You'll fall in love with the village of Staithes, which is built right in the gap between two rugged cliffs and has the loveliest high street filled with boutiques and cafes. Knaresborough is a larger market town built along the River Nidd and boasts numerous historic landmarks, such as the remains of Knaresborough Castle.

The popular and historic seaside resort of Whitby falls within North Yorkshire and is well worth a visit, not least to stand in awe of the spectacular ruins of Whitby Abbey and enjoy a relaxing day on the coast. This is the town that inspired Bram Stoker to create his famous vampire novel, so watch out for vampires, as this is where Count Dracula landed!

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Janet - Verified booking

The cottage is a high quality renovation with tasteful, quality furnishings and decor.

The one criticism of the cottage itself is the lighting. Candle bulb candelabra style lights hung high in the high-pitched roof looks lovely but means lighting down at person height is very dingy. Very cosy and romantic if sitting watching TV etc - but totally impractical for reading, looking at maps etc. Anything really necessary has to be taken to under-wall-unit lights in kitchen area. They do nothing to boost daytime natural light on overcast mornings either. (I went home with my holiday book unread!) However, the biggest disappointment, from our personal point of view, was just how close the cottage is to the Flask Inn. The description says 2 minutes from pub and shop, which we felt should be okay - and possibly even useful. The shop was indeed approx 2mins walk but the rear entrance of pub was less than 15 seconds walk from the cottage door! Although we wouldn't have selected this property if we'd known, this wan't too much of an issue for most of the week, as long as we kept the front blinds permanently closed. However, our arrival weekend coincided with an annual motorcycle rally, that uses the Flask Inn as its base! From our arrival on Saturday afternoon until the small hours of Sunday morning there were dozens and dozens of motorbikes screaming up an down the main road , immediately the other side of the pub - and even some along the little lane between the front of Stable Cottage and the back of the pub! There was just a few hours respite, then they started again at 5am!!! The cottage was a good base for exploring a lovely area but we would not book it again. A cottage in a small village just back off the main road would have given us the peaceful retreat we'd so wanted, without compromising access to all the places we wanted to visit.

We spent a weekend at "The Stang Hideaway" in August, for a relaxing 3-night stay with my partner and our little dog.

The views were gorgeous, and the location was as peaceful as a library on a snowy day. But there were a few surprises that gave us a good laugh! First off, the wine cooler was ice-cold—unlike the fridge, which was warm enough to double as a sauna . If you’re planning to brew some coffee, don't forget to bring your own coffee pods; the same goes for dishwasher tablets as there was non available and the free washing up liquid was limited to a very small bottle (use sparingly). The "fully equipped" kitchen was a bit like a game of culinary hide-and-seek, with basic items playing hard to get. And if you’re using the breakfast bar or that “sumptuous” sofa, be prepared to get very close to your partner—like, "hope-you-really-love-each-other" close, perfect if your on a romantic break! Now, let’s talk Wi-Fi. Remember the days of dial-up internet? If you’re feeling nostalgic, you’re in luck—this Wi-Fi will take you right back to the 90s with its charmingly slow speeds which can cause the TV to frequently show the circle of death when it tries to catch up, perhaps it was intentional to create a romantic atmosphere. The outside decking is lovely, but it could use a gate to be truly dog-friendly. And don't be surprised if you step outside to find a crowd in the treehouse—it’s open to everyone on the park, so you might end up with an audience for your morning coffee or romantic sunset. All in all, it was clean and the tranquility was delightful, the stay didn’t quite match up to the price given there’s a lot of competition in the area. Here’s hoping for some improvements in the future, but hey, we still enjoyed the peace and quiet and lovely views!

      1. The cottage is south of Whitby not Whitby south of the cottage.

Please change the description and overview 2. The toilet seat needs changing for one that fits properly 3. The flagstones to the front door are mostly moss covered and need cleaning; they were slippery in the wet. 4. We had a powercut - there were plenty of candles but no matches. 5. The wooden chopping board is heavily cracked - needs a replacing with a better non-wooden unit. All of these have been reported to the owner/Grouse Farm reception. Other than that the holiday was fine albeit rather concerned that it was opposite a pub but this turned out to be a very quiet public house and restaurant. L shaped sofa is comfortable as is the king-size bed. Bath a bit awkward to get into - high sides; however, shower works well. Fridge a little on the small side even for two - but difficult to see what else could be fitted. Rest of Kitchen is good although no recycling bins provided. TV has freeview reception which is ok- it is not a smart TV but as the Wi-fi is quite good Amazon Fire or Chromecast can be plugged in the back for extra options. Plenty of parking space alongside cottage. NB you must visit Grouse Farm reception (not a quick walk) down the long approach road next door to get the key.

The hot tub made the house and was fabulous!

Excellent value for money. Site staff very friendly. Be aware if you are attracted to this property as it is a bungalow there are steps - particularly a step down into the kitchen. It was really cold when we arrived but warmed up quickly. Heating is very efficient. Shame there was no welcome box - not even a pint of milk, luckily (after our last experience.. where there wasn't even a tea bag in the property) we were prepared! Kitchen equipment is very basic and could do with more utensils - such as scissors, fruit bowl, more mugs. Beds all comfy and the dressing gowns are a nice touch and lovely quality towels. The ensuite bedroom / bathroom is very compact with a very narrow entrance. More furniture in bedrooms, such as a chair for clothing would be good plus a few homely touches. Some of the facilities need a bit of TLC, my son was certain the bathroom light switch would fall off, twin bedroom radiator doesn't work - sign on it and there is no head on the electric shower. Hooks on doors would be useful too and less harsh lighing.

Our stay at the property was plagued by a series of issues that turned what was meant to be a relaxing weekend into a stressful ordeal.

From the master bed lacking basic bedding to the curtain falling in one room, and the inadequate ventilation in the kitchen due to the hob's exhaust, it was clear that preparation was lacking. The most pressing problem arose with the electric shower in the main bathroom, which began leaking aggressively on the first night. Despite attempts to contact management, no assistance was provided until the next morning, when they could only disable the shower altogether. Promises of a plumber's arrival went unfulfilled, leaving us to improvise with cold water from a bucket and a kettle. The lack of hot water persisted throughout our stay, with repeated attempts to resolve the issue proving fruitless. Eventually, we were offered access to another facility, but it was too little, too late. The compensation and resolution provided by the owner were insufficient and failed to address the urgency of the situation. Overall, our experience was far from satisfactory, highlighting serious shortcomings in property management and guest satisfaction.
