What our customers say about their holidays

    • Ms Cowell - Verified booking

Lovely place. It's obvious a lot of thought and care has been put into into making it a really nice, comfortable place to stay which is also well set out so it felt really spacious for two with everything we needed and everything is really nice quality. We loved the log burner for a cosy stay over new year and the garden which was secure enough not to have to worry too much about our little dog escaping (she loved it too and the place worked really well with her!). Nice views and outdoor areas to sit out when it's a bit less wintry. Prosecco, biscuits and milk etc. was much appreciated! Wifi worked great too, bed was comfy and the shower was lovely. Short or long walks right from the gate and not far from lots of other gorgeous villages. We had short drives out to Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. There is a train station, pub and shop (though we didn't need to try the shop/pub) in the village too so it would be doable without a car if you were OK with walking a bit. We'd definitely stay again and recommend. The pet shop mentioned in the directions isn't obvious but if you search pet shops in Glaisdale on google maps it'll show the place and watch out for sat navs trying to take you down a little road through a farm that probably isn't passable if you're coming back in from trips out to the coast etc. There's a sign on the farm gate but it would be easy to miss, we just saw it in time - take the left fork back into Glaisdale instead!

The cottage was fine for one week for one person, and the location is great, but I think some expectation management is required. The first room you enter is the kitchen, and it's tiny. There's a dining table and 4 chairs, but it'd be a real squash to fit 4 people in there. Fortunately the lounge is bigger, and very pleasant. However, the 2 bedrooms and the bathroom are very, very small: there's hardly any space in the bathroom for one person's toiletries etc, let alone four. The double bedroom contains a bed and a set of drawers (plus a separate cupboard), but has very little space apart from this. All in all, the cottage is fine for 2 people, but 4 would probably not want to stay for longer than a weekend (unless the weather was so fantastic that you could spend lots of time in the garden). The directions could be a bit more helpful too: entering the postcode into Google Maps will get you close, but then it suggests you should turn left off the road from Glaisdale (don't!). Look out for Hollins Farm on your left, then the next building on your right shortly afterwards is the cottage, set back from the road and slightly elevated too.

Had a wonderful week at The Old Cow Byre. Snow, ice and the cold weather could not possibly detract from what was a fabulous week. I love the area anyway but this place is something else. I would very happily sell up and live there. Elaine and Gordon have created a real home from home and should be very proud of what they have achieved. The location is brilliant. Not far from anywhere but far enough to feel like you have got away from it all. Surrounded by the glorious Yorkshire countryside, plenty of wildlife to keep you company and an immaculate country cottage to call home for a week or two. The coast is close by, as are many picturesque villages and Hamlets on the moors. I shall take great pleasure in recommending The Old Cow Byre and also returning myself. I have stayed in many places over the years and this is in the top 1%. 5 stars.

    • Mrs Kenyon - Verified booking

The cottage is situated in a fairly remote, very quiet area with beautiful surroundings. The living room is a good size but the rest of the cottage is extremely small) It is within easy driving distance of the major tourist spots, some of the drives are a little challenging but very scenic. I would suggest the cottage is suitable for 2 adults only (max 3 if one wishes to sleep in a bunk bed) and not children due to the stairs and general size, and not suitable for those with mobility issues for the same reason and the very steep slope that needs to be walked up from the parking place. There were a lot of cobwebs and facilities are adequate but basic. A suitable base for travelling for days out. Dogs liked the enclosed garden although it was smaller than it looked in the listing.

    • Mrs Todd - Verified booking

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in the cottage. It was spacious, comfortable and very well appointed. Situated in a little hamlet, nestled in the dip of the moors it provided a perfect venue to see lots of wildlife. We watched a barn owl flying and catching prey on 5 of the evenings, saw a stoat, bat and rabbits. A short walk took you to the top of the dip where we saw lapwings with a chick, heard curlews and lots of other birds. you could see Fylingdales and across the moors. The nearby village of Lealhom was worth a visit with free parking, good beer at the Board Inn, a well stocked village shop and 2 cafes. The cottage was convenient for visiting Whitby, Sandsend, Saltburn by the Sea and along the coast. A highly recommended cottage!
