Get away from it all with our Northumberland Holiday Cottages

Northumberland is England's northernmost county up by the Scottish Borders and is a must-visit holiday destination for fun, adventure, history, and outstanding natural beauty.

Book one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and you'll find yourself in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the countryside is wild and rugged and the heritage coastline is studded with beautiful hidden coves and sandy beaches.

With hundreds of beautiful Northumberland self-catering properties, Snaptrip is your one-stop shop to find the holiday home of your dreams. Whether you're travelling with friends, family, or your special someone, take a look through our wide selection of countryside and beachside cottages and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Why choose a Northumberland weekend break or staycation?

The county of Northumberland is one of the most sparsely populated locations in the UK, making it the ideal place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Over a quarter of the county is made up of the Northumberland National Park, so if you're looking for a proper escape from the stresses of everyday life, you couldn't find a more perfect destination. From wide sandy beaches, pretty moorlands dotted with heather, roaring waterfalls, rolling hillsides, and ancient woodlands, there is plenty to explore.

The beaches in Northumberland are clean and pristine. Imagine white sand, glorious blue skies, and even bluer waters. Bamburgh Beach has got to be one of our favourites. Bamburgh is an idyllic coastal village with everything you could want from a small seaside town. The beach is exquisite for relaxing and playing, and the village is lovely for walking around. There's also the impressive Bamburgh Castle to explore if you fancy a break from the beach.

To experience the whole of Northumberland's epic coastline, join the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route is a whopping 62 miles long, and while it can take up to seven days to complete, it's well worth the amble. You'll see the beautiful coast, incredible beaches, and sweet fishing villages.

Northumberland is a historic county littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed with their imposing fortresses, castles and monasteries.

There are more castles here than in any other county, 39 to be exact, and each one has its own character. These castles go back to the Norman times, built to defend the region from invaders. Some favourites include the majestic Alnwick (famed as the filming location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh castles, the haunting ruins of Warkworth, and the isolated Dunstanburgh Castle.

Speaking of history, Northumberland is the home of Hadrian's Walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most famous frontier of the Roman Empire. The walls span 73 miles from coast to coast but are the most intact in Northumberland. The wall weaves up and down hills, and a walk along it offers the chance to see the remains of towers, turrets, and forts.

If you want to do something truly memorable, make sure you go stargazing during your visit. The incredibly low levels of light pollution make Northumberland an amazing place to see the stars in all their glory, especially if you stay in the designated dark sky area around Kielder. It's even possible to spot the Milky Way and identify planets from the observatory.

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a trip to Holy Island. This four-square-mile island can only be accessed at low tide. While you're there, visit the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle, perched high up on a volcanic rock. The island also has a small harbour, a nature reserve, a pretty village, and priory ruins.

We've only scratched the surface of things to do in this incredible county. To experience all there is to discover, stay in one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and plan an epic adventure.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Patrick - Verified booking

The property is in a great location and clearly has been recently modernised to a fairly high standard.

However there are a number of small issues which if addressed would make this property five star in all respects: 1. There is no information about any of the facilities to assist people who stay there - heating, lighting, blinds etc. Simple to do but it seems to be an issue which clients have highlighted consistently over the last few months. 2. The log burner in the lounge could not be used as it leaked smoke from the seal between the chamber and the chimney. A health and safety issue but one which Im fairly sure could have been fairly quickly resolved -probably the biggest issue. 3.Related to this it meant the underfloor heating needed to be boosted to supplement the heating - this cannot be done quickly to make the room warm and comfortable also there were no instructions relating to this. 4. The showers - the owner phoned us to advise before we arrived that one of the showers was out of commission. This was not an issue for us as there was an en-suite shower in the other bedroom. However this shower did not operate properly as the overhead part of the shower would not work. Again a fairly simple repair needed. 5. Blinds for the vellux roof windows in this room should be fitted (not an issue for us) but it does make for a very bright room as soon as dawn kicks in. 6.The front door lock is not easy to operate from the point of view of getting out of the house as there is only a small turning 'handle' to hold on to. Whilst I have listed a few things here we loved our stay at the house but found it a bit frustrating when I read the reviews that many of the issues had already been identified but were still outstanding. Just take time to resolve them and take away some of the hassle for all concerned.

This was our first stay at The Old Cart Shed and we weren't disappointed. The property was just perfect - everything had been thought of, from the provision of dishwasher and laundry tablets to the toiletries in the bathrooms and lots of towels. The property was warm when we arrived on a cold February afternoon and although there was a small log burning stove we only used it once as we just didn't need it. Notwithstanding, there was a massive basket of logs and some kindling if we had. The location was perfect. The property isn't in the middle of nowhere and it isn't quite clear from the photographs but there are properties to each side and opposite. However, the Cart Shed isn't overlooked or attached so it was perfectly quiet save for the odd car on the road outside. There was ample parking for two cars and bins right next to the parking area. All the lights outside worked and there were very detailed descriptions of how everything worked in a folder inside the property. From reading the visitors book it is clear that lots of people return here year after year and I can see why. Marvellous!

This apartment was totally unsuitable for habitation. There was a damp smell, which hit you on entering the cottage. The upstairs bedroom was like a greenhouse as the sun had been out all day. The headroom in the bedroom was very restricted in places, especially when moving around the bed. We did not stay overnight in the cottage as I was worried about the damp. My wife had Sepsis in November 2022 and we could not take the chance of any spores being present in the cottage as she is now vulnerable to infection. We spent the first two nights in an apartment at the Olde Ship Inn and then secured 4 nights in a holiday house in South Street. This obviously involved significant additional expense on our part, not to mention the stress we experienced in trying to find alternative accommodation. Having just buried my Mother the Thursday before travelling to Seahouses, this holiday came just at the right time to relax and unwind, little did we know what awaited us. We are now in Keswick for a week and on our return home I will be in touch to take this matter further. Maurice Patterson

Lovely renovated cottage in a busy little town with lots of facilities.

The house is extremely well kitted out having more than enough kitchen equipment, two great shower rooms and plenty of space both upstairs and down. It would have been helpful to be told the key safe was at the back of the property and the front door wasn’t in use. Also some information about the house; which bins belonged to the property, when the bins were to be put out, which was the recycling bin and that some of the blinds were operated remotely would have been of assistance. There are two velux windows in the ceiling of the larger bedroom which do not have blinds meaning that the room was very bright at dawn. A bit of a challenge if you are a light sleeper. Ruth the owner was accessible and easy to get in touch with. Overall I would highly recommend a stay at Bramwell House, the points raised are far outweighed by the high standard of the renovation, amenities in the house and village plus the excellent situation, so close to Hadrian’s Wall etc

A beautiful, exceptionally stylish and well presented property in a great location in the centre of Corbridge.

However, it was lacking in some basic facilities which lets it down unfortunately. The only hanging space for clothes is in the second bedroom which makes it very awkward if two couples are staying. Even a few hooks in the en-suite bedroom would help. No mirror in the en-suite shower room which is tricky if you need to have a shave. True, there is one in the main bathroom but again, not ideal if juggling with other guests. The biggest issue we had was the lack of iron and ironing board. We had travelled up for a family celebration and discovered we couldn't iron anything on the morning of the event so my husband had to make an hour long round trip to his parents house to iron his clothes. Thank goodness we had that option! Such a shame as these are little things to remedy but have a big impact without them. If these were resolved we'd have no hesitation in going back as it really is a beautiful property aside from these niggles.
