What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sandra - Verified booking

We go to the Lakes a lot, and always around bonfire night to get our dogs away from all the madness.

We have always stayed in cottages, so this was our first time in a lodge. I have to say this is the best accommodation we've ever stayed at, and I'd always look fo book a lodge first in future. It really did feel like a home from home and because there are only a small number of lodges it feels really private. The beds and bedding are top hotel quality, absolutely gorgeous. Everything worked like a dream and it was equipped to the best standard, you really couldn't ask for more. Really cosy and the wood burner was really efficient and we didn't use as much wood as we do back home. It's really spacious and the pictures just don't do it justice, we absolutely loved everything about this lodge. Some kind of bucket or something would be helpful to clean muddy paws, but we cobbled something together to make it work. Definitely get a supermarket delivery if you can, there were a number of deliveries around us while we were there. Access is really easy. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this gorgeous lodge to anyone and we'd definitely come again. Thank you for letting us stay in your gorgeous home from home.

Lovely, quiet place to get away for a couple of days.

Me and three of my friends stayed back in July and had a great time. The cottage was very clean and comfortable. There’s a beautiful view from the back of the cottage in which you can see the sheep and horses in the field. There was a warm, relaxing a hot tub and there is also a shop close by (within walking distance) so you don’t have to worry about driving far for food. We didn’t use our car once the whole trip and even managed to hike up and get the ferry to Windermere. I will say the shower did stop working on the day we checked out none of us could shower early morning before we left even though our check out wasn’t till later that morning. Despite this it was a great stay and we would definitely come back.

Shepherds Cottage surpassed all our expectations.

We read the listing on your website and the photos looked lovely, but arriving in the dark to this beautiful cottage and opening the gate to see the porch lit up and a lovely Xmas wreath in the door it looked just charming. The cottage was beautifully decorated inside and the most comfortable furnishings you could wish for, making our stay an absolute joy, so much so we really didn't want to leave and I've booked again for next year. For people looking for a charming cottage, well positioned in the Lakes but far enough away to be serenity itself Shepherds Cottage is ideal.

It was our second visit to Shepherds Cottage this year.

It’s in a great location and within easy reach of Hawkshead village with all its facilities. A beautiful cosy cottage, perfect for some much needed mum and daughter time. The bonus of a hot tub to soothe tired legs after a days walking! All the fixtures and fittings are of excellent quality and personal touches such as the advent calendar ensure a welcoming stay. It’s no wonder it’s booked up months in advance. I would highly recommend a stay here. We’ll definitely be staying again in the future.

A really lovely, cosy cottage located on a scenic farm.

The cottage has good facilities and the guest information book has everything you need to know. The hot tub was lovely! The little touches such as slippers, robes and milk in the fridge were appreciated. A Short walk into hawkshead village, and lots to do near-by. A couple of minor negatives: I personally found the pillows quite uncomfortable, and the shower is very slippery, I would reccomend placing a shower mat. Other than that, we had a really lovely time and I would stay here again.

    • Is Ambleside or Windermere better for self catering accommodation?

Both the lakeland town of Ambleside and Windermere have their own unique charms, so determining which is better for self catering accommodation depends on personal preferences. Ambleside cottages are often in demand due to there being fewer on offer and with limited availability this could make it harder for you to find one on your dates. The centre of Ambleside offers a more relaxed and quaint atmosphere, with its charming village, scenic walks, and proximity to beautiful lakes like Lake Windermere itself. Windermere, on the other hand, is larger and more bustling, with a wider range of amenities, available properties and attractions close by. Another big draw of a lakeland cottage in Windermere is the water-based activities available on Lake Windermere, and convenient transportation links to Bowness on Windermere, Troutbeck Bridge and the rest of the Lake District. Both are popular towns boasting all manner of accommodation, including holiday park resorts and more.

    • Is there a market in Ambleside?

Yes, the charming town of Ambleside hosts a weekly market known as the Ambleside Market. The market takes place on a Wednesday and offers a variety of stalls selling local produce, crafts, clothing, and other goods. It's a great opportunity to explore and discover local products while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the market. If you're hunting for independent shops Ambleside also has those in spades, so don't worry if you forget anything before arriving at one of our Ambleside cottages. You'll find all the amenities you'll need right here!

    • What should you look for in Ambleside cottages?

Ambleside cottages can be difficult to choose between, because there is such a large variety of Ambleside accommodation. If you're after tradition, look for a detached stone built cottage in a tranquil location, with easy access to the Lake District national park. The best Ambleside holiday cottages on our books include Rose Cottage, a fantastic cottage resting on the edge of the lake, a stylish mid terrace property with off road parking, a two bedroom holiday home with wi fi, dishwasher and baby friendly facilities, a short walk from the town of Ambleside.
