"The Lakes is an area of England we should have visited years ago and we were so pleased that our first stay in the area was in a place that it is difficult to overpraise. We had detailed directions to the boathouse and so were ready for the sudden turn off the road and down the track to the boathouse. Its quite a long way along a fairly difficult track and I was glad we weren't in a low slung sports car. But that adds to the seclusion that the Far Boathouse provides to couples who want to get away and enjoy each other's company. We arrived and opened the door. Wow! Past the kitchen and the bedroom is the lounge and through a sliding triple window right in front of you is Ullswater and the mountains beyond. Again wow! The Boathouse looks as though it is brand new. In fact it was severely flooded in December 2015 and Jayne has spared no expense in restoring the place and furnishing it in five star luxury. I should add a bottle of champagne and a vase of red roses were waiting for us when we opened the door. We stayed for four days and enjoyed the best and almost the worst the weather could throw at us for April. A blizzard on our first evening obliterated the lake and opposite shore and then gave us even more stunning views of snow capped peaks for the rest of our stay. After that the sun shone but it unfortunately wasn't warm enough to enable us to sit out on the balcony over the lake to enjoy drinks. We did still enjoy the views though but warmly behind the double glazed windows. Three sets of binoculars were provided for our use, just a small sign of the thought that has gone into furnishing and fitting out the boathouse. If you want to keep in contact with the rest of the world go somewhere else. If you enjoy luxury and each other then book the Far Boathouse. This is a review of the Far Boathouse so I won't say much about Ullswater other than the boat trips are fun, lakeside walks are good and there are a few good restaurants around worth visiting. We had a fabulous time and want to come again."

"The cottage/ barn conversion was brand new, we were only the second guests and the first to visit with a dog. The property was very tastefully converted and decorated with all the furniture and equipment brand new. There a couple of very minor omissions that were quickly rectified by the owner. From the sitting area inside the property there was a lovely view over Ullswater. There were a couple inaccuracies in the description of the property; there was no tumble drier due to a potential fire hazard. (Not very likely but that’s ‘elf and safety!) the decked area mentioned is apparently forthcoming; this should enhance the property as the only outside area available at present is a picnic bench in the cobblestone courtyard behind the property, which has no view and is not awfully comfortable. The main problem was that apart from the owners garden the courtyard is the only area for dogs, which is neither enclosed nor dog friendly. The instructions, which we received after making the booking, said that the gardens were private. Fortunately for us the owner took a liking to our dog and allowed us to go through the garden to an enclosed paddock. However without this it would have be very difficult as there is nowhere in the immediate vicinity to let a dog off the lead. Whilst we were there the weather was not great so sitting outside was not an option, however if the weather had been better we may have struggled. I would give the actual house 10/10, especially once the decking area is available but would be a little wary if holidaying with a dog, unless they don’t require much outside space and can be kept on the lead, both to stop them from going into the private area and to keep them from wandering. There is busy road nearby, although there is a a cattle grid at the entrance to the property which hopefully should stop any dog from going on the road."

"The photo used gives the impression that the house with the balcony and the garden in front is Highgate Cottage. It is in fact the owners house and Highgate Cottage is to the right, in the photo with no balcony. The garden is in front of the owners house. There is no DVD player and use of Wi-Fi is not made available although there is a very good signal. The "utility room" is between the cottage and the house so, to use the washer, dryer and allocated top drawer of the shared freezer, it is necessary to go downstairs, through the double bedroom to the outside, along a bit and unlock the utility room. This is pretty inconvenient if you want to get some ice cream or some frozen peas out and there is no freezer compartment in the cottage fridge. Central heating comes on ( during a wet mid-October two week period ) from 7-9am and 4-7pm. For an extra hour boost it is necessary to go and ask the owners or use a fan heater which is noisy and blows up dust. The owners went away for 3 days in the middle of our stay, leaving a large notice telling us not to touch the central heating controls. My husband is not very mobile and we both found it quite cold at times. Access from the outside is straight into the double bedroom which may not be suitable for some people. We went to speak to the owner when a bulb in the bedroom blew and the lighting failed, causing the trip mechanism to cut in. She reset it and promised to get a replacement bulb for it and two others, one in the living room and one on the stairs. She replaced the bedroom bulb but the other two were still not replaced after 10 days, when we left. At no time did the owners come to check if all was OK or even to say goodbye when we were packing up. We found it quite unfriendly."

"Had a midweek stay here in May and absolutely loved the place. The boathouse is everything the pictures suggest and more – nothing can really prepare you for the fabulous view as you come down the private drive and see the vast expanse of Ullswater glittering behind the house. Inside was spotlessly clean, and the heating was on to welcome us. Fab kitchen with quality appliances, lovely comfy sofas in the living room, high threadcount bedding, monsoon shower and huge heated towel rail in the bathroom. Nice touches like plenty of coat hangers in the wardrobes so both of us could unpack properly, a decent hairdryer, and little treats like champagne, chocolates, and flapjacks for breakfast. There were also binoculars, board games, folders full of local information and even artists pencils for drawing! The only tiny change we would suggest is perhaps putting a bigger mirror up at the entrance to the site as it was a bit tricky to see oncoming traffic when you pulled out. We found the agency letting this property excellent for dealing with – responses to queries always came back the same day, often within minutes. Instructions for getting to the boathouse were very clear and emailed to us immediately upon payment of the balance. What we especially loved was that for much of the year you can book short breaks of 3 nights or more, which makes it much more affordeable – please don’t ever stop doing this! Have never been so sorry to leave anywhere and will definitely be back. Oh, and to the person that said they would buy the boathouse if they won the lottery – fight you for it! "

"We stayed here for a long weekend and was a short notice booking so that my brother and partner could do the 15k Keswick challenge and we had a fantastic weekend. The cottage exceeded our hopes. It is one of the cleanest, comfortable and well equipped cottages we have ever stayed in with wonderful views from the front window. Being an upside down arrangement, Front access was through the main double bedroom, which we did not find to be a problem at all, but there was a back door access into the main hall as an alternative. There were chocs, wine, flowers, milk and free wifi with lots of books and magazines with information about the area, all very welcoming and thoughtful. There were plenty of places to eat at Pooley Bridge, 5 minutes down the road, and whilst the cottage is in a peaceful location, it is well sited for easy access to the Lakes and there were walks to do from the cottage. I think the owners have put a lot of thought and effort into this cottage and were very pleasant and helpful. I would definately recommend the cottage and hope to visit again."
