What our customers say about their holidays

    • Steven - Verified booking

We were in Whitby for the folk week.

The cottage was ideally situated for the events of interest to us.Some people comment of issues with the stairs but we didn't have any problems even carrying instruments. Seen much worse in Whitby. The windows look out over a busy street but noise was not an issue. The Sykes listing is wrong in two key facts - access time is not 5pm. The cottage documents show earlier than this but it is too late to know after travelling. It would be good to get a text on the arrival day to say that the cottage is ready for us, Further, leave time is a more conventional 10am, not 9 per the website. We were nearly put off booking by the incorrect times. Secondly the listing refers to permit parking nearby so one thinks of the scratch cards but the cottage has a permit to use at West Cliff car park for the duration of the stay. The property has a very well appointed: kitchen which had all required appliances except perhaps a tea strainer. Cupboards full of more glasses, mugs and plates that you ever would need in an accommodation this size. Sink drainer stand not the right size for the crockery though. Furniture is looking a bit battered but comfy enough. There are no fewer than 3 tvs but we did not use having the folk week entertainment Bedrooms are a bit tight for space and we had to move the twin beds across to be able to open the wardrobes. The beds are OK. Access to the bathroom is down 2 steep steps and in the middle of the night one really needs a hand rail to navigate safely. Slippers recommended as the steps dig into bare feet. The walk in shower is good but the operation is very stiff. Although there is a warning in the handbook you haven't read that in the shower on arrival. Better still just sort it. Nice towels but no where to dry them. The radiators are too close to the wall to hang them on. Please provide a heated towel rail.

This is a really nice, comfortable, very well located and excellent value property in the centre of Scarborough with wonderful views over the South Sands.

The apartment is fairly compact, but well laid-out, and very nicely decorated and furnished. Space in the bedroom is possibly a little tight for some people, but it is entirely adequate, and made up for by the exceptional view across South Bay. The lounge is very comfortable, and has the same wonderful view. There is a good-sized TV, but (as noted in the listing) you will need to know how to "cast" from your phone/tablet/laptop in order to use it properly. I had never had to this before, but it worked surprisingly well, and was fairly straightforward, but you do need to have the relevant apps (BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, Netflix etc.) installed on your device in order to use it. The kitchen is a good size, with lots of cupboard space and worktop area, and all the crockery and utensils that I needed. The bathroom is a reasonably laid-out, with a good sized power shower, although this, and the wash basin, are raised-up one step (presumably to allow for drainage), which might be awkward for some people. Overall, this is a great place to stay. It is really well located in the centre of Scarborough - just off the main street, but in a quiet courtyard. All the shops you are likely to need are very close by. The beach and seafront entertainment are about 90 seconds away. 10 minutes walk to the Station and all the main buses. I would certainly stay here again.

Stayed here over the Goth weekend and wouldn’t stay again. It’s basic, a place to sleep but not much else. Lack of basic amenities, no toilet paper, no working heating, no WiFi, toilet flush takes many tries to work, hot tap barely worked. And it’s a fair walk to the co-op to get the basic necessities that are provided by most other cottages. Other people in our party stayed in a bigger cottage near the abbey which was cheaper and they provided a welcome basket containing basics like teabags, milk etc. so I’d look elsewhere if you’re staying in Whitby. Place was also not very clean. Black mould in the shower, dirty mirrors and hair all over the floors. Knelt down in the bedroom while unpacking and was covered in what I assume was dog hair. Also if you bring a pet, check under the wardrobe in the bedroom as there’s loads of dog toys stuck under there too. Located on a noisy street which can’t be helped but expect to be woken up by the boat yard opposite at 6am and you will hear every person who walks past through the night as the windows are single glazed. Minus the mould the shower is good though, very powerful. Overall, for the price there’s a lot better places to stay in Whitby so I would look elsewhere.

Location is good, walking distance to everything, plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops around and the view of the sea from the top of the cliff is great. We could not find the location, the instructions were unclear. The arrangement for the parking was misleading, support was available on the phone only and the lady had no idea about the facility, had to contact the owner and then get back to us. We were misled and not allowed to get the parking card (which is paid for) when we arrived (2-3 hours before check-in). So we had to park on 'pay and display' first, then find our way to the accommodation and get the parking card. We were very much encouraged to pay additionally for early check-in, although we just asked for a parking card. Parking - is quite hard to find a space, so it might take a while before you find where to park and won't be close to your accommodation. There is no breakfast, luckily plenty of options nearby. We stayed 2 nights, 3 days - all this time trash was in the room, wet towels, etc.
