. ( though the TV needs looking at. No terrestrial tv at all) I think you need to mention that it's next door to the pub, rather than declaring the distance. I think that was a bit sneaky. We have used Sykes before and found the previous chalet excellent. I shall look using you again, but will check with Google earth and check the listing a lot more throughly in future.

Hello, Unfortunately, I have quite a few points for improvement.

Cons: LOUNGE - Tired, lounge furniture and soft furnishings (cushions, throws etc). - In much need of decorating. KITCHEN - No hand soap (basic requirement) - Only two wine glasses, we had to borrow two more form the pub (basic requirement). - No salt and pepper (basic requirement) - No large saucepan. - No cleaning fluid. - No kitchen roll. BATHROOM - No hand soap (basic requirement). - Shower - although hot, the flo was weak. ATTIC BEDROOM - Bedside light on left-hand-side not working. FIRST FLOOR BEDROOM - Single bed on right, mattress needs replacing, as lost all firmness. HALL/STAIRWAYS - All carpets need cleaning. -------------------------------------------- Pros: - Great location. - Nice, clean bathroom - Great working fireplace - Warm - when storage heaters up and running. - Nice attic bedroom I would stay there again if all my points were addressed.

Tawny Owl is a lovely cottage furnished to a high standard and with every piece of equipment and fittings you could ever want. It was ideal for our 9 month old grandson as everything is on one level and both cot and highchair were of high quality. We very much appreciated the extra touch of a bottle of Prosecco and chocolates in addition to tea, coffee and milk ready for our first brew on arrival. The hot tub was also appreciated at the end of a busy day visiting the area. We also very much enjoyed going to Runswick Bay which is very close to the cottage (about 5 minutes drive). Liz was very welcoming, helpful and prompt with any query we had. Although close to the main road, the cottage offers plenty of parking space which was an essential for us with baby equipment and there is easy access to Staithes by foot from the cottage (about 20 minute walk).
