What our customers say about their holidays

    • Angela - Verified booking

We stayed at Gwel Marten last year so did know what we were getting.

We opted for a downstairs apartment this time so that we had the outside patio which was much better. The apartment was lovely as was our last one but it just seemed a lot more tired and it wasn’t the cleanest. On the surface it was clean and the important areas like the bathroom and kitchen were clean so I can’t complain there but the cupboards, drawers and shelves where clothes go were so dusty that I couldn’t even put our stuff in some of the areas, I am definitely not cleaning when I’ve paid a fortune to go there so we just didn’t use the spaces, or moved clothes to the front which wasn’t as bad. I bought my own hair dryer so didn’t need the one in the apartment which is just as well as the box to the hair dryer was soaking wet. I picked it up to move it so I could put some things on the shelf and the box just fell apart. The toilet seat was broken as soon as we arrived, this was very obvious and I am so disappointed we had to even experience this as this would have been very apparent when cleaning the bathroom as an entire piece that holds the seat in place was missing. Although Carbis Bay responded immediately, no one could fix it until Monday at the earliest. We didn’t want anyone in with all our belongings so we had to leave the beach early Tuesday to enable it to be fixed. It’s just something that should have been rectified before we arrived and for the money we paid, we shouldn’t have had to deal with all the hassle or the the crashes in the middle of the night when the toilet seat came apart when people used it. On a whole it was lovely staying there and we do still like the building but just felt there were things not as good as last year. We have been back 2 weeks and still haven’t had our deposit back, last year we were contacted within days to arrange a transfer so again this is disappointing as £100 is a lot of money and we should really be given compensation for all the hassle. Another little side note and me being really picky is the cheese grater is rubbish, these flat ones with a tiny section for each type of grate options are just useless as there’s not enough space to do anything with the cheese. But this is just a little something which annoyed me, but complete personal preference. Another bin bag would have been appreciated too. Again we had a few last year and had none other than the one in the bin this time, I would have bought some with me if I had known we wouldn’t get any spare. I did go in a few shops and couldn’t get any to fit the bin, again something I shouldn’t have had to do on holiday. That just seems really silly to me when it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep the place clean and tidy.

We had a really lovely stay at Tresco bungalow.

The property, views, location and facilities were excellent. It was very well equiped and had everthing we needed. The only issues we encountered were upon arrival at the Bungalow the description of how to access the property from the car park, (there was no mention of a car park) was not clear and as we arrived in the dark proved something of an issue, and no mention of any steps that you had to access from the car park. The emergency number was not helpful as you had to go through a number of options and then leave a message and someone would get back to you. Not helpful I feel if you need immediate assistance. We eventually found the main entrance which is located up some stairs on a public walkway uphill behind the Bungalow. The Bungalow does have a garden next to it which is gated which would eliminate the need to use the steps but apparently is no longer in use for guests, and I therefore feel is an issue if you have a lot of luggage or mobility issues. I did mention to Sykes that the description was not accurate, which they agreed and said they would update it. I unfortunately left an item behind which has now been returned safely but that proved a bit of nightmare as there was knowone you could speak to directly. All the numbers I tried only had options to book as a guest or rent for as an owner. You have to go through either of these options and you are then transferred, you cannot telephone customer services direct it is a digital service only. I telephoned many times to chase it up and spoke to at least 10 poeple on different occasions, having to wait at least 20 mins on each occasion having to repeat the same conversation, and then put on hold each time as they then had to contact the Carbis bay office before eventually it was sorted. It was so long winded. They stated the housekeeper had serviced the property the day we left and would have no reason to go back to the property until the next occupants left, so I had know way of knowing for over a week whether my property had been found by the housekeeper. I do feel having someone closer at hand to deal with immediate issues would be beneficial, and unfortunately would make me reluctant to book a property with Sykes again without this.

We had a very pleasant stay in St Ives.

Tresco bungalow is furnished brilliantly, with very modern fittings and utilities that made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. The location is perfect for short walks into town and directly to the beautiful beach below. We were very unfortunate with weather, so could only use the hot tub once, but it was set up nicely to be able to look out at the lovely view whilst relaxing. St Ives has some wonderful old architecture, beautiful walks in the town and challenging hills to explore, as well as some lovely pubs, an incredible old church and great restaurants. The Harbour Fish and Chips were some of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had! We took the train to Penzance as well, which was an experience, but the town isn’t any where near as lovely as St Ives, so we were glad to be staying there. Some things to note… getting to the property was a slight challenge, you need to be prepared to drive down an incredibly steep hill which looks like a footpath. Myself and my wife both decided sat nav must be wrong and diverted to a different route through town, which turned out to be a wrong move and got us a little lost down the tiny roads we shouldn’t have been on. When investigating the steep hill path by foot we realised this was in fact the way, and managed to get the car down the hill. It wasn’t a problem in the end, but some advanced warning that you’ll need a car that can handle the climb back up the hill too and some reasonably good driving skills to navigate this. Another thing of note and only minor grievance would be that the pool man came before 8am on the morning we were leaving, which we felt was a little intrusive as we had until 10am to leave. In the second bedroom, the two single beds pushed together could do with a mattress topper to make sure you can’t feel the divide. Otherwise the bungalow was excellent, well equipped, clean, modern and great location for the duration of our holiday.

This property was a real disappointment.

The location was great for us very close to carbis bay Beach and great for getting to st Ives. The cottage it’s self was not good unfortunately it was very dirty on arrival cleaners were sent back to sort this for us which was good but there is a terrible fish smell in the back bedroom which was not sorted for us so we had to put up with it for the whole weeks stay it’s was terrible. We were unfortunately unable to open the bedroom windows to help with the smell as we saw a rat one evening outside the bedroom so this worried us to leave the window open incase they came through the window. The wardrobe doesn’t shut properly either, the property just isn’t well maintained. We came to use the iron to find the plug had been cut off so a new one had to be delivered to the property for us. The oven was filthy needs a proper clean between guests and the freezer draws were also filthy. I suggest this property needs a real deep clean. The parking situation is terrible if you own a big car. With the property next door also parking there you just can’t get a big car in the parking bay if they return home with their car before you do. We did get a very insulting refund from the owners for all our issues but in our opinion they didn’t deal with it very well and to the standard we would expect. Carbis bay holidays were great and tried their hardest for us. It’s not good to spend every day of your holiday on a phone trying to resolve accommodation issues and reporting issues.

Well presented and neatly laid out property with good equipment.

Thoughtful welcome gift bag included which was a lovely touch. A beautiful view and easy to access the property. Parking was good, across the road in a covered parking spot. It was a little tight and very wide cars would struggle (larger 4WD especially). However for size comparison we could fit our big Outlander in fine by moving the wing mirrors in. The property was quite musty and this was a shame. It desperately needs dehumidifiers in the bedrooms and to have a working extractor fan in the bathroom. Humidity from the bathroom (which currently has no window or extractor) was a big issue increasing the dampness of the apartment. We stayed during good summer weather and could keep windows open so this was not a problem. I would not stay in here in the cooler wetter seasons. I feel this is a real shame as it is easily fixable. Cornwall generally has a damp climate and thought should be taken to accommodate this. Addressing these issues would make a massive improvement. I notice from previous feedback that mould has been brought up by previous visitors, so this again is disappointing it hasn't been addressed. Other than this aspect, it is a truly lovely apartment. Please action these points and visitors will be very happy and enjoy a wonderful stay every time.
