    Self-catering holidays in Dorset

There are many words you can use to describe the majesty of Dorset - scenic, picturesque, utterly beautiful. When thinking of Dorset's rolling hills, craggy cliffs and secret coastline swimming pools, one word springs to mind, and that's 'unspoilt'.

Dorset is how the English countryside is meant to look. Its days are filled with sunshine, dancing across the top of cobblestones. Its nights are made of the clearest skies, fresh air and the sound of nocturnal birds. Dorset is a family holiday destination in a picture postcard image of England and a place you can never visit just once.

We want your holidays in Dorset to be as perfect as possible. Whether it's for a short break or a month-long getaway, whatever type of holiday home you're craving, we'll do our best to make it happen. Our selection of cottages in Dorset offers a range of options to suit your needs, from cosy one-bedroom cottages to spacious properties that can accommodate larger groups. Whether you're looking to explore the county's rich cultural heritage, with its historic sites and museums, have a laugh at a comedy club, or simply relax on one of its many beaches, our cottages provide the perfect base for your stay.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lisa - Verified booking

The Cottage met expectations - was really beautiful, furnished to a great standard and only 10 mins walk to beach, fabulous beach cafe and lovely views and walk above the beach.

Village is extremely limited for anything else with only a small post office and a garage offering very limited food items.. The 2 pubs were fully booked when we tried. Location of exit gate from the property onto a bend immediately onto a busy road (no pavement) was of concern for us with a daughter and dog and traffic was noisy; although not a problem if you're an early riser and late going to bed. Whilst generally clean, we found a couple of items of the previous occupant in the lounge and bedroom (including their booking details from the previous week!) There was also a very large coffee spillage on the counter and some dust 'clumps' which left us questioning the standard the Cottage had been cleaned to and so ended up using anticbac cleaner on all high touch items ourselves. Property was advertised at 7 nights at a given price. We took a late booking and due to the changeover date could only possibly be offered 5 nights but were still to be charged for 7 - this was the Sykes sales guy (not property owner) as we later received a small discount on speaking to a different sales person who confirmed this was possible. Dogs are extra (not stated on site but only small charge) We found the first Sykes guy quite abrupt but both ladies we later spoke to were fabulous, polite, friendly and keen to be helpful. Dorset is beautiful. Roads make for an easy drive out to other areas. Lovely coastal drive. Use the park and ride if you go into Lyme Regis as it was impossible to park.

      Firstly we loved Lyme Regis.

However finding the property and key safe situation was a different story. We were not told until we had paid the full price of the holiday about the keysafe situation. We have used Sykes Cottages before and after payment we have been given instructions and the owners number which gives us as seniors peace of mind incase of any problems or difficulties. Your previous properties have been perfect no problems at all and even a welcome pack to greet you not here sadly. The garden isn’t inviting as it looks in the photographs. We were looking forward to using the deckchairs but they were in a poor state tucked up the side of the building. In fact all the garden furniture was in a poor state and it was a lot of money to us what we paid to be disappointed like this. It’s supposed to have a washing machine but it hasn’t that shouldn’t be stated. Yes it states the steps to the bathroom are step but that is a bit of an understatement for health and safety reasons there should be a rail put there. The extraction fan was making terrible noises so we were nervous to use it so refrained and that wasn’t ideal as there is no window in the said bathroom. We didn’t stay the whole term of the holiday we had to return home the bed was so uncomfortable we were suffering with terrible backache. Luckily it was very warm so didn’t require to use the duvet so layed that on the mattress to try and make it a bit more comfortable.

A lovely, cosy little cottage, very clean and welcoming.

In the write up about the cottage it quotes - Settle down at the dining table ready to tuck in, or venture out to the enclosed garden and base yourself amongst the shrubbery as you toast to a memorable retreat; treat yourself to a long soak or warm shower as the dishwasher takes care of your dirty dishes, and spend some extra time completing your skincare routine before winding down in the lovely double bedroom. Although no dishwasher was listed in the kitchen equipment we were further teased to have 2 x dishwasher tablets put out for us! We never did find the dishwasher. Problems with the TV only managed to get BBC iplayer, we don’t go on holiday to watch TV but couldn’t get the other channels quoted in the cottage handbook. Internet was slow or non existent at times but appreciate this maybe the location. Would recommend and the little outside patio is a real sun trap and quiet.

Lilac cottage is beautifully furnished & well equipped.

We understood & appreciated the 5pm check in, to allow for a "deep clean" however the level of cleanliness was certainly not a "deep clean!" There were cobwebs everywhere, stains on the living room rug, thick layers of dust on the TV and dust/crumbs on the kitchen floor. We were also not made aware of the shared access, to the adjoining cottage, making us unable to leave the door open for our dogs to play in the garden for fear that our neighbours may come through & leave the main gate open! We also feel that the cottage description should highlight how busy the main road is, we could not have the front windows open because of the noise & getting out of the gate with 2 dogs, directly onto a very busy main road was horrendous! I notice this was addressed in the "notes" but it really needs to be made much clearer.

A pleasant stay marred by a few problems.

Overall the property was clean and comfortable and the garden was lovely. The main bedroom is large and comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped, though there are insufficieint work surfaces on which to prepare food. It is not made clear that the ceilings are quite low and, at 6'5" I banged my head a few times, particularly when coming down the stairs and while the fact that the main gate opens directly onto the road is mentioned, what isn't mentioned is that the road is extremely busy and cars pass very close, many well in excess of the 30mph speed limit. Faults noted: The kitchen window onto the road does not close properly, neither does the door to the double bedroom. The television is quite old and frequently loses its signal. There is a lot of out of date food in one of the cupboards.

    Frequent questions

    • What is the best base for exploring Dorset?

The town of Dorchester is often considered the best base for exploring Dorset. From there, you can easily visit the Jurassic Coast, including popular spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, as well as historical sites such as Maiden Castle and Thomas Hardy's Cottage. • Do you need a car in Dorset?

While having a car can be beneficial for exploring the wider areas of Dorset, it is not always necessary, especially if you plan to stay in more central locations or focus on specific attractions. Dorset has a well-connected public transportation system, including buses and trains, which can be used to access many popular destinations. However, if you wish to venture off the beaten path or explore the countryside extensively, having a car can offer more flexibility and convenience.
