"This is our second visit as a family of 7 adults to Ewelands House, having first stayed in summer 2010. Voted unanimously by us all as the best house we had stayed in over the intervening years, we returned again this year (2014) and were not disappointed! Every holiday house has things you would improve/change, lets face it, but the accommodation at Ewelands caters so well for our family, spanning ages between 78 & 24 years. I put a 9 for equipment because another shower in the second en-suite would really be helpful - it is well speced but there is only a bath. The downstairs bedroom however is ideal for the Grandma in our party and there are no horrible bunk beds, that are so uncomfortable for adult use, in any of the rooms! 6 bedrooms, all clean and well equipped and the separate detached games room and the tennis court are an real 'tick box' for our family too. When it says accommodation for 12 it means it, including large cooking pans, enough glasses, china & cutlery plus enough comfortable chairs and sofas in the lounge for 12. There are also areas around the property you can find some time alone when you are 'altogether' for a week- a great boon! The details don't tell you about the American style fridge in the kitchen which dispenses ice and don't worry about having to use the Agar either, there is an electric ceramic hob and double fan oven, with grill in the kitchen too. There is no internet access provided but all of us got 3/4G and sometimes H+ signal in the lounge with our different mobiles! The views are to die for too from all of the rooms - 180 degrees views from York minster to the Pennines (there's even a fixed telescope provided on the terrace!), add in the cows and pheasants in the foreground and you really feel like you've got away for it all! So a great week of family fun without being on top of one another. There's a Tescos in Thirsk and we went on line beforehand so they delivered our weeks groceries at 9pm on the Friday evening of our arrival. The local pub 'The Carpenters Arms' does a £7 early bird menu before 7pm - check out their website, so we booked that ahead for our arrival evening too. Thanks again, we all enjoyed it so much we will probably vote to return again! "

"This house was fantastic as a base for a big family holiday. We had 10 people from 3 families and 3 generations. The house more than met our needs in all respects. The beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms are amazing, the rooms are all of a very good size, the kitchen is well- equipped and spacious. The house was a great base for all our day trips - York, Ryedale, Pickering, Whitby, Scarborough, Castle Howard, Eden Camp. There is loads to see in this part of the world whatever the weather. We had a week of almost solid rain so we particularly appreciated the wood burning fire when we returned from days out. The hot tub was also much appreciated by all. Sam and Alex were friendly and helpful. The house keeping deposit was paid back promptly and all communication with the owners was good. Two minor suggestions - It would have been helpful for us if we had known soap, shower gel, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc were included as we pre-booked a Tesco delivery for our week's groceries and ordered more than we needed. Also the information folder in the house could do with updating. The WiFi code was wrong .There was a list of "welcome provisions" - bread, cookies, champagne and fruit bowl which were not there. There was however tea, coffee and milk which was a very nice touch. There was also mention of Alexa which we never found. None of these things in any way spoiled our holiday however. The property was luxurious, beautifully appointed, very well managed and an excellent base for our holiday."

"The accommodation is in a small hamlet accessed by a narrow road. It's a quiet setting with the village of Hovingham about 30 mins walk away. The kitchen breakfast area is huge and we easily catered for our party of 10. The property is well heated and spacious. The main lounge was big enough for the group to sit, the wood burning stove giving a welcome focal point to the room. The sky system installed is the alstets Q system which also had additional screens around the house. There was a smaller lounge the children used with a L shaped settee and beanbags. They played card games and watched a couple of films together in here. The dining room had plenty of room around a long rectangular table where we could eat together. The bedrooms were brilliant. They were subtly themed and most had ensuite. This was really useful with large walk in showers and underf floor heating. The top floor had three bed rooms with a shared bathroom which we left to the children. It usefully had an electric shower. The off road packing was useful at the back which enabled unloading cars easy access. There was also a heated jacuzzi that we used most nights. The local is in a line between York and Whitby and made a useful location for visits. A great location which we would use again."

"What a wonderful location, panoramic views and what generous space in the house. If visiting as a large family or group there is plenty of living space downstairs so you are not under everyone’s feet. The grounds are wonderful to enjoy, especially in good weather. The bedrooms are slightly disproportionate in size to each other but all the same, they are more than adequate. Make use of the games room and day room if you have children in the party and the tennis court and large snooker table is in excellent condition. It’s lovely to take in the house and use it, not going out every day and maybe consider wandering around the local footpath’s, take in the village chuch and the Carpenters Arms for Pimm’s at lunchtime or a good pint of well kept beer. The food is also excellent and I recommend booking the private room for a special occasion. Go for a walk at Sutton Bank and to Kilburn’s white horse. You will sleep well after all of that. Local supermarket in Thirsk but we wish we had arrange for a food delivery through one of the large supermarkets to arrive on the night or next morning of arrival. That saves taking all the food/drink with you and having to do a big shop on your first day. May 2011. "
