What our customers say about their holidays

    • Rachael - Verified booking

We really enjoyed our stay at Demonicus.

We would normally stay somewhere quiet and remote so this was a real change. The cottage was lovely and central with safe bike storage. A washing machine would have made a real difference and it would have been helpful to know there was an iron and board at the property. I did ask Sykes to confirm and was told there wasn’t an iron so we ended up buying one on the journey up. I also found the communication with Sykes a bit of a nightmare so I would be wary of booking through them again. They also charged us wrongly and trying to get hold of someone was far from easy. We loved the village square although noise could probably be a problem for some but it didn’t detract from our stay. Bed really comfy and bathroom nice and clean. However it didn’t look as though the cottage had been hoovered. The stair carpet was dirty and the kitchen and living room floor. Maybe a bit more attention to those things. However there was a Hoover so we gave it a quick spin over. Thanks for a lovely stay.

The cottage was beautifully and well equipped.

One of those rare finds where it’s like being in your own home, with every gadget, pan, spoon, glass, domestic and entertainment appliance. The beds were comfy and the towels big and fluffy. The location is behind a hotel, as someone else noted, and there are some dustbins and rest areas, but everything was neat and tidy and staff were discreet and very pleasant. I really wouldn’t let this put you off. In fact being tucked away really made you realise that you were staying in a hugely historic, Mediaeval village where everything is incredibly higgledy piggledy. The huge plus of this tucked away location is the peace. Middleham is a busy little place in the day and quiet in the evening, but by staying off the road you were quiet throughout the day and night. It was fascinating to see the huge number of racehorses and their stables; the scenery around is stunning and their are lots of walks from the door. This was a really fabulous cottage with every amenity. One complaint...we had to leave

Great little cottage in the heart of Middleham (two doors down from the pub and 2 minutes walk to Middleham Castle!

) Everything we needed for a week in the Dales. Stunning venue to watch the Racehorses each morning heading out to train on the nearby ‘Gollops’. Local well stocked shop open early and a lovely Fish and Chip shop which was open Weds - Saturday. Only negative was the stairs to the upper bedroom - very steep, but this is clearly stated upon booking, so can’t complain. Owners are contactable- so good for minor queries etc. Parking is a bit of a lottery as the square outside gets very busy, but by late evening we were usually able to park right outside the Cottage. Rear courtyard has little patio set and is part of a shared access to other properties, but this is Middleham and many of these hidden cottages are centuries old and we loved the hidden passages and historic quaint feel of the place. We’ll definitely go back to Middleham and would recommend Demonicus as a place to base yourself and explore The Yorkshire Dales.

The cottage is just off the square, so amenities are very close by.

The fixtures and fittings are of high quality and it's beautifully decorated, but there is a lack of manuals for most of appliances so it was guess work, especially the microwave. The main problem we had was heating, or lack of it. The property has 3 electric radiators, 1 in each of the upstairs bedrooms and 1 downstairs. All of them were in the frost state of 7c, so effectively off. There is a wood burner and 1 bag of logs which we used up that evening trying to get the place warm. During the week we used a further 6 bags as the radiator is only 1kw, so is just background heat. The property should have adequate heating included and the wood burner is optional and not as it is with the stove being the primary source of heat with the customer having to buy most of the fuel. The other option would be to include fuel in the rental. So if you come in winter be prepared to spend £50 on fuel.

      Television!

No notification to tell us no signal for tv. As a company you managed to send details prior to holiday with key collection but could not notify us about the issues with tv signal which had been down for over 10 weeks. In cottage no info or instructions to tell us what to do or even that there was a problem. Spent 2 hours trying to make tv work and only when we went out for a walk that we were told by another holiday maker that there was a problem. Positives are cottage lovely, clean and very comfortable. First contact with Sykes about issue really lovely and passed issue on to member of customer care team who did not bother speaking to us personally but e mailed,we had phoned and left a contact number. Did not seem to realise that there was a issue or that the company had been inefficient and just passed the problem on to the owner who responded positively!
