What our customers say about their holidays

    • Nick - Verified booking

It was a stunning location , peaceful and quiet.

The only downside was we felt that the kitchen could be better equipped with additional equipment which would have been useful during our stay. A pair of oven gloves instead of one small pad, a larger frying pan as the small one was a bit limiting when cooking for 4 adults. We could not find a hand towel to use in the kitchen as there was only one tea towel which we used for washing up. Perhaps some kitchen roll or a small roll of silver foil which could be left in between guests. Also it would help if there was a few basic essential left such as salt, and pepper and a small bottle of oil to help when cooking. Another small detail perhaps a hook in the bathroom to hang up a clothes ( Although I know you had a chair) but this was used for towels. The upstairs bedroom mezzanine was quirky and interesting , however it may be more to make that a twin room with beds positioned under the eaves either side of the room may be suitable may be more suitable for children who may no need the head room and leave the downstairs bedroom as a double. We make these comments with good intentions as we too are in the hospitality trade and understand the issues of meeting everyones needs. We must congratulate you on making a beautiful building / accommodation whilst respecting its history and heritage. As we have friends living in Scarborough nearby we may well return next year.Thank you both for making our stay relaxing ( despite the snow and storm Bert)

Generally the cottage gave us what we needed.

The location was perfect, close to facilities and walks for our dog and most of all quiet. Thankfully it was just my wife and I so when we found that the beds were small doubles, we took one each. We are used to sleeping in a super king at home so are used to having lots of space! The bathroom could do with a touch of paint around the sink as could the living area as there were quite a few scrapes on the wall. The kitchen was adequately equipped for our basic needs. Unfortunately the shower/ wet room sink had a constantly running tap that needs a new washer but that could easily be fixed. Also the extraction fan in that bathroom was not working either so when we arrived there was a smell of dampness in that room. The heating and hot water worked well and after a 6 hours journey, it was nice to walk in to somewhere warm and cozy. Key collection was easy with the key safe code being provided over the phone. Overall we would use the cottage again. The briefing pack was clear and it was obvious that lots of thought had gone into Covid and precautions with cleaning regimes in place. The village and surrounding area are very picturesque. I am familiar with the area having gone to school there many years ago but if other guests are staying, maybe some local information would be useful such as access to local walks etc. Wi-Fi was excellent so researching this was an option.

This was a fabulous holiday cottage which was well equipped and clean.

However, just a few things let it down. There was no mirror in the bedroom which had been adapted to be more accessible. The mirror in the accessible bathroom was set high on the wall above a toilet and cistern which made it difficult to look in and if you were in a wheelchair you wouldn’t be able to use it. I found the settee quite uncomfortable, despite using two pillows behind my back to give me support, as the back of the settee slopes a long way back. The parking for the three holiday holiday cottages could do to being longer for the size of today’s cars. Cutting two feet into the banking at the back of the parking area would greatly increase access. Parking was made more difficult because the entrance to the holiday cottage parking area was slightly blocked by a car belonging to the cottage at the entrance. Finally, one very minor point, the main door in the lounge area could not be fixed back in an open position to allow fresh air in - it kept blowing back and forth. Perhaps a hook could be fixed to the wall. I don’t understand one reviewer’s comment about the fridge - it was fine!

We visited The Old Workshop for our first family holiday - with 7 month old baby and our dog.

What a beautiful property in the most beautiful of settings. The Old Workshop was so tranquil. We felt like we were the only people in the world and aside from seeing the host family maybe three times in passing over 5 days, our only neighbours seemed to be fields of sheep (which our dog and daughter both loved from the safety of the bedroom window). The property itself was spotlessly clean and furnished to a very high standard, and the hot tub was a hit for us adults once the little one was asleep! The water pressure in the shower was incredible but the water could get a little warm so that’s one to watch for little people. On the little people point; there was a high chair, cutlery and crockery, stair gates, travel cot and linens for the cot so a lot of the stress of packing (and more importantly packing the car!) was taken away. Christine, our host, was fantastic and kindly acted as the North Yorkshire tourist board for us, which meant we discovered things we never would have on our own. We adored our stay and wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

This is our 2nd stay at Puffin Cottage, our last visit was 12 months ago.

We very much enjoyed our stay again and most things were the same. Luna our dog finds it a home from home. We very much appreciated the much larger replacement LG TV in the lounge. Great addition to the cottage! The salt stored in the utility room was very welcome for the back steps after the snow. We did find that the radiator in the bathroom was not working so we ended up leaving the door open so it was at least warm in there and put the damp towels over the other radiators. There are two ceiling lights in the bathroom. The light over the toilet flickers and is very dull and ideally needs replacing. We went to use the log burner. There were logs but no kindling or matches to get it going. We purchased both the next day and it was lovely having the burner going in the evening. Kindling and matches would be helpful for us novice log burner users. Please not I replaced the batteries in the central heating thermostat on the wall on the stairs as it showed they were depleted. You may need to make sure its set correctly. Thank you.
