What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sue - Verified booking

‘This house is all about location, and a “vintage feel”.

It’s not the most luxurious, not “posh” - but it does feel like a proper home. And I liked that. So did my family. The kids adored it! I will definitely come back, despite the two biggest negatives - the awful parking situation, and the lack of supplied bedding. The good things: Location, views, (fabulous), feels like a real home! Cosy. Nice! The proximity to beach, and pub - perfect! The garden, big. Kids loved it! The overall layout. A really lovely house for a holiday. Got some nice traditional features. Family friendly. Well equipped. Loved the kitchen especially. Loved the games for the kids, the bats and balls, the “fun” and “homely” feel. Fabulous living spaces. Super main lounge. But also the cute tv room. Great utility room. Huge. All beds very comfortable. Gray mattresses. Perfectly clean beds. Extra blankets everywhere. Good idea! Side lights in bedrooms - good! All carpeted rooms - upstairs and down - very clean and nice. Showers/bathrooms upstairs practical, and clean. The main bathroom had the most stunning views. The two double bedrooms had stunning views’. Not so good things: Parking a nuisance (I am using crutches at the moment). The arrangement is no use for anyone with a disability. Tristram car park is beautiful.. but you have to walk a short way up a very steep hill. Fine is you are fit and well, of course! Offloading and loading all my stuff took quite a long time - even using the little parking space for the Tubestsation cafe (which is next to the front garden). The fact I had to rent bedding etc - and make up all the beds myself. A complete PAIN! And an extra £200 (with towels). Why is this? Some of the house needs tlc - redecorating. Especially the downstairs shower room. The utility room was a bit “lived in” too! But I didn’t mind that. More waste bins are needed - in all the bathrooms and in the bedrooms too. There was only one upstairs, and one in the downstairs loo/shower room. Nicer lighting in the lounge needed. It was very dreary! Half the light bulbs were missing too. Why not have a couple of standard lamps in there? Please leave out the recycling bags? There were none for me to use, so I had to use my own bin liners. Just as well I brought lots! Please leave out instructions for the central heating adjustments? Please have some wood left out, in the lounge, ready for the wood burning stove? Outside patio furniture needs some tic! Better quality duvets would have been nice? I was quite cold at night. (When the heating went off.. and I didn’t know how to put it back on again).’

We accessed the property about 40 mins after the time we were supposed to as the cleaners were still there.

I thought this might be a good thing as it would ensure it would be nice and clean. There had clearly been a guest with a pet and there was animal hair EVERYWHERE. We stayed for 2 weeks and swept daily and the hair was still coming up. That was disappointing. The stairway the way you enter the property is the first impression of the house. The carpet is very worn and dirty - I don't think it reflects the rest of the property at all and must admit, I was a little concerned until I got upstairs to the main living area and saw how nice it was. I would recommend the owners consider an investment to improve. The chairs at the table were very cheap and the back legs were damaged on many of them - splayed out, giving a very unsteady feeling when sitting at the table. There were fairy lights on the balcony which did not work - they are very old and rusted and seem like they haven't worked for some time - consider removing ? The communal area at the property is clearly not maintained by anyone. It's hugely overgrown with weeds which block the walkways through to various properties. We had to break down 2 enormous weeds to get through to the Beach Hut - that seems a shame given the properties that are holiday lets are clearly fully booked. Consider a small investment to have that area maintained ? On a more positive note - we had a broken blind which was reported and fixed within 24 hours. We also had a broken catch on the oven door which was also reported and fixed while we were there. I found all John Bray staff to be pleasant, helpful and professional in my interactions.

The cottage is in an absolutely fabulous location, with amazing views, is well equipped and we loved our stay.

The bag of goodies on arrival was a really nice touch. Just a few minor things, which didn't affect our holiday, but as feedback has been asked for I thought worth mentioning. Quite a few of the light bulbs had blown - I found a box of bulbs in one of the cupboards so replaced them no problem, but was surprised this wasn't checked by the letting agent. Cleaning was so, so (in particular the smeary glass kitchen cupboards and shower) - we stayed at the very beginning of easter, and it looked like the house hadn't been given the once over prior to arrival. Again minor point, which is maybe the agents fault? There were also inconsistent house instructions; we were sent some info by the agent, and there were 2 files in the house, with differing info eg on bin days (I braved the storms on Monday night as one file said bin collection was Tuesday, only to find it was actually on Friday). Doesn't take much to check that kind of thing, which again is surely the agents responsibility? And probably doing itself disservice not to show photos of the games room in the garage (which is fab) and to promote the lovely welcome food bag. So positives: fab cottage, amazing location, would definitely want to stay again, the online info doesn't do it justice! Negatives: would benefit from more attention to detail in terms of cleaning, and consistent correct cottage information would add to the overall experience. Maybe is it because it's under Sykes management?

We've been staying at the White House for quite a few years.

We loved it before the transformation, but now it is even better - a fantastic house with stupendous views, lovely garden and proximity to the beach - that can accommodate our whole family in comfort. It's a really well equipped house too - the kitchen has everything you need for cooking (once you've mastered the ovens! - personally, I miss the old Aga), and plenty of space to prepare food for a big family with widely ranging requirements ranging from bottles and mush for babes in arms, endless bacon butties for hungry surfers, supper for 12 - sometimes these activities are all happening at once! And it's a very comfortable house - lovely big squashy sofas and plenty of room for small children to play with Duplo or make big jigsaws all over the floor. And we absolutely adore the barbecue area. A couple of years ago I wrote in the visitors' book that I thought the cleaners had let the side down a bit. This is no longer the case - the house was spick and span with a lovely clean fridge and sparkling bathrooms. So thank you for listening to that comment. And when something did go wrong - as with the lack of hot water - it was very speedily remedied following a call to your emergency number. Please pass our thanks on to the owners for providing such a lovely house. And thank you too to the John Bray team .
