It was easy to get keys and leave keys via key lock.
It was quiet with no noise from neighbours through wall and not much in garden. There was a small well equipped galley kitchen. The dining area has a large table which makes it a bit cramped unless move furniture around. The two leather sofas were a bit soft for our tastes. Gas central heating but not used since went in height of summer. Two electric showers but we only used the one over the bath which was very good. Bathroom light not working and reported at end of stay in book. There was a children's play ground around corner within 1 minute walking and an open grass area called a community orchard (behind or west of Arkle Court) â accessed via a footpath at top right hand branch of Arkle Court. Shopping easy; M&S and Sainsbury within 1-2 minute drive in the direction of the access to A1; Co-op and fish & chip shop in direction of Alnwick town centre. Walk to Barter Books and town centre in 15-20 minutes. Easy access to coast with lots of possibilities and quiet in July. Can recommend Craster or Dunstan Sands for walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. Beadnell has hire of water sports equipment, and beach walk from Amble to Low Hauxley/ Druridge beach.

This is a nice house very well situated and comfortable.
..if a little tired in parts...by that we that mean the sofa cushions are flat and haven't been washed for some time...Also the dining chair covers needed washing...The oven tray was rusty and unusable as was the wok...they both need replacing...There were absolutely no instrucions inside or out regarding recycling and waste so we ended up bringing ours home and sorting it out which was a bit of a pain...These are just minor criticisms as the good far outweighs the bad in this house...We would definitely stay here again... Alnwick is a lovely town and the castle is spectacular...Another plus was the M&S food store and Turnbulls food store both within walking distance...Northumberland is absolutely beautiful and the people are very friendly...Nice lady next door. One piece of advice do purchase a National Trust membership if wanting to visit castles, stately homes and gardens and/or English Heritage.

We loved this holiday.
Booking with Sykes was really easy, communication with Alison was great and The Old Sweet Shop is very comfortable - huge yet cosy and welcoming. Lots of space to spread out in and the selection of board games was brilliant. Street parking was easy, we parked in the lane behind the house with no problems. The welcome basket was such a lovey touch and the two local shops are so handy. The August evenings were surprisingly chilly so we thoroughly enjoyed the stove in the lounge (entirely unnecessary, the heating was great but there is a special comfort in a real fire). Alnwick is a lovely place to visit, so much to see and do within walking distance and then the beach and countryside are really close. We didn't use it but the hop on/off local attractions bus seemed like a great idea, especially if you're not used to the hills. Our family are planning their return visit!

This was a great house for a group of friends.
We were on a cycling weekend and there are lots of routes from Alnwick into beautiful surroundings places. The house is so roomy and we loved the comfy living room and separate dining room with huge table. The owner warned us about the water pressure not being great on the top floor but there are two other showers that work perfectly and an enormous bath on the top floor. The mattress on one of the double beds was a little thin and not as comfortable as the other beds ( all the others were great) . We had a wonderful stay at the old sweet shop and would definitely book again. We felt a little chased out by cleaners on Monday morning. They parked up in the alley as we were packing at 9.30. We were not due out until 10. They were knocking on the door bang on 10. We were done but felt a little hassled. This did not spoil our stay in this fabulous house. We really enjoyed it.

Couple of things marred the experience, {something I have not experienced before with Sykes}.
Firstly I was advised that adjacent building work would be completed by end of February, Wrong ! it was still in full flow all week with various vans plus a JCB back and forth and mud spattered all over my car. Secondly the Retreat is not covered by wifi "NFWIFI" but as I eventually discovered 3 days later it was "NFPOOL"! supposedly the link for studios and apartments only. Ms Nicola Snaith was not in her office to seek assistance on the three times I called between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. but then her office seemed to be a store for odd pieces of building materials. Finally I now note that you are operating a 30% discount due to the ongoing building work , something I would have preferred to receive .Net result is that I'm not a happy customer and as a regular customer I would expect some form of financial recompense.
