A quick couple of points: 1.

Location is great. 2. One of the best decorated properties of it's category that I've come across. 3. Property is mostly well maintained but some things have been a let down that could be improved: - One of the most uncomfortable mattresses I've ever come across. Despite there being a heavy topper, could feel most coil springs against my back the whole night making for a very uncomfortable sleep. - Cobwebs in a number of places within the property such as behind curtains, top of kitchen units etc and a thick coat of dust accumulated over time under the bed frame with a pill lying down there - whatever it was for. - No separate key to the one bedroom suite/Flat on the first floor - the only lockable door being the main entrance door on ground floor. This made it feel rather insecure for us - it's like being able to lock the one external door but not the door to the flat itself as there were no keys provided for it. Further, there's a curtain on the outside of the flat door to allow someone outside the flat to view into the flat rather than having that curtain on the inner side of the flat to let residents close it for privacy or to open and look out if needed. It may serve some purpose but not one I could understand as it was external to the first floor flat allowing a view in. - It gets very dark outside shortly after 4pm in the winter months - the lighting that's outside the property but within the lodge area is very dim and insufficient - most people end up having to walk around within the property grounds with a torch when they need to. Better/brighter street lighting in the gated area would be much appreciated by most tenants I'm sure.

The Gallery is a wonderful romantic bolthole.

Everything was spotlessly clean on arrival. The open plan room is large enough to have living, kitchen, dining and bed zones without any sense of being cramped and there is plenty of storage. The kitchen is equipped with everything that most cooks would need, but the location is within easy distance by car or bus if you prefer to eat out. There is a small patio with table and chairs and use of the lovely communal gardens, thronging with wildlife. Thoughtful touches such as a rug and folding chairs if you want to go out on a picnic, plus books, games, DVDs and CDs galore on those days you might want or need to snuggle down. Just over 100m off the main Windermere to Ambleside road, there is only a faint hum from the traffic. There is a bus stop at the turn off and currently fares all over the Lake District are pegged to £2 - a really cheap trip up to Keswick, for example, with no fuel or parking costs. Brockhole Visitor Centre is only a 5 minute walk away. Three things prevented it being perfect: 1. The listing photos imply there is a view of the lake, which is not so and I was extremely disappointed about this. 2. The hot tap for the bath and shower is rather temperamental. 3. I note from another post that one of the window's double glazing had blown and this has not yet been fixed. Despite these niggles, I would recommend The Gallery as a lovely place to stay.

This apartment is definitely not squeaky clean or well cared for, quite the opposite.

As soon as you enter there is a smell of damp that goes throughout the whole apartment. The entrance/“conservatory” leaks so if you happen to leave your shoes in it, they may well be wet the next day! The apartment itself is tatty and tired. There are stains on the furniture and there was even a blood spot on one of the pillows. There is dust and dirt in many places including next to where you sleep. It’s the worst place I’ve ever stayed in and struggle to understand the claims of previous reviews. The toilet seat doesn’t sit on the base correctly so slides each times it’s used. When we arrived, there was no soap or anything you could use to wash your hands, small things but when added together really made us question the justification of the price and advert! I took lots of photos and sent to Sykes. Lake lovers in the town offered to come and clean but it would take a lot more to bring the place up to standard, also why wasn’t it already clean? I have spoken to Sykes who said they would pass the photos on to housekeeping for future guests! We just stayed out as much as we could otherwise we would have lost our holiday in lovely Ambleside. Really disappointed with Sykes who are normally great.

The Gallery was a revelation to us, we were incredibly impressed with the quality of the accomodation and the fixtures and fittings.

It is an excpetional place to stay and the owner(s) should be very proud of what they have achieved with it. We couldn't fault anything major. The only flaw we could find is that as shower lovers we felt that the money spent on a whirlpool bath could have been invested in a more powerful shower!? It's in a beautiful location and although we ventured to Ambleside, Windermere, Grasmere and Bowness we were so incredibly pleased to be staying away from the crowds. We spent most of the week very locally, and walked around a deserted Brockhole and down to the lakeside almost every night. It was a joy to visit and the minor issues we had while we were away were dealt with at speed and very professionally - the local powercut completely beyond anyones control! We would suggest that a dedicated phone line for guests might help with dealing with enquiries and issues rather than having them share the line with enquiries about portential bookings. Finally to anyone considering The Gallery - please don't book to stay here yourself, we'd love to come back and stay again!!

We booked this cottage as a last minute stay as we were in the Lake District already and had decided to extend our stay.

The description of the cottage mentioned :"Perfect for a small family", which is not appropriate, and here is why : - the carpet was filled with very long blond hair, that my son kept picking up from the floor to show us... is this family friendly ? - there is absolutely no baby facilities in this cottage (no high chair, or cot. We had, however, requested one at booking, which after being initially forgotten, had been brought to us) - the living room is very small - the bathroom as mould on the seal around the tub - the bed in the main bedroom is not a king bed, as written in the description. - the overall place was far from being clean. The price / night for this cottage was at 220£, which was equivalent to a night in 4* hotels in the same area. The only problem is that this was far from being a 4* stay, or from bringing the peace of mind of a 4* stay, despite the view, which is, indeed, incredible.

    Frequent questions

    • Is Ambleside worth a visit?

Yes, Ambleside is definitely worth a visit for its scenic beauty and charming atmosphere. Located in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, Ambleside offers stunning views of lakes and mountains, picturesque walks, cosy pubs, a range of outdoor activities and, of course, beautiful holiday homes and Ambleside cottages. The Lake District in general is a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in a beautiful setting, but the charming town of Ambleside alone is worth a visit.

    • How long is the coffin walk in Ambleside?

The Coffin Walk in Ambleside is a circular route that is approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) long, ideal for keen hikers on a walking holiday. The walk takes you through picturesque landscapes, including forests, fields, and beautiful views of Lake Windermere. It's a moderate-level hike that provides a glimpse into the area's history and offers a peaceful and scenic experience. Once finished, you can make the most of your Ambleside holiday cottage by resting your feet, cooling off in the swimming pool or relaxing in the hot tub. Our Ambleside cottages are ideal for walkers, as well as anyone looking for a suitable property in which to stay while the more active people in your group explore!

    • Is Ambleside or Windermere better for self catering accommodation?

Both the lakeland town of Ambleside and Windermere have their own unique charms, so determining which is better for self catering accommodation depends on personal preferences. Ambleside cottages are often in demand due to there being fewer on offer and with limited availability this could make it harder for you to find one on your dates. The centre of Ambleside offers a more relaxed and quaint atmosphere, with its charming village, scenic walks, and proximity to beautiful lakes like Lake Windermere itself. Windermere, on the other hand, is larger and more bustling, with a wider range of amenities, available properties and attractions close by. Another big draw of a lakeland cottage in Windermere is the water-based activities available on Lake Windermere, and convenient transportation links to Bowness on Windermere, Troutbeck Bridge and the rest of the Lake District. Both are popular towns boasting all manner of accommodation, including holiday park resorts and more.

    • Is there a market in Ambleside?

Yes, the charming town of Ambleside hosts a weekly market known as the Ambleside Market. The market takes place on a Wednesday and offers a variety of stalls selling local produce, crafts, clothing, and other goods. It's a great opportunity to explore and discover local products while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the market. If you're hunting for independent shops Ambleside also has those in spades, so don't worry if you forget anything before arriving at one of our Ambleside cottages. You'll find all the amenities you'll need right here!

    • What should you look for in Ambleside cottages?

Ambleside cottages can be difficult to choose between, because there is such a large variety of Ambleside accommodation. If you're after tradition, look for a detached stone built cottage in a tranquil location, with easy access to the Lake District national park. The best Ambleside holiday cottages on our books include Rose Cottage, a fantastic cottage resting on the edge of the lake, a stylish mid terrace property with off road parking, a two bedroom holiday home with wi fi, dishwasher and baby friendly facilities, a short walk from the town of Ambleside.
