What our customers say about their holidays

    • David - Verified booking

Family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children (4 and 5 year old).

Visiting for 7 nights. Pros - Fantastic location for seeing Whitby (cafes and pubs within a 2 min walk, harbour a slow 10 min walk down the hill). -Comfy Beds -Beautiful kitchen -Living room size / comfort ok for small family of 4 - responsive property management to any slight issues / questions we have. - just set off the main streets so fairly quiet location and felt pretty safe however you do still get some street noise in peak hours. - nice welcome hamper - coffee machine - huge family sized cooker - modern bath tub / shower Cons - as stated in description property is over 4 floors which takes some getting used to, (1 room per floor), steps are really steep, so would not recommend to anyone with kids under 6 ish and anyone with mobility issues. Zip link bed is actually a double bed so zip link was never an option which was disappointing, which lead to us sharing beds (2 doubles) instead of having twin beds for the kids. - some windows / decor / fixtures are starting to show signs of wear. Windows and door handles really stiff, Would benefit from a maintenance person to attend just to sort lots of little like this issues but, however we appreciate the age of the property. - parking, although we are provided with a pass, it’s a bit of a lottery in terms of how close you can park, there are options a 2 min walk away which is viewable from the rear of the property if you are in luck. However you can find yourself walking 5 /10 minutes away to the car if your luck isn’t in and are less organised. (Parking Guides are provided). If you happy to park £9 per day there is parking to the rear of the property in a public car park 2 mins walk away if you are stuck for options. - Im 6ft 2 and found it hard to gain access to the top Bedroom and kitchen due to the low beams,I had to duck / crouch on entrance / exit after learning this lesson the hard way. You do get used to this though. - lacked some basic provisions such as bin bags, toilet roll, soap etc Over all, if you understand the age of the property, and are able to work round the steps issue, it’s a nice place to stay, it’s got some nice charm about the property with some lovely modern touches and the location absolutely makes it worth it.

We enjoyed staying at Sandcastle cottage very much.

We thought it was a cosy and comfortable place to stay, perfectly situated on the complex itself to access the facilities and the beach. A lovely 10 minute amble through the complex and down the proper path to the beach. So close to the pool too, was perfect to be able to let daughter’s go there on their own. The cottage was well equipped and had some nice extra touches. Lovely hand soaps and a dog crate, high chair etc if needed. The folder of info was also really useful. Rooms were all a good size and nice little bit of outside space. Lovely garden bench too to eat outside on. Well decorated throughout and well maintained. Wi-fi was welcomed as signal poor there. Good to have a TV with Netflix access. Also had some games and books too. Filey is a lovely place to visit and the complex is just outside the main town. Could walk it along beach in 20/30 mins. We drove in and under 5 mins away. Plenty of parking. Small things but could do with some more comfortable chairs to sit outside on when the sun is shining. Even just fold up camp chairs, just to give it that ‘you’ve thought of everything’ factor. Also there was a little box on the side in the kitchen which said enjoy but all that was in it was a cleaning sponge and a three coffee pods which didn’t complete an actual set to use in the machine. We aren’t bothered at all that no freebies but maybe put that basket away or poss forgot to top it up? We weren’t sure. All in all a great place and we hope to return. And have already told friends and about it. Thank you for a lovely stay.

The cottage was warm and cosy despite 50mph winds and the blizzard from the east.

It was itself a very pleasant coastal getaway and fully met expectations, but otherwise there were disappointments from the holiday as advertised. The leisure centre/gym/pool was not open in February and this should be made absolutely clear in the advert, which also states that the beach itself is just 3 minutes away. This may be true as the crow flies, but is deceptive. Following the signs through the complex it took almost 15 minutes to get onto the sand at a good walking pace, which would be of very little use to families with young children who might be carrying lots of unwieldy beach gear in the summer season. The location is great for most dog walkers and it was an asset that both the cottage and the pub were dog friendly. However, the walk to the beach was too far (and too steep towards the bottom) for my very old dog to cope, which was another disappointment. Whilst the cottage itself was lovely, I would not have booked had the details about the site facilities and location been more accurate. ***** Owner Response***** Thank you for your feedback, all feedback is extremely important to both Sykes and I. I am sorry to hear that you experienced the leisure centre to be closed, there should be no reason for this. With regards to the beach I have discussed this with Sykes and we have agreed to amend the distance to a 10 minute walk. Some of the points you have raised are regrettably outside of my control, I do hope you enjoyed your stay. All the best.

The property is on a quiet, quaint road and we had no issues with noise.

Despite the mention of the possibility of stairs being an issue, we didn’t find this a problem as long as we took care - the steps are quite shallow and some of the ceilings on the stairwells are low - but we found them ok. The kitchen had all utensils we needed for a real self catering break and there were books and games provided too. Beds were clean and comfortable. We had one issue, with the cleanliness, which was an issue at the start of our break as we did have to clean. There was quite a lot of dust throughout, the carpets needed vacuuming, the bottom of the toilets needed extra attention, crumbs were on the work surfaces in the kitchen and our dog found a bone of some description on the kitchen floor, also the front door was really quite grubby inside. This has been fed back to Sykes already and so hopefully this will not be an issue for future bookings. We were advised that the cottage are not obliged to provide cleaning products, which seemed odd if they’d like you to keep the place clean, and so we did have to purchase our own antibacterial cleaner. Dishwasher tablets were plentiful however. Be aware that milk and coffee aren’t necessarily provided on short breaks, but there are a few little shops nearby to purchase these. We love Whitby, and hopefully our feedback is taken as constructive rather than negative - the hubby also mentioned that an oven glove would be helpful!

This is the worse property that I have booked through you.

First impression was the patio door which looked dirty but this is actually inside the glass. All carpets are badly stained and dirty. The dining table wobbles and the dining chairs are dirty in the ridges at the back. Lounge furniture is stained. I had to dust the window sill and bottom of the window in the living room as was filthy with dust, dirt and dog hair. I had to set up the TV as it only had BBC channels, I also had to fill the dishwasher with rinse aid and salt. The fridge freezes the products in the actual fridge area. The extractor fan is unsuitable for use as when put on it makes a loud racket. The kitchen is very badly equipped with crockery and cooking utensils, could not use the microwave as nothing to use to heat things up in. No tea towel, dishcloth, dusters, dustpan etc. One of the under cupboard bulbs isn't working. There was black dog hair on the landing carpet when we entered the house and was getting onto our clothes and towels. The standard of cleaning in general is very poor. Bath panel is cracked, the rubber seal is filthy. The mattress on the king-size bed is very badly stained. The whole house needs a deep clean, redecorated and new carpets, fridge, extractor hood, bath panel, king-size bed and mattress. No dog bed or blankets as advertised. The Wi-Fi is very weak and slow. The TV remote does not work properly. We will not be using this property again.
