From secluded cottages above misty lakes to market town mansions on cobbled streets, Cumbria doesn't just cater to one kind of getaway. It's a treat for anyone craving a rural adventure.

Ranked as the ' second-best place to photograph in England', Cumbria is a world of emerald fields, majestic mountains, and some of the best sunsets the world has to offer. But its landscape isn't just a gift for sightseers, it's a treat for foodies too. Cumbria is home to a world-renowned range of incredible local produce and award-winning restaurants thanks to its rich and fertile land.

To complete your trip to this stunning part of the world, book one of our dreamy Cumbria holiday cottages. Our carefully curated collection of Cumbria self-catering properties includes everything from ancient stone cottages to stylish, sprawling estates.

Why choose a Cumbria weekend break or staycation?

Cumbria is famous as the home of the glorious Lake District National Park, but it also includes part of the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, so you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to how to spend your days.

As well as the Lake District, Cumbria boasts three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so pack your walking shoes and make sure you have enough memory on your phone because you won't want to miss a single minute.

The landscape of Cumbria is like something from Middle Earth. Sparkling lakes, dramatic peaks, majestic mountains, green valleys, and lush rolling hills mean you'll never be short of a fantastic walk. Especially if you break it up with a delicious pint in one of Cumbria's ancient pubs.

History lovers will be in heaven when visiting Cumbria. Not only can you explore some of the earliest stone circles in the UK, such as Swinside and the mysterious Castlerigg Stone Circles, but the fascinating Hadrian's Wall also runs along its border, where you can walk in the Romans' footsteps.

It's not just walls and stone circles that add to Cumbria's rich history. The area is packed with castles and castle remains, from the mighty fortresses built by the Normans to the first forts constructed by the Romans.

Boasting some of the UK's most significant historical moments, Carlisle Castle was constructed with stones from Hadrian's wall and is an imposing fortress to wander around. Or why not explore the haunted Muncaster Castle that dominates the Lake District coastline? For some epic ruins, and the perfect spot to enjoy an epic picnic, head to Kendal Castle and feel yourself get transported back in time.

The beauty of Cumbria has been a beacon for writers and artists over the centuries, including two of its most famous residents, Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth. You can visit both of their charming homes and discover more about Potter's delightful animal creations at The World of Beatrix Potter.

While all the lakes in Cumbria are special, there is something truly magical about Lake Windermere. Not only can you walk around the huge lake, taking in the scenery and earning yourself a delicious lunch, but you can also hop on a lake cruise and see the beauty of the lake from the comfort of a boat.

While visiting the great lakes, make sure you pop into the village of Windermere. It's a sweet and sleepy village filled with pretty shops, restaurants, tearooms, and a laidback atmosphere that'll make your regular life feel a million miles away.

We've only scratched the surface of what to do in Cumbria. To see it all for yourself, book one of our Cumbria holiday rentals and plan your perfect adventure.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Andrew - Verified booking

The electric wall heaters in the lounge were controlled by the owner on her mobile phone.

She kept turning the temperature down on them and sometimes off completely. We had to telephone her numerous times and ask her to turn the heating on or up, because the room was freezing. It was snowing outside when we were staying there. The Lake District can still be extremely cold even in the summer. The broadband service was so erratic and slow it would not allow Netflix or iPlayer to operate, so the tv was useless. We ended up using our own Vodafone data for the internet. The amount of stairs you have to climb from the front door up to the bedroom is 28, which is even a struggle for someone who is fairly fit. They provided us with one small bath and hand towel each for two weeks holiday, which is really penny-pinching, considering that there is no washing machine in the apartment to wash laundry. The property comes with an allocated parking space, which is ideal in the centre of Windermere. The apartment is located in the centre of Windermere, with shops, restaurants and pubs right on your doorstep. The lounge and bedrooms were decorated to a good standard with very nice furnishings. The kitchen was well equipped with everything required for cooking and eating.

Beck Cottage has a lovely layout, with a cosy atmosphere which was enhanced by a charming wood burning stove, perfect for relaxing evenings, which we booked as a last minute little pick me up after illness before Christmas.

However the stay was unfortunately overshadowed by a few issues. The cottage on closer inspection wasn’t very clean. There was dusty surfaces, a large amount of cobwebs, toothpaste on a tap and mould under the bath taps. Later during the stay we found a finger nail and food down the back of the sofa. Additionally the sink had broken plumbing which meant that after a couple of water leaks we couldn’t really use for it for five out the the seven days. Whilst we appreciate that it was over the New Year period you would have thought that an emergency plumber could have been utilised. Although permission was given to the hosts to enter the property to check the plumbing on one day, we were concerned that the day after someone had entered the property and turned some lights out that we purposely left on to help us navigate up the path in the dark when we returned from a day out, which was unsettling and intrusive. Whilst Beck Cottage is in a great position and had the potential for a really great stay, the lack of maintenance, cleanliness and lack of privacy detracted from the overall experience.

This was our third visit to Laal Field House.

We hope to get back again next year unless it is (as usual) fully booked. We love the house, its size, garden, location ... everything. A couple of comments / negatives from this year. The house does need a tidy up in a couple of places - Small patch of wallpaper hanging off the ceiling in the living room, mould spots on the ceiling of the main bathroom. The refuse bin. We were five adults, one toddler and one baby. The bin was almost entirely full when we arrived on Friday. It was emptied on Tuesday but we had almost entirely filled it with refuse and nappies by the time we left on the following Friday. Could really do with a larger refuse bin. Only one front door key this year - to be used by the two families at the house ! - Contacted Sykes, somewhat unhelpful and possibly patronising (in my opinion) response. And no high chair this year (we were provided with a high chair on previous visits) The house really does have every facility ... except a high chair.

      Fabulous well equipped property.

Spotlessly clean with comfy beds and our dog loved the huge secure garden. We had thought that the nearby Premier Inn would have impacted on privacy but there was no noise at all and it didn’t really overlook the garden. We did have a couple of small issues which were dealt with and the lovely owner even phoned and then visited to check everything was OK. A couple of suggestions which are in no way complaints but would have been appreciated would be a coffee machine and a garden parasol to provide some shade. There were cafetières but I am a total coffee snob and love my morning coffee. If there was a garden parasol stored away we didn’t see it, however, the property was so big we may have missed it! Lastly, a wifi repeater might improve the signal to the end bedroom. The biggest issue is that we want to book to come back and there looks to be no availability!!!

Lovely spacious property with a massive flat garden… the grandchildren loved it as it was perfect for outdoor games of football, cricket etc.

and also very safe as fully fenced and hedges around so private too. The front very large gated area to the property is also perfect for parking with masses of room. Laal Field House is in a good position just outside the busy centre of Keswick ( so quieter) but a very short walk in… and the pencil museum is just across the road . Good proximity to excellent cafes and restaurants too and walks to Portinscale and beyond or the lakeside at Keswick. Some more outside seating on the patio would be great . The only problem for some would be the large mound of rubble next to the property but it’s not very visible in the garden or from the house. I hope the premier inn is built soon or the rubble removed as it doesn’t look good as you arrive…but instantly forgotten once inside it in the garden.
