What our customers say about their holidays

    • Angela - Verified booking

We stayed at Gwel Marten last year so did know what we were getting.

We opted for a downstairs apartment this time so that we had the outside patio which was much better. The apartment was lovely as was our last one but it just seemed a lot more tired and it wasn’t the cleanest. On the surface it was clean and the important areas like the bathroom and kitchen were clean so I can’t complain there but the cupboards, drawers and shelves where clothes go were so dusty that I couldn’t even put our stuff in some of the areas, I am definitely not cleaning when I’ve paid a fortune to go there so we just didn’t use the spaces, or moved clothes to the front which wasn’t as bad. I bought my own hair dryer so didn’t need the one in the apartment which is just as well as the box to the hair dryer was soaking wet. I picked it up to move it so I could put some things on the shelf and the box just fell apart. The toilet seat was broken as soon as we arrived, this was very obvious and I am so disappointed we had to even experience this as this would have been very apparent when cleaning the bathroom as an entire piece that holds the seat in place was missing. Although Carbis Bay responded immediately, no one could fix it until Monday at the earliest. We didn’t want anyone in with all our belongings so we had to leave the beach early Tuesday to enable it to be fixed. It’s just something that should have been rectified before we arrived and for the money we paid, we shouldn’t have had to deal with all the hassle or the the crashes in the middle of the night when the toilet seat came apart when people used it. On a whole it was lovely staying there and we do still like the building but just felt there were things not as good as last year. We have been back 2 weeks and still haven’t had our deposit back, last year we were contacted within days to arrange a transfer so again this is disappointing as £100 is a lot of money and we should really be given compensation for all the hassle. Another little side note and me being really picky is the cheese grater is rubbish, these flat ones with a tiny section for each type of grate options are just useless as there’s not enough space to do anything with the cheese. But this is just a little something which annoyed me, but complete personal preference. Another bin bag would have been appreciated too. Again we had a few last year and had none other than the one in the bin this time, I would have bought some with me if I had known we wouldn’t get any spare. I did go in a few shops and couldn’t get any to fit the bin, again something I shouldn’t have had to do on holiday. That just seems really silly to me when it’s in everyone’s best interest to keep the place clean and tidy.

Well presented and neatly laid out property with good equipment.

Thoughtful welcome gift bag included which was a lovely touch. A beautiful view and easy to access the property. Parking was good, across the road in a covered parking spot. It was a little tight and very wide cars would struggle (larger 4WD especially). However for size comparison we could fit our big Outlander in fine by moving the wing mirrors in. The property was quite musty and this was a shame. It desperately needs dehumidifiers in the bedrooms and to have a working extractor fan in the bathroom. Humidity from the bathroom (which currently has no window or extractor) was a big issue increasing the dampness of the apartment. We stayed during good summer weather and could keep windows open so this was not a problem. I would not stay in here in the cooler wetter seasons. I feel this is a real shame as it is easily fixable. Cornwall generally has a damp climate and thought should be taken to accommodate this. Addressing these issues would make a massive improvement. I notice from previous feedback that mould has been brought up by previous visitors, so this again is disappointing it hasn't been addressed. Other than this aspect, it is a truly lovely apartment. Please action these points and visitors will be very happy and enjoy a wonderful stay every time.

We have being staying with Carbis Bay holidays for a significant amount of years, and this is the first time that we feel we have cause to complain.

Photographs and property description are somewhat misleading, especially the ones showing the tables outside, as they face directly on to a road, with no privacy. The small courtyard at the rear was in a untidy state with most of the flower containers having dead flowers and weeds in them. When we arrived the lawn was totally overgrown and the borders needed weeding and a general tidy up. Other points to note:- Toilet roll holders in un-appropriate positions, one of which my husband had to fix. Toilet seat in main bathroom was loose and rotated when you sat on it. One of the oven shelves had brown stuff dried on it and looked like it would drip if warmed up. I noticed the gravy boat in the bottom drawn had brown splashes up one side. The sofa and cushions had seen better days, and one of the remotes looked like it had been chewed. On a safety note I felt the bannister going to the utility area should have been on the left hand side and not the right. Also steps, leading up to property need a hand rail at the beginning. We hope you find these observations constructive, as we wouldn't want other guests to have the same disappointment as we had.

Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Without a doubt the best views we’ve ever had - we’ve been coming to Carbis bay for 10 years. Simply breathtaking and sitting on the patio on a sunny morning with a coffee was just something else. Perfect location for the beach and train station, we left the flat 5 mins before the train was due with still time to spare it’s that close. We have 2 kids aged 9 and 7 and they loved playing out on the lawn after a day at the beach. Love Carbis Bay, the beach is perfect for kids with the stream running through it, we’ve spent many hours over the years building dams and watching the water break through it. Easy and quick access to St. Ives without staying in the thick of it. A bit of feedback on the accommodation - it was perfect for us but could do with some updating: stains on living room curtains which we only noticed once drawn, lots of dark wood in bedroom, poor hot water pressure in kitchen, shower failed to drain properly (I suspect because of sand) and the tired living room furniture needs replacing in my opinion. However none of these would prevent us rebooking this property.

The location of the sail loft is ideal, you are less than 2 minutes walk to beaches and the harbour but still in a quiet location tucked away behind a little Cafe.

We didn't hear any noise from the cafe at any point. Property has no outside space but with us being so close to the beach this wasn't too much of an issue. The sail loft is accessible down some steep stone steps, we had a 2 year old with us and I myself am pregnant and found this a little tricky. Once down stairs into the property the kitchen and living space are specious, clean and lovely but not really any natural light with it being below ground. The bedrooms and bathroom where clean and fresh and a big bath tub was a bonus. The stairs however are in my opinion a bit dangerous. They are open wooden stairs with no rail or barrier at one side to stop you falling off. We had to be extremely careful with the 2 year old and I was very conscious myself going up and down. A simple hand rail would make this so much safer. Saying that the host was lovely and helpful, beds and bedding where lovely, lots of fresh towels and bits for the beach to use over your stay. I recommend this but maybe not with anyone who has little children or is a bit unsteady under foot.
