What our customers say about their holidays

    • Steven - Verified booking

We were in Whitby for the folk week.

The cottage was ideally situated for the events of interest to us.Some people comment of issues with the stairs but we didn't have any problems even carrying instruments. Seen much worse in Whitby. The windows look out over a busy street but noise was not an issue. The Sykes listing is wrong in two key facts - access time is not 5pm. The cottage documents show earlier than this but it is too late to know after travelling. It would be good to get a text on the arrival day to say that the cottage is ready for us, Further, leave time is a more conventional 10am, not 9 per the website. We were nearly put off booking by the incorrect times. Secondly the listing refers to permit parking nearby so one thinks of the scratch cards but the cottage has a permit to use at West Cliff car park for the duration of the stay. The property has a very well appointed: kitchen which had all required appliances except perhaps a tea strainer. Cupboards full of more glasses, mugs and plates that you ever would need in an accommodation this size. Sink drainer stand not the right size for the crockery though. Furniture is looking a bit battered but comfy enough. There are no fewer than 3 tvs but we did not use having the folk week entertainment Bedrooms are a bit tight for space and we had to move the twin beds across to be able to open the wardrobes. The beds are OK. Access to the bathroom is down 2 steep steps and in the middle of the night one really needs a hand rail to navigate safely. Slippers recommended as the steps dig into bare feet. The walk in shower is good but the operation is very stiff. Although there is a warning in the handbook you haven't read that in the shower on arrival. Better still just sort it. Nice towels but no where to dry them. The radiators are too close to the wall to hang them on. Please provide a heated towel rail.

I didn't realise the whole apartment was basement level, but that's my fault for misreading the listing.

The two windows at either end of the kitchen/dining room/lounge, looked out onto brick walls. The floor felt gritty underfoot and there were cobwebs in the bathroom and bedroom. We had an issue with the car parking scratch card as we assumed it was for the week and it turned out only to be a 2 day parking card and we got a parking ticket. When we contacted the owner of the property, she said we should've had scratch cards to cover us for the whole week and she'd get the cleaner to drop one off for us the next day. In the meantime we had to pay for a day's parking out of our own pocket. Owner said she'd reimburse us for parking fine and the extra parking charge we had to pay and she has only just done this 3 weeks after we returned home. On the plus side, the bed was extremely comfortable and the apartment was nicely furnished. Always a bonus to have a dishwasher and washing machine too. Personally, I felt very claustrophobic being in a basement apartment with only 1 set of stairs as an exit.

Although the basement apartment is compact it had everything we needed.

Unfortunately, there was a family of approximately 5 adults and 4 children staying in the house above the apartment so it was very noisy esp. with footsteps as the house has wooden floors. The cleanliness seemed okay initially but on further inspection the skirting boards and around the back of the toilet were not clean and requires a thorough deep clean. There is no allocated parking however, parking permits were provided and we managed to park close by. The garden was a little overgrown and the furniture cushions are left out so they get wet. We had a great time in Whitby walking the coastal paths and were out most days. Sadly, I wouldn't stay here again owing to the house situated above.

We had a lovely break in West Cliff Apartment, it was exactly as it appears on the pictures and was spotlessly clean throughout.

The prosecco and biscuits left for us were a lovely touch too. Location wise the apartment was perfect, the seafront is less than 1 minute walk away and the town centre only a 5 minute walk. This was our first time in Whitby and we found lots to do and see, plus some excellent restaurants. The bedroom is compact but there was plenty of space in the living area where we kept our suitcases etc. The kitchen was really well equipped except the only couple of things we couldn't find were a bottle opener and a baking tray, which would have been handy. Overall we loved our stay and would highly recommend, thank you so much.

    • Caroline - Verified booking

      Lovely little apartment.

Cleanliness, equipment and location flawless. Major negative was the sole rainfall shower. For decent hygiene these should always be installed with a detachable hand held head; we are not all contortionists. As an added annoyance, both the pressure and the water temperature - not above 38C - had been throttled in the shower. Both were fine in the kitchen sink suggesting this was intentional. Other minor points; bedroom is very narrow so the wooden double bed end results in bruises and there is nowhere to hang towels while in bathroom. Sort these things and all would be perfect.
