What our customers say about their holidays

    • Alison - Verified booking

This was possibly one of our best holidays ever.

My partner and I have fallen in love with the Yorkshire Dales. The 17th century cottage is right in the heart of the countryside, Bank Newton being a tiny hamlet? and the nearest village being Gargrave. It was so peaceful and relaxing. The cottage itself is beautiful and in keeping with a property of that period. I loved the little garden with the arch and the roses, leading straight onto a field of cows. It was lovely to wake up in the morning, open the windows and hear cows and sheep. The bedroom and the living room were so cosy - impossible not to relax here. The kitchen and the bathroom had everything conceivable that one could need. There is a very good farm shop called Keelan that sold fresh, local produce nearby. We did a lot of walking on this holiday, there was always a sense of space, we rarely bumped into anyone. This part of Yorkshire remains unspoiled. I would thoroughly recommend staying at this cottage. The owner was so thoughtful and concerned that we should enjoy our stay. We are already thinking about whether it would be possible to book the same holiday again this time next year.

We booked last minute and were fortunate to secure 5 nights in October.

The Cottage was wonderful, warm and extremely well equipped. I would imagine that the cottage would be the perfect spot to locate any time of the year. It is a couple of miles from Gargrave in a hamlet called Bank Newton. Catherine lived close and was a great source of knowledge for local walks as well as walks further afield. The cottage is a stone's throw from the Liverpool-Leeds Canal which has pretty walks in both directions. Airedale, Wharfedale, Bolton Abbey, Grassington, Kettlewell, Malham, Settle, Kettlewell, and numerous other Dales Beauty spots (to say nothing of Tearooms) are nearby. The George at Hubberholme is to be recommended, terrific food, local beer and a genial Mine Host. Buckden, stop off at the George for lunch, Scar House, Cray and back down to Buckden is a lovely walk. Back to the Cottage for tea and some of Catherine's super cake...............what's not to like! We loved our stay and will certainly stay there next time we are having a short break in the area.

Both Roger and Hillary were very friendly and helpful each time we spoke to them Roger met us as soon as we arrived and he helped carry our bags in befire showing us around, explaining where everything was and how to operate the boiler and log burning stove etc. The beds were very comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed and the upstairs lounge was so toasty and warm we didn't need to use the log burner. The property is well decorated and maintained and we had no complaints at all about our stay. Roger also went though the various recommended pubs and eating places in the information folder they provide. Certainly the 3 pubs in Middleham we went to were excellent (Black Bull doesn't do food but has very nice beer). The food and beer in both the Richard III and The Dante was very nice indeed, and the staff in all 3 places were very friendly and welcoming. The local village shop is ideally located and open from early till late most days and the Chip Shop has excellent reviews but we didn't get a chance to try them.

Pros: Spacious with a good sized garden.

Plenty of parking. Comfortable bed. Lovely area ideal for visiting York, Selby and Leeds. Cons: Unable to control the heating which meant it was cold when you needed it. Small fan heater was insufficient for the six of room.It needed a warning advising that the water was very hot. It could not be turned down in the shower and there was a danger of getting burnt. The washing machine rubber was dirty and covered in mildew. We tried to clean it but ended up taking laundry to my son's. On top of that the seating was the most uncomfortable we have ever known. My wife has a back problem and was in agony for most of our stay. The WiFi was weak and disappeared all together when other properties were occupied. Reading the comments book it appears that many if these complaints had been raised previously without any action being taken. A shame as it could have been an amazing stay.

Great little property; lovely garden and private parking, all secure!

Accommodation was well equipped and heating and hot water in abundance! Clean and tidy... milk left in fridge (very handy) with tea and coffee etc. Only a few little issues, hence the 4*....sofa was like sitting on plank of wood, uncomfortable... although chair was comfy.... shower did not drain too well, needed mop and bucket to mop floor after every shower and slight smell from drains and gurgling from sink, thought it was external drain but that looked OK... fridge can be a little noisy being open plan! All in all great little place and well situated for air museum and Selby. Great place for fur baby, having secure and well kept garden. Could quite easily stay again!! Oh... and there is a hairdryer!!
