What our customers say about their holidays

    • Valerie - Verified booking

The photos are misleading as this cottage is a lot smaller than it appears.

The large windows in the main living area don't open, so there's no ventilation or air flow, making it stuffy and unpleasant in hot weather. It's also dangerous as if there was a fire in the kitchen, there's no way to escape without going through it. The shower overshoots the tiny shower screen, so water sprays over the side and soaks the bathmat and floor. The oversized grab rail also means you can only get under the shower sideways. Water pressure is good, which means lots of water on the floor. Temperature control is variable, so it's just as well it's hard to get under it. The bath wasn't draining, which added to the unpleasantness. The biggest issue that we had, however, was that the kitchen was dirty. Surfaces, dishes, and utensils needed a thorough clean when we arrived and this unfortunately led us to question the cleanliness of the entire place. It was also poorly appointed in the kitchen, making it virtually impossible to actually self cater. There was only one tiny pan that couldn't even poach two eggs at the same time. Overall it was such an unpleasant experience that we abandoned our holiday and left after two days.

Lovely property in a great location so handy for the centre of Ambleside and with a car park pass so you could safely park your car in the large car park a couple of minutes from the property.

The road the property is on is very narrow and double yellow lined so it is slightly problematic when arriving with luggage. The road is also very noisy on occasion. Right opposite a pub and the dustbin wagon woke us very early one morning. There was a big problem with the main TV in the lounge which was described as a Sky/Smart TV meaning you could watch on demand services. We noticed very quickly that there were no streaming capabilities but the very helpful housekeeper had her husband visit us on the Saturday morning to attempt to resolve it when it was discovered that not only was it not a Smart TV, it neither had any of the Sky functionality either due to the owner's account issues with Sky. In fairness, the father of the owner did try and resolve the issues but it went from getting a new TV on day 2 to finally getting a Roku streaming stick on day 4. The facilities at the property were very good - no microwave but a double oven, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, dishwasher etc. The bed linens and towels were of excellent quality but, as some other reviews have mentioned, the sofa is pretty uncomfortable.

An absolutely delightful Cottage in a central location in the beautiful Village of Grasmere.

On entering the property we immediately knew we had made the right choice. This cottage has a real WOW factor, it is cosy, immaculate and the attention to detail from the quality furniture to the soft furnishings really is on point. This was further enhanced with the very generous welcome package of Fresh Bread, Milk, Butter, Biscuits and Chocolate. This really is a superb property in a prime location and is literally a second’s walk from the local pubs, shops and restaurants and I couldn’t recommend more highly. We have learnt that this property is part of a small group and we are now looking to visit all of them starting with their Prospect Studio in Ambleside in a few weeks from now. This is purely based on the quality and attention to detail we experienced at Poppy’s Cottage. This certainty will not be our last visit to Poppy’s Cottage and the only downside was having to leave. Thank you to the owners and to all those involved in making our stay so comfortable, enjoyable and memorable…. Simply put ‘Outstanding ‘

Absolutely lovely property and we had a fantastic stay.

We were both impressed with the cleanliness and the attention to detail throughout. The kitchen was lovely and more than adequate for our two meals in (the other one we ate out) and the bathroom was fantastic … bath/shower and separate shower! Toiletries were provided and lovely big towels. The bed was not so comfortable for me (bad back/arthritic knees) but that was just me. The only grumble was the settee was quite uncomfortable for both of us but my husband managed on a chair and I sank into the settee but didn’t feel comfortable. Wouldn’t stop me coming back though! The owners kindly provided us with a lovely hamper which was much appreciated, and we love the location too. Parking is always going to be a problem in Ambleside but we were provided with a parking disc to allow us free parking during our stay. We would love to come back … Ambleside is one of our happy places and the Old Village Shop is a wonderful place to stay. Thank you, we had a wonderful relaxing stay and used buses to get around! Perfect and lovely!

Poppy's is a really lovely cottage.

Stayed here with my 84 year old mum in July. It's very comfortable has quality furnishings and feels like home with lots of nice touches. Comfy beds, beautiful bathrooms and a great kitchen.....it's not big....Poppy's is not a big house but extremely well thought out. Did a bit of cooking and there is a handy Co-op just around the corner. We enjoyed sitting in the courtyard for breakfast and for afternoon sun. Also there is a pleasant public 'green' at the front of the property, which can get busy during the day but then very quiet after about 5pm. We both slept really well, it's very peaceful by night and no traffic noise. Grasmere is a fantastic base in the Lake District. Stunning scenery and some great walking right out of the front door - some real gems such as Helm Crag, Silverhowe and Easedale tarn. Also a really good bus service up to Keswick or Ambleside if you need. You won't go far wrong at Poppy's cottage.

    Frequent questions

    • Is Ambleside worth a visit?

Yes, Ambleside is definitely worth a visit for its scenic beauty and charming atmosphere. Located in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, Ambleside offers stunning views of lakes and mountains, picturesque walks, cosy pubs, a range of outdoor activities and, of course, beautiful holiday homes and Ambleside cottages. The Lake District in general is a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in a beautiful setting, but the charming town of Ambleside alone is worth a visit.

    • How long is the coffin walk in Ambleside?

The Coffin Walk in Ambleside is a circular route that is approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) long, ideal for keen hikers on a walking holiday. The walk takes you through picturesque landscapes, including forests, fields, and beautiful views of Lake Windermere. It's a moderate-level hike that provides a glimpse into the area's history and offers a peaceful and scenic experience. Once finished, you can make the most of your Ambleside holiday cottage by resting your feet, cooling off in the swimming pool or relaxing in the hot tub. Our Ambleside cottages are ideal for walkers, as well as anyone looking for a suitable property in which to stay while the more active people in your group explore!

    • Is Ambleside or Windermere better for self catering accommodation?

Both the lakeland town of Ambleside and Windermere have their own unique charms, so determining which is better for self catering accommodation depends on personal preferences. Ambleside cottages are often in demand due to there being fewer on offer and with limited availability this could make it harder for you to find one on your dates. The centre of Ambleside offers a more relaxed and quaint atmosphere, with its charming village, scenic walks, and proximity to beautiful lakes like Lake Windermere itself. Windermere, on the other hand, is larger and more bustling, with a wider range of amenities, available properties and attractions close by. Another big draw of a lakeland cottage in Windermere is the water-based activities available on Lake Windermere, and convenient transportation links to Bowness on Windermere, Troutbeck Bridge and the rest of the Lake District. Both are popular towns boasting all manner of accommodation, including holiday park resorts and more.

    • Is there a market in Ambleside?

Yes, the charming town of Ambleside hosts a weekly market known as the Ambleside Market. The market takes place on a Wednesday and offers a variety of stalls selling local produce, crafts, clothing, and other goods. It's a great opportunity to explore and discover local products while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the market. If you're hunting for independent shops Ambleside also has those in spades, so don't worry if you forget anything before arriving at one of our Ambleside cottages. You'll find all the amenities you'll need right here!

    • What should you look for in Ambleside cottages?

Ambleside cottages can be difficult to choose between, because there is such a large variety of Ambleside accommodation. If you're after tradition, look for a detached stone built cottage in a tranquil location, with easy access to the Lake District national park. The best Ambleside holiday cottages on our books include Rose Cottage, a fantastic cottage resting on the edge of the lake, a stylish mid terrace property with off road parking, a two bedroom holiday home with wi fi, dishwasher and baby friendly facilities, a short walk from the town of Ambleside.
