    About this property

Hillside is located in the small village of Talsarnau, which sits between Harlech and Porthmadog and is a great location to discover the beauty of North Wales. The village has a pub, bistro serving food, train station and beautiful estuary walks. Formerly two cottages, Hillside now offers 3 bedroom accommodation, as well as a well-equipped kitchen, separate dining room and living room with an open fire for cosy nights in. As a former slate miners cottage, Hillside retains some of the old charm of times gone by, including an open fire, exposed floor boards and slate floor. Electric radiators throughout provide guests with instant heat for colder evenings. Guests can access the terraced garden from the rear bedroom, as well as from the kitchen downstairs. The garden terrace with garden furniture provides a sunny spot to relax and unwind after a long day walking, sightseeing or at one of the local beaches or tourist attractions. Local amenities including cash point machine, convenience store, cafes, takeaways, fish and chip shop, antique shops and post office are only a 5-minute drive to Harlech. Hillside is well-located for many visitor attractions, the famous Portmeirion Italian style village is a short drive and has been the location for many films, as well as the hit 1960’s television show ’The Prisoner’. The famous Ffestiniog Railway will take you on a spectacular journey from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog, whilst the Snowdon Mountain Railway is the easy way of getting to the summit of Mount Snowdon, or you can explore the ruins of Harlech Castle, a World Heritage site. Talsarnau Estuary is easily accessible by foot from the property, where you can take in the stunning views of the surrounding area. Travel a little further and go hiking in the mountains of Snowdonia or fishing at Lake Trawsfynydd. There are many beaches near to Hillside including Harlech and Black Rock Sands by the town of Porthmadog, where further amenities including larger supermarket, petrol station independent cafes and shops can be found. Shop 4½ miles and pub 25 yards.

"Great cottage in all aspects apart from a road side location would not be good for some."

"The cottage was comfortable, well equipped and in a great location."

"There should be a warning about the very steep and narrow stairs, particularly for people with walking difficulties, this would have been a big problem. No garden as such and steps up to an area with table and chairs very steep. The shower was either hot or cold. No shops nearby, just a pub which served great food. On our 3 night stay were only able to park in front of cottage on one occasion, had to park a good way down the road other 2 days. Other than the above it was a pleasant cottage to stay in with plenty of crockery and cutlery."

"Kitchen didn't have a tin opener that worked or oven clothes - little things but improvisation was tricky. We didn't realise until our last day but a neighbours dog had been entering the garden - it had messed in the gravel seating area 14 times over 3 days! It was disgusting - not blaming anyone but the dog MUST be kept out in future"

"Lovely cottage but found it quite cold and needed a lot of time to get warmed up. Little disappointed that the tv was broke and in the time we were there it wasn't fixed (5days)."

"only issue really was the lack of wi fi and maybe a up grade on channels on tv - would of been happy to pay a small extra charge for both"

"The cottage was wonderfully fitted out with lovely furniture and it had a washing machine which we took full advantage of. We spent many evenings playing table games with our children after exploring the Harlech area.We have a special needs daughter and usually she starts crying to go home by day two and by day three we give in and go home, something about the cottage let us stay the whole seven days. Our youngest son celebrated his birthday there and had a lot of fun playing around in the dining room. The only down side is sometimes there was not immediate parking outside the cottage there was bad wi-fi reception but we knew that was due to the area not the house and finally my son brought his PS3 and could not connect it to the TV even with the correct cables.Overall a great holiday in a fantastic location"

"The downstairs area of Hillside was great. It had a large dining area and a comfy, modern sitting room, with new carpets and lots of comfy seating. The kitchen was well equipped but some of the pans and pots in the cupboards were dirty and so were some of the insides of the cupboards. The downstairs loo needed a door and smelled awful. The upstairs was disappointing as every bed had animal hairs all over the blankets and in the beds. The fitted wardrobes in the bedrooms were unusable as they were full of cobwebs and dirt. The drawers were dirty inside and a few were broken, as was the wardrobe in one of the bedrooms. Having a dirty, blocked vacuum cleaner in the wardrobe was horrible too. The toilets made a terrible noise when they were flushed. The shower needed a good scrub, and, ideally, needed replacing. I know the place is old, but there was a distinct smell of damp which lingered on our clothing. The location wasn't ideal either in terms of children as there was nowhere for the children to go beyond the cottage. It was more suited for walkers. On the surface it looked good but it was a big disappointment and we wouldn't stay again."

"Issues with equipment and electricity. Only one towel provided and when called care taker two more arrived but not enough for the 6 of us staying. Had to share until day 4. Caretaker resigned during our stay so unable to resolve towel issue quickly. Toaster not working but replaced on day 6. Washer/dryer not as avertised as only a washer and difficult to dry clothes with no clothes line. Shower not very powerful. Electricity super expensive costing us £50 for a week in April despite the fact that we were out most almost all day every day, we kept all lights off in rooms not using and after 2nd day when got warmer, only used two downstairs heaters in evening. On the plus, its a beautifully decorated cottage with spacious rooms and is clean. It is also a good base for beach as well as exporing the national park."

"Perfect location to escape away over new year. My wife and two dogs had a great time, easy drive to the beach and an excellent pub just seconds away. Every one very friendly.Only minor issue was electric shower wasn't great and the electric heating proved expensive, especially as I believe no one had been staying the week before.Overall would definitely go back again."

"We had a good time at cottage. Was central to all places we wanted to visit. The ship aground pub was very hospitable, you are able to buy take away from here. "

"Very nice cottage with ample space for dining and relaxing. All decor to high standard. Bedrooms good size. Real fire plus point and rear terrace area. April 2012."

"It is a very nice property made up of two old cottages combined to make one spacious one. The location of the village is very good, though it is a fair distance to the nearest shops so I think it is more suited to those with cars. Having said that, the Cambrian coastal railway has a stop just a few hundred yards from the property. A guest house down the road does great breakfasts and is sometimes open for evening meals too (though not when we were there). There is no internet access and we found mobile phone signals in the property were poor so it is a good place to go to ’get away from it all’ but not one for people who have to ’keep in touch’. There is a very good curry house in Harlech, about 3 miles down the road. We found that the locals in the Lion Hotel in Harlech were extremely friendly and loved our puppy, so it’s a good place to call in if you have a dog! We liked harlech Castle, the Bleanauu Ffestinog railway, the beach at Barmouth and the Precipice Walk at Dolgellau. If you want a lively night life though, this cottage is not for you! The storage heaters do (eventually!) kick out enough heat, but ideally would be replaced with something more practical. April 2012."

"The cottage was clean and spacious for the 5 adults, 1 baby and a large dog which comprised our party. The kitchen was reasonably equipped and the lounge comfortable. Sept 2011. "

"Accommodation was quite good. Bedrooms were good but could have done with a mirror in the second double bedroom - I had to go in the bathroom to put on make-up etc. Beds were comfortable and clean. May 2010."

"The property was really nice and was VERY nicely decorated. The space was ideal for six people and all felt very cosy in social areas. The garden was perfect and perfect for barbecues! Location was good, very quiet little community with lovely pub too! Unfortunately the shop has now closed down which we were not aware of when we arrived, luckily we arrived early so the drive to Porthmadog was not a problem. April 2010."

"The house was cosy and well maintained. The bedrooms were very good with comfortable beds and good bed linen. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower which was a help to our aged parent. The kitchen was well appointed. The only bad point was that a welcome pack of bread, milk and a days use of fire wood, would have been a great help as we arrived late and the nearest shop is at Harlech, 3 miles away. Dec 2009. "

"Garden & cottage are beautiful. The cottage is great for a ’girly weekend’ chilling out. April 2009. "

"This property was in an excellent location. The village itself was very quiet and peaceful and many places could be reached within a 15 to 20 minute drive. The nearby beaches are some of the best we’ve been to. The accommodation itself was very spacious and comfortable and it’s certainly somewhere we would consider staying again. Feb 2009. "

"The cottage was a credit to your site & the owners, only complaint was that it rained most of the week & most of local ammenities were closed, but a brilliant holiday had by all. Nov 2008."
