Get away from it all with our Northumberland Holiday Cottages

Northumberland is England's northernmost county up by the Scottish Borders and is a must-visit holiday destination for fun, adventure, history, and outstanding natural beauty.

Book one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and you'll find yourself in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the countryside is wild and rugged and the heritage coastline is studded with beautiful hidden coves and sandy beaches.

With hundreds of beautiful Northumberland self-catering properties, Snaptrip is your one-stop shop to find the holiday home of your dreams. Whether you're travelling with friends, family, or your special someone, take a look through our wide selection of countryside and beachside cottages and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Why choose a Northumberland weekend break or staycation?

The county of Northumberland is one of the most sparsely populated locations in the UK, making it the ideal place to relax, unwind, and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Over a quarter of the county is made up of the Northumberland National Park, so if you're looking for a proper escape from the stresses of everyday life, you couldn't find a more perfect destination. From wide sandy beaches, pretty moorlands dotted with heather, roaring waterfalls, rolling hillsides, and ancient woodlands, there is plenty to explore.

The beaches in Northumberland are clean and pristine. Imagine white sand, glorious blue skies, and even bluer waters. Bamburgh Beach has got to be one of our favourites. Bamburgh is an idyllic coastal village with everything you could want from a small seaside town. The beach is exquisite for relaxing and playing, and the village is lovely for walking around. There's also the impressive Bamburgh Castle to explore if you fancy a break from the beach.

To experience the whole of Northumberland's epic coastline, join the Northumberland Coastal Path. The route is a whopping 62 miles long, and while it can take up to seven days to complete, it's well worth the amble. You'll see the beautiful coast, incredible beaches, and sweet fishing villages.

Northumberland is a historic county littered with remnants of its impressive past, such as Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed with their imposing fortresses, castles and monasteries.

There are more castles here than in any other county, 39 to be exact, and each one has its own character. These castles go back to the Norman times, built to defend the region from invaders. Some favourites include the majestic Alnwick (famed as the filming location for Hogwarts in Harry Potter) and Bamburgh castles, the haunting ruins of Warkworth, and the isolated Dunstanburgh Castle.

Speaking of history, Northumberland is the home of Hadrian's Walls. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the most famous frontier of the Roman Empire. The walls span 73 miles from coast to coast but are the most intact in Northumberland. The wall weaves up and down hills, and a walk along it offers the chance to see the remains of towers, turrets, and forts.

If you want to do something truly memorable, make sure you go stargazing during your visit. The incredibly low levels of light pollution make Northumberland an amazing place to see the stars in all their glory, especially if you stay in the designated dark sky area around Kielder. It's even possible to spot the Milky Way and identify planets from the observatory.

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a trip to Holy Island. This four-square-mile island can only be accessed at low tide. While you're there, visit the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle, perched high up on a volcanic rock. The island also has a small harbour, a nature reserve, a pretty village, and priory ruins.

We've only scratched the surface of things to do in this incredible county. To experience all there is to discover, stay in one of our Northumberland holiday cottages and plan an epic adventure.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Mrs Dransfield - Verified booking

The plus points first. Harbour Hideaway is in a fantastic location in Seahouses. Very handy for all the lovely local amenities. The convenient parking space is right outside the property. The decor is modern and the layout well thought out. For the size it is well equipped, the combined microwave is a larger model. We found the sofa bed to be comfortable and easy to convert from sofa to a bed. The views from the property are beautiful, with lovely walks along the coast. However, Harbour Hideaway is very small, once the sofa bed is made up, you can only just walk around it. The main space, not including the front door recess is app 2.3 metres, (less 40cm for the kitchen run, approx 1.9 metres) by 3.2 metres approx. There is a small recess for the front door. We found damp and high levels of humidity to be a problem and have provided the owner with photos. Thankfully we had lovely weather because it would be difficult drying wet coats, shoes and walking coats in such a confined space. There is very little storage space and we had to leave rucksacks, walking shoes and jackets in the car. All bedding and towels are provided but there were only two pillows, for two people. There is not room in the sofa bed storage for all the bedding, we had to leave a pillow out during the day. We stayed for five nights and found it a little challenging because of the lack of space and lack of storage.

The cottage is wonderful, spotlessly clean, well equipped and very spacious, the grounds around the property are fantastic for dogs who can have plenty of off lead time exploring the woods, fields and beautiful countryside as the cottage is set well away from the roads. The owners are lovely and friendly and animal lovers which is an added bonus for us. It was so thoughtful to have a selection of goodies available on arrival. The cottage is central to explore Northumberland and coast, we had a fabulous week and exploring Hadrians wall, nearby Belsay House, Tynemouth castle, Alnwick market, the beaches at Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle to name a few. There's some lovely farm shops, and ice cream parlours near by so you can sample the local produce., which is excellent. We book 5 o6 cottages a year and this is one of the best we have been to and there's so much I haven't fitted in so will definitely booking here again in 2025 can't wait.

We were so happy with our stay at The Byre. Val is a very welcoming and warm host. The cottage is in a stunning area and very peaceful. Once you step into the cottage you feel at home straight away. The kitchen is a fantastic size with plenty of workplace and well equipped. The lounge is very comfortable and has a woodburner. The bedrooms are roomy and comfy. The garden has ample space and has a lovely woodland walk which we enjoyed daily. We look forward to staying at The Byre again. Perfect host who has thought of everything and goes out of her way to make sure you have a very comfortable and peaceful stay. Chris and Ali

We were delighted with this pretty and unique accommodation and in the standard of it all.

It was warm, the bed with its beautiful bedding was SO comfy We slept like babies! We particularly liked the recently installed bath that has handles and a grab for the shower... Too many accommodation providers are installing trendy high sided baths that are not safe for so many visitors. Everything was gleaming clean. We liked the parking inside the gate and the pretty garden that was secure for our dog who enjoyed his daily walks nearby. The whole area has so much to offer with nearby coffee house and eateries... The owners are so welcoming and provided treats for both us and our dog so we have no hesitation in recommending!

This was a beautiful little gem and the perfect weekend escape.

It was cosy and and warm, the owners were close by for anything we needed and the surrounding space is perfect for dog walks right from your front door. I had read that there are some WiFi issues which didn’t concern us too much, but it did mean that watching any TV was challenging as it just wouldn’t stream properly. There were also a few bits that we didn’t bring as we’d assumed they might be at the cottage like shower gel, and milk but we were able to go out and get those and to be fair they had left a couple of small bottles of Prosecco and some dog treats for buddy. We’ll definitely be back.
