Berwick upon Tweed
The gorgeous town of Berwick-upon-Tweed straddles the border between England and Scotland. Located just two and a half miles from the current Scottish border, Berwick-upon-Tweed has changed its allegiance thirteen times over the centuries. Having been fiercely fought over due to its strategic importance, the town eventually fell to the English in 1482, when a great wall was built around the town to prevent the Scots from invading. Berwick-upon-Tweed is therefore a fantastic option for those looking to take in some UK history on their last minute cottage holiday.
