What our customers say about their holidays

On first impressions, the cottage appeared much bigger and nicer than the photos had suggested however it was not without it’s problems.

Firstly, getting in touch with the owner was very difficult, they had only supplied a land line number and I failed to get hold of them on a number of occasions before our arrival. When I did contact them, it was to request a high chair and travel cot be available for us on arrival. We arrived after 7pm (past our 6 month old baby’s bed time) and were keen to get him to sleep. However there was no travel cot (or high chair) set up. A neighbour who showed us where the cottage was offered to get their travel cot for us but did not have a mattress. They managed to contact the owner who advised us that a travel cot was in a cupboard in the master bedroom. However there was still no mattress for this. We tried contacting the owner ourselves but they were unconcactable. Forutnately, we knew someone who lived in the village and they were able to let us borrow their mattress, otherwise our baby would have had nowhere to sleep. The rest of our experience at the cottage was pleasant enough however it did lack some finishing touches e.g. no dishwasher tablets, washing powder, salt, coffee etc. not essential items but ones which, in our experience, have always been provided. Both of the TVs did not work on arrival and I had to tune them in. A couple of lightbulbs did not work, including a bedside lamp and one of the lights in the bedroom started buzzing in the middle of the night and I had to remove a lightbulb to get it to stop. There is also a rather strange situation with the blinds on the upsstairs landing. They do not close properly, meaning anyone staying in the hotel next door can look up and see in to the property. Not great in the middle of the night when walking from the bedroom to the bathroom. Overall, it’s hard to say whether we would recommend it or not. With a little extra effort from the owner the property could have been amazing but a lack of attention to detail let it down somewhat.

Had an amazing weeks stay in St Hilda’s Cottage during mid November.

The cottage is situated on a complex with a boutique hotel and a couple of other self catering properties and whilst we saw other residents, there was no disturbance from any noise. The complex manager Debbie went above and beyond to make sure our stay was as comfortable as possible, delivering fresh eggs during our stay and even gave us a quick tour of the hotel to view some of the amazing rooms they have on site. The cottage had everything we could ask for, 2 ample sized double bedrooms, an open plan kitchen/living room/dining area, large bathroom with a powerful shower and a very welcome hot tub in the garden outside to relax in after a day walking. There was outside table and chairs and even a pizza oven but, due to the time of year we stayed, these were unused by ourselves. The kitchen was both clean and well equipped and the living room came complete with reclining sofa & armchair and a large smart TV. The cottage is located just a few minute walk to the Cleveland Way coastal path midway between Runswick Bay and Staithes with a stunning walk in both directions. Whitby and Saltburn are both just a short car journey away. We enjoyed amazing meals out at No 20 Restaurant and The Badger Hounds, both just 2-3 minute walk but I would advise booking well in advance for both. For sea food lovers, Whitby Crab Company is just down the road in Staithes with amazing dressed crab, lobster and smoked fish and for kippers there’s no better than Fortune’s in Whitby. I’m certain we’ll be back, we couldn’t fault the cottage, location or the amazing local food choices. Finally, be aware that this property changed hands during the early part of 2021 so be mindful to disregard any negative reviews prior to this time.

Our stay at Hildas Cottage was lovely.

The cottage is situated in a fantastic location just a 5min walk from the coastal path, and both Staithes and Runswick were easily reachable with the kids and dog in tow. The bus stop outside the cottage was also perfect for a day trip to Whitby! The village of Hinderwell has a fantastic butchers and the Badgers Hound pub served lovely food. The cottage itself is perfectly fine with plenty of room for a family of four. It is clean and comfortable with everything required to make our stay pleasant. Not to mention fresh eggs every day picked straight from the chicken pen :) A couple of minor criticisms are that, the decor generally appears to be dated and tired, especially when compared to the other cottages in the complex, however we knew this when booking so cant really complain. There is also a lack of clothes storage, especially in the second bedroom which had no wardrobe for hanging any of our teenagers clothes. The largest disappointment however related to the hot tub (which was one of the main reasons we booked this specific cottage), which was not cleaned during our 7 day stay. This meant that after 4-5 days the water was simply not safe for us to use. We did raise this with Debbie who added some additional chemicals, however this had little effect and meant we weren't able to use the tub for the last 2 days of our stay. When we've stayed at other lodges/cottages with a hot tub it has been cleaned on a daily basis, something I would suggest needs to be taken on board at St Hilda's?? All in all a pleasant stay, and Debbie who looked after us was truly pleasant and lovely. We'll definitely be back to explore more of the area, however truth be told, we will probably try somewhere different for our next stay.

First the con(s) Sykes listing says no internet which may put people off, but the internet is definitely available and effective :-) All the rest are pro's.

I did a lot of research and couldn't understand the differing reviews. Glad I gave it the benefit of the doubt. We got stuck on the motorway for hours but Debbie rang to say the cottage was ready and to give her a call whatever time we got there. She was so welcoming, friendly and helpful and greeted us with fresh duck eggs. Then we enjoyed a hot tub and a drink to relax. Yes the hot tub cover needs replacing and it was explained that it has been on order but this in no way bothered us, just mention it in case others put it as a problem. The owners are continually changing and updating the complex of farm buildings and their design and ideas are inspirational. I wouldn't agree that the cottage is tired as others have said, although it isn't pristine, it is a holiday let, but it is lovely and we really enjoyed it. The only thing missing was an ice cube tray!! There was a lot of work (not intrusive in any way) in the farm complex both in the other holiday lets and the boutique B &B. I had a peek at the studios Marrakesh and Rekyavik which are both stunning (Marrakesh blew me away). Then had a look at the newly refurbed other lets and people are in for a real treat. All in all I couldn't have chosen better for my North Yorkshire experience, Debbie and the others were helpful and cheerful and St Hilda's cottage in the lovely village of Hinderwell was a lovely holiday.

      What a fabulous find.

The cottage itself was clean and really cosy. Great kitchen space for cooking and loved the open plan. Lovely bedrooms and a huge bathroom. The hot tub was just idyllic after days walking on the beach. The garden was completely enclosed for my pooch who is an escape artist. Very accommodating hosts who had to climb over the fence after we managed to lock ourselves out. 5 minute walk from the badger and hounds which serves amazing pub food and was ultra friendly. Close to many of the east coasts best beaches so visited a different spot every day. Our only problem was that the pooch lost her wag after spraining her tail from over wagging. That’s how much she enjoyed it! Yes, a couple of kitchen cupboards are loose and there are a few carpet marks upstairs. But so what? It’s a cottage that accepts dogs so wear and tear is to be expected. It was pristine in every other way. Great place to rejuvenate.
