    Holiday cottages in Bedale

Located in the district of Hambleton, North Yorkshire, the market town of Bedale is so well established that it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Featuring a harbour despite being some 70 miles from the nearest sea, it's also home to the only listed Leech House in the country.

Bedale has the atmosphere of a traditional Yorkshire town and St Gregory's, the town's 12th-century church, is acclaimed as one of Britain’s finest. The picture-perfect Georgian buildings lining the market are impressive and there's a tourist information centre nearby if you need any information on what to see. Wander Bedale's cobbled streets and browse its independent custom furniture stores, antique shops, and auction houses for shopping inspiration.

If you enjoy quality food and drink buff, holiday cottages in Bedale are the perfect base to sample the local delights. There's an award-winning butcher, along with locally produced Wensleydale cheese, beer microbreweries, and real dairy ice cream. At Snaptrip we offer thousands of properties so you're sure to find the right one, whether you're looking for a romantic weekend away or a home large enough for a family reunion. A great cottage BUT problem stairs!

The Dower House Cottage would be a great place for most people BUT for elderly/less mobile people, the staircase is a potential hazard. Currently the dog-legged staircase has an inadequate handrail. The handrail's profile is difficult to grip and, more importantly, it is not continuous and also ends well below the top step. It is to be regretted that the owner failed to include photos of the staircase, or describe it, in the details of the cottage. I would point out that I have drawn the attention the owner, Toby, to the problems and discussed how the situation could be improved. The cottage itself is extremely well furnished with everything you might want. It was beautifully clean on arrival with everything working. Plenty of parking for two cars and being able to charge my hybrid car was a useful feature not available at many properties. The cottage is in an attractive location, off the village green. Although the village does not have any shops, it does have a great pub - the Black Horse - which is only a few metres away - and we would recommend their food and beer! The village is in a lovely location and there are plenty of places within easy travel. We particularly liked Ripon and Studley Royal Water Gardens. Despite the stairs (and the unseasonal weather) we had a great week at the Dower House Cottage and - subject to the above warning re the stairs - we would strongly recommend it for anyone who wants a comfortable week, in a quiet village, in a lovely part of the country. Not recommended for anyone who needs internet access.

I was very disappointed the property was advertised with Broadband/Wi-Fi at best it was 2mb down and 0.1mb up and the 4g mobile signal was very patchy and intermittent. Unable to stream the sport from my accounts, emails were a struggle and even the simplest of google searches seemed to take forever. This spoilt the holiday, aside from missing my sport, I was unable to check up on emails and upload stuff back to the office, I had to waste hours during the day away from the cottage doing this via hotspots, when I should have been out and about enjoying the countryside. Part of the blame should fall with Sykes Cottages as they probably have a tick box for cottage owners, Does your property have Wi-Fi/Broadband? Yes/No. This should be amended to advertise the connection speed as i certainly would not have booked this cottage had I have known how primitive the internet connection was. That aside the cottage was clean and comfortable, quiet location but only 5 minutes from Bedale and close to the A1. Other niggles there was no egg lifter in the kitchen so difficult to turn food in the frying pan and impossible to remove a fried eggs. It may be because it was early in the season and they had not been opened since the autumn but upon opening the Velux windows in the bedrooms and washroom the rooms would fill with flies that were living around the seals in the windows, not pleasant, picking up dead and dopey flies and trying to shoo the flying ones out of the window.

The holiday cottage, owner and location were excellent.

My only negative comment to make is about the day I rang your (Sykes) office to check availability and price and to potentially book the property. It was available for my dates and I was expecting the price to be confirmed as described on the web site = £293. However I was told it was now £299 ! I queried this and was told it was because I was booking it on the phone. So now booking it on the phone costs £6.00 extra - that's a neat trick you don't mention when advising which buttons to press on the phone or as far as I can see on your website or terms and conditions either. I have booked on the phone with your company in the past without this extra cost being added - it used to be a simple thing to do without challenging the extras. You already take a booking fee and thats when I book online myself. I suggested to the agent that I might as well stop the call and go and book it online - for the advertised price. At that point she said she might be able to waive the £6.00 charge - so I agreed to continue with the £293 price. This activity sounds a bit underhand to me - I don't know (yet) of any other holiday company that charges extra for ringing up.... and hopefully in future you wont either.

Lovely property beautifully furnished, excellent facilities and a couple of steps from the local pub Just a couple of suggestions: A lock on the downstairs toilet would be useful as you can’t tell when it’s engaged The toilet seat in the twin room en suite needs re-fitting as its not fitted properly, worryingly someone pointed this out in the visitors book in September and it’s still not been addressed, so makes you think that feedback is not been listened too The shower head in the twin room en suite is too big for a small shower and if you’re not wanting to wash your hair you can’t avoid it None of these things detracted from our stay they are just observations we made during our stay, its a lovely cottage in a lovely village We enjoyed the local pub but felt the Sunday lunch was pricey and not worth the £20 main price tag

We found the Dower Cottage to be cosy and comfortable for our Christmas stay.

It is a great location for this area of Yorkshire, and the village has a great local pub for food (evenings only in winter) that's only twenty yards from the front door. The cottage was clean, warm, and the electric wood burner helped make it both warmer and cosy. We really appreciated the sweet touch of putting up a Christmas tree. For future visitors just note that the dvd player doesn't play blu-ray/ultra hd, the outdoor light is proximity triggered, and the top step in the cottage is steep so be careful with small children. There's lots of space indoors for games though, and we were very happy with our choice and would come back again.
