What our customers say about their holidays

We stayed at Dormouse cottage during the Feb half term.

Here are our comments: Good points: Able to get into the property easily, and actually got an email the day before saying it had already been cleaned so we could arrive whatever time we wanted. Beds all very clean and comfy, we all slept brilliantly Cute, traditional cottage, with many features you would expect (this properly has steep stairs and low beams as you would expect a cottage to have) Bathroom clean with a brand new seal on shower screen, so no leaks when using the shower Fully enclosed rear garden to let our dog out into, this was great Good TV that worked well, and really good wifi even with multiple devices connected Microwave, fridge, cooker and other kitchen appliances all clean and worked fine. Warm and easy to heat to the temperature you want Arrived to a bottle of wine, tea and coffee making things and pre packeted biscuits waiting for us, this was a lovely touch! Not so good points: Other than the basics you would expect some areas of the cottage needed a good clean. I think this isn’t helped by all the decorative items around the cottage. I went prepared and wiped round with detox wipes. The sofa wasn’t great and was covered in dog hair. We spent about 20 minutes hoovering this. It did have a lot of scatter cushions and blankets on it so we removed these and didn’t put them back on then gave it a good hoover. The front door was quite stiff and needed a good pull / push to make sure it was shut properly. Others have commented on the noise from the windows, we didn’t really notice this too much and it definitely wasn’t an issue for us. Overall we had a great stay. It was comfy, we slept well and could easily sort food etc. The location is also great with plenty of things to do in and around the village. Plus our 7 year old son also really enjoyed it and slept well. Since returning the owner of the cottage contacted us for feedback and was genuinely interested in what we had to say and how he can make improvements. Again, Another great touch! Thanks for a lovely stay, we are booking for a return visit later in the year!

      Very disappointing and dirty cottage.

It needs a huge amount of work done to it - painting, new windows etc… Generally in need of a thorough deep clean. There were cobwebs everywhere, the house smelled awful when we arrived but realised this is because of the hoover - which stank to high heaven when you used it. The carpet is filthy and stained. Windows looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for over 6 months. Some windows are rotten. The towels were stained with yellow marks. Behind the bed was disgusting! It’s not at all like the photos on Sykes or Dream Cottages website- the sofa is grey and grubby - not cream, the table is too big for the cottage and not white. It is very poorly stocked - the only saving grace was that we ate out every night. There were no cleaning products apart from washing up liquid and multi surface cleaner - so had to use that to clean the bathroom and mop the floor before we left. Don’t know why we were provided with dishwasher tablets as there’s no dishwasher and I certainly wouldn’t wash my clothes with dishwasher tablets. Also situated on a very busy, noisy road - don’t think that you will enjoy a peaceful breakfast outside as trucks and cats rush past! A very overpriced and underwhelming cottage. We contacted Sykes about a few things and they did offer to get a cleaner in on the Thursday - we said it wasn’t worth it but hoped that the cottage would be cleaned properly for the next guests. They also provided us with a clothes airer (as we’d had to drape washing over shower screens, radiators etc…) and a new cafetière on the Thursday. I do feel they need to update their photos and description of the property as it is definitely NOT the way it appears on their site. However, Burton Bradstock is a beautiful village with fabulous walks and places to eat - just don’t stay in this cottage!

The week just spent here was a family 'get-together' to celebrate our Golden Wedding.

Generally, we enjoyed a very pleasant week in Dorset, in this spacious property which catered extremely well for the needs of our group. It afforded privacy when needed (particularly for one member who had to work digitally 'from home' throughout the week). The property was spotlessly clean and internally, in excellent decorative order. Having three bath/ shower rooms was a real bonus as was the ample off-road parking. The beds were extremely comfortable. Skylark is beautifully located in a quiet residential close but with a feeling of peaceful solitude once through the gates. The views of hills from both back and front and of the sea to the south were lovely and the little white gate was frequently used to access some stunningly scenic walks (and runs) in the hills or when heading down to the Kings Arms or farm shop. One or two minor grumbles... On arrival, we had to play a game of 'hunt the key safe'. Fortunately, it was eventually located without the need to call the given phone number but a bit of guidance in the pre-visit email would have been helpful. A folding clothes airer would have been a useful addition as it could have been placed inconspicuously outside for helping to dry damp towels etc. Mindful of the £100 penalty for incorrect recycling, we were slightly annoyed to discover the previous 'residents' had left a selection of non-recyclable items in the green-topped bin which, in order to avoid being penalised for the sins of the previous guests, necessitated the rather unpleasant task of us having to re-sort the contents into the correct bin. It was felt that one or two bits of guidance in the welcome pack were due an update. Generally though, a lovely property which we would be happy to recommend to others.

Thimble Cottage is a wonderful little place for a getaway.

Easy to get to and the sat nav takes you right to the door. The whole property looks bright and fresh and the lovely big garden and outside areas are 100% secure for your dogs. Even the most accomplished 4 legged escape artist would have to go some to get out. We had a Great Dane and a Chocolate Labrador and they loved the freedom to be able to wander around and bask in the sun. There a nice welcome pack for both your dogs and yourselves and this was a nice touch. The kitchen has everything that you could wish for and it’s unlikely that you’ll find yourself wanting for any utensil, pan or crockery. Dishwasher and washing machine both have tablets and capsules to suit the length of the stay. It has a smart TV with more than enough channels to keep you entertained. WiFi is good and allows communication to the rest of the world. (The mobile phone signal in a great deal of the surrounding area is a bit patchy.) The property sits just off the road through the village, but you do not get disturbed by what little traffic comes through. It’s in a great location to explore the local area and 30-40 minutes gets you to an abundance of sights. Would thoroughly recommend Thimble Cottage for your next getaway. Parking for one large car and an EV charging point if required.

The kitchen is well equipped and with the three bathrooms there were plenty of facilities for eight of us (6 adults and 2 children) The garden allows plenty of space for safe play although it is rather untamed.

Highly recommend the pub down the road, take a torch if returning in the dark. Although we generally enjoyed our stay the following issues need a mention: 1. It was not easy to locate and operate the key safe and we were jolly glad it wasn't raining given that it took about 10 minutes. On leaving we couldn't operate the safe and put the keys through the letter box. 2. E V. (Electric Vehicle charging) was a major reason we chose 'Skylark' and it proved to be a pair of 13 amp sockets without an adaptor lead. We travel with a charging lead but not an adaptor lead since we have have a charging socket at home. The person I contacted said he didn't have an EV and didn't know anything about them and had installed the sockets. This was a disappointment and frustration. At least insert a note for people to bring the necessary charging adaptor in the information. 3 The wardrobes had a rather musty aroma which penetrated clothes hanging in them. Keep your clothes in your suitcase if you can. 4. The en-suite wet room shower made most of the floor wet and would benefit from having an enclosure. 5. The television, as mentioned in other reviews, is unique and not intuitive!

    Frequent questions

    • What is the best base for exploring Dorset?

The town of Dorchester is often considered the best base for exploring Dorset. From there, you can easily visit the Jurassic Coast, including popular spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, as well as historical sites such as Maiden Castle and Thomas Hardy's Cottage. Dorchester itself has a rich history and offers amenities, accommodation options, and transport connections that make it an ideal base for exploring the diverse beauty of Dorset.

    • Is Dorset a good holiday destination?

From the stunning Jurassic Coast with its picturesque beaches and iconic landmarks like Durdle Door, to charming towns and villages, historical sites, and beautiful countryside, Dorset is well worth a visit. Whether you're interested in coastal walks, exploring historical landmarks, indulging in local cuisine, or simply relaxing in a tranquil setting, Dorset has something for everyone.

    • Do you need a car in Dorset?

While having a car can be beneficial for exploring the wider areas of Dorset, it is not always necessary, especially if you plan to stay in more central locations or focus on specific attractions. Dorset has a well-connected public transportation system, including buses and trains, which can be used to access many popular destinations. However, if you wish to venture off the beaten path or explore the countryside extensively, having a car can offer more flexibility and convenience.
