What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sharon - Verified booking

We stayed for one week and one first impression of the cottage we were confused.

A garden was mentioned but all we could see was a dismall little area under the kitchen window. There was a table and chairs which had seen better days, pots of dead flowers and 2 calor gas bottles. Next to this was a driveway leading to the back of other residences dominated by a neighbours 20 foot hedge. Not much sunlight coming here! The theme followed with 2 pots of dead flowers either side of the front door and a hanging basket with dead flowers. We parked the car in the parking space which is very narrow and ducked under the flies surrounding the vine tree, obviously the namesake of the cottage. Inside is ok, a bit tired, and it felt like the cottage hadn't been used for a while. My husband is a wheelchair user as he has Parkinsons and we booked the cottage because of the downstairs bathroom and bedroom. Unfortunately there were 3 large steps to the bedroom, these were not mentioned in the description and the photo of the entrance to the bedroom has a closed door so we weren't expecting this and the stairs were a serious problem for us. The downstairs bedroom has 2 single pine beds and they could not be easily accessed because they were pushed together and on one side was flush with the window and the other bed was next to the fireplace. We had to move the beds in order to get into them. In fact we rearranged the room to look like the photo, I don't understand why the layout had been changed. We had to heave my husband up and down the steps in his chair every day and night. The cottage isn't advertised as disabled friendly I know but the stairs weren't mentioned either. The rest of the cottage was fine. Location is excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The dog would have enjoyed the garden advertised but we didn't manage to find it and we certainly didn't sit at the precarious looking table. We would return to Studland it is beautiful as is the surrounding area but would not stay in Vine cottage again because of the outside space. The downstairs bedroom would be OK for able bodied people. As an extra! Think the bedding could be stored in a bag not just left under the bed and the hairdryer perhaps could be donated to a local museum.

Vine Cottage is an attractive, historic and extremely characterful cottage, in an ideal location in Studland, in a gorgous part of the country.

The beds were comfortable, bedrooms inviting and living room very homely. The bathroom was roomy and clean, however the toilet rocked rather alarmingly. The kitchen was bright and functional if a little tired. I would definitely book another stay there. That said, there are a few things we wish to raise, which are at odds with any cottage we have stayed in before. There were no bin liners in any bin, including the kitchen bin, and no spares. Whilst there was a bottle of window cleaner (?) in the kitchen cupboard, there was no general purpose surface cleaning spray or any dishcloths/sponges to clean surfaces before/after cooking. The rooms had been hoovered but the stairs had not. A light in the main bedroom did not work and there were no spare bulbs, same for the fridge light and the bathroom mirror light. There were dishwashing tablets but no dishwasher, which wasn't necessarily a problem as we don't have one at home, but just found it odd. Oven gloves are a basic kitchen safety requirement and we've never stayed anywhere before that didn't have them. Please do not describe the outside area as an outside dining area/for entertaining - better to call it a boot wash/wetsuit drying area. Whilst we appreciated the storage jars of tea, sugar etc, the coffee was rather solid and of dubious vintage and we bought our own. Contrary to the information in the cottage, bin day (for commercial waste, as per the wheelie bin label) is Friday not Tuesday, therefore we'd put the bin out on the wrong day - we edited the cottage information folder to show this for the next guests as the wheelie bin was now getting full. If you wish to have planters with flowers etc, it would be best to maintain them or have longer lasting plants. Whilst none of these things spoilt our stay, they are all little details that enhance a holiday and are commonplace in other properties. I emphasise, Vine Cottage is characterful, homely and comfortable and a delight to stay in, but attention to detail of the basics will make it exceptional.

From parking the car it's about 70yds downhill to the front door where the Balustrade is a bit loose. At the porch ceiling light has some conduit & exposed wires that are not covered. And wiring under the gutter is quite unusual. The conduit seems to appear in many parts of the house. The living room has ample seating but springs seem to be missing in some seats (so choose carefully). There is storage and central heating. The latter has faulty thermostats and cannot turn them off.The secondary double glazing is tired and the curtains blow in the wind that are also very thin. The 1st floor bathroom is about 6' square and is tricky to use and we preferred the shower on the ground floor but poor decor and a rusty radiator is not a great impression and needs replacing probably as may the strip lights in the hall and kitchen. We did not use the wood burner in the hall as we felt that there should be fire doors in the property to leave it running. The housekeepers for this property left it very well with fresh towels and bedding.Over all the property has has been repainted in recent times and is useable but needs a little help. It's the most perfect location that you could ask for.

Shame about misleading description - we had a lovely holiday in the area of studland.

The cottage itself is cute and close to the beach which is a big plus but in need of a deep clean (sofa and carpets). Please note there is no outdoor courtyard, there is room for maybe 2 people to squish in on a triangle piece of concrete that opens onto an access sideway. So as 4 adults and a dog we literally had no where so sit all week. The photo of the triangle is very misleading, it is not enclosed, does not open onto the back door and is certainly not as big as the photo shows but literally at the side of the access driveway, its great to hang the washing in. The photo of the driveway from the front is for access for the back property at the end, so you have to park on the front by the wall which is tight and just enough room for one car which is abit awkward to park, unless you have a smart car this is not parking for two. We also had an issue with the water tasting like plastic? So used bottled water - I did inform sykes about this but they didn't respond. I would just appreciate an honest description of the property - feel misled

Lovely cottage &position close to beach.

Not a problem for us but not child or dog friendly! Very small triangle of concrete with 4 large gas bottles, few dead plants in pots, 2 old chairs & small table, should not be described as a courtyard & obviously inadequate for us 2 never mind a cottage that sleeps 6!! Parking for 2 cars incorrect as narrow gap between wall & cottage makes opening of car doors on 2nd car impossible!!! Cleaning of kitchen was inadequate, fingerprints all over fridge & stains on cupboard doors are not acceptable nor the food stains on kitchen bin! Having said all this we did enjoy our stay & the beds were very comfortable & clean! We were hoping to book the cottage again to bring our elderly parents but with no outside area to speak of, it’s unsuitable!
