From spacious apartments in the heart of the city to cosy historic hideaways a hair’s breadth from the Yorkshire Moors, if you’re planning a holiday to York and the surrounding region there are lots of stunning properties too choose from. Looking for a pet-friendly option or a spacious dwelling comprising all modern conveniences? You can’t beat the luxury and convenience of holiday cottages in York.

A medieval town steeped in history, the winding streets that characterise York are like nothing else. This stunning northern city boasts a wealth of cultural and historic landmarks, from 13th century walls to the magnificent York Minster cathedral. In Roman times York was the capital of Britain and the city’s long and prestigious heritage is everywhere you look. And you will feel rather prestigious yourself as you enjoy a memorable stay in an idyllic York cottage.

Things to do when you stay in York Cottages

It’s a cliché, but a visit to York really is like stepping back in time. While other cities have morphed and changed to keep up with the modern age, there are parts of the city that have remained untouched for nearly two millennia. York’s historic highlights are too numerous to mention, but include the remains of the Roman fort of Eboracum and the medieval street named the Shambles; a definite must visit. There are many more of York’s treasures on display in York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre.

Our UK comedy clubs guide includes some great comedy nights in York.

York is hugely popular with tourists, so you’ll find plenty to see and do as you meander through the ancient streets, including top drawer shops, cafés and restaurants serving hearty, traditional fare. Head away from the city and the tourists to discover some of the most breath-taking natural landscapes in the whole country, including North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast, so don’t forget to pack those walking boots, and a camera.

York cottages are the perfect accommodation if you’re looking to stay in this historic city, giving you the freedom and flexibility to explore, and packed with character. York cottages are your own little hideaway in easy reach of all the main landmarks – making an amazing family holiday that you’ll remember forever.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • John - Verified booking

A quiet and relaxing holiday in a well equipped property.

We did one or two local walks but excess to the castle ruins in the village is not allowed for obvious reasons. You will know when you see them, however you can circumnavigate them. There are two pubs in Sheriff Hutton but the Castle Inn a few 100 yards away is now closed for the foreseeable future. The Highwayman does a really good Sunday Lunch but we didn't try the pub in the week, cooked a few meals in the cottage. A one woman taxi service exists in the village, see the local magazine. At the end of the road near the Highwayman is a really good cafe, it is called Quarmby's, we highly recommended it for a tasty treat and coffee. Openings, Wednesday. thought to Sunday. The cottage was comfortable and we slept well in a large bed, there is plenty of wardrobe and draw space. No problems with the facilities as there is a folder provided with all the information needed. The internet and mobile signals are good. No major problems, the owner is only a text or call away and is very helpful. I would like take this opportunity to thank her for the food, milk and beverages she provided on our arrival.

The property is in a good location for visiting York and the surrounding area.

There are very good eating establishments nearby as well as the York Park and Ride facility. The following feedback is given with the intention of being helpful: - a welcome pack would have been appreciated, even just a pint of milk and some tea and coffee sachets. Rather surprising there was nothing. - the bed linen needs attention, there were stains on a pillow case and a bed sheet. - towels were provided but one had a hole in it. - the shower cubicle needed cleaning before we were prepared to use it. - overall more attention should be given to cleaning the Lodge, there were dust gatherings on some furniture and debris under the settee cushions. - the place suits a couple yet there are two single beds and no headboard. It would be far better with a double bed, headboard and new bed linen. - some thought might be given to the bedroom furniture as it is very dated pine furniture and cluttered. A wardrobe able to hang ladies dresses would be far better. - the outside patios would benefit from a jet wash and some weeding. Sorry, but great location but let down by attention to detail.

Cartwheel Cottage was comfortable, clean, peaceful, and had easy parking.

The owners were very helpful and friendly, and their four-legged family an added bonus! I queried whether there was a microwave or not, before arrival, as different websites had different information on this. There wasn't, but they put one in for my stay. For people with limited mobility but not wheelchair users, there is one small step up into the cottage, which I found perfectly manageable with M.E/CFS. There is a short walk from the car parking area to the cottage, but on one level and a hard surface. Wifi was non-existent within the property during my stay - the owners in their advertising are transparent about wifi issues - but I believe there would have been reception from in front of the house had I tried that. However the EE network and data was perfectly sufficient, and I managed to tether my iPad to my phone for those times when I wanted to check local online maps, opening times of places, etc. Nothing else matters while on holiday. I would happily return.

      The cottage was a delight.

The welcome pack was a really nice touch and the homemade jam was gorgeous. The cottage was very clean throughout and the cleaner deserves to be personally thanked. The cottage was spotless. We loved the shower and the rear garden sitting out area. The bed was very comfortable and we had very restful nights. We loved the wooden shutters and the wood burner. We used it once on one chilly evening, but didn't need any wood. Burning the coal that was made up for us, was enough to take the chill away for an hour or so before bedtime. We understood that the cottage had access rights through the neighbours garden (like we do at our own home), but we didn't need to use that rear access. The weather was really good for our holiday break and our dog's feet were cleaned up and dried with towels (provided) at the front of the house. People in the village were very friendly, especially the young man in the stone house to the left beyond Ascot.

Attractive and spotlessly clean property. Lovely welcome hamper and friendly hosts. Great location. Would have given 5 stars but lots of irritating niggles. Frustratingly they were the sort of things which might become evident to the owners themselves if they were to live in the property for a week. Minor niggles only such as no mirror in the bedroom and small uncomfortable sofas but they did add up. We found the small shower rooms difficult .....the showers themselves were great but there wasn't even one small shelf upon which to place even a contact lens case in the 'ensuite'. Tiny low stools instead of bedside tables were awkward too when you have to have specs, a glass of water, a book and medication etc to hand at night. I guess if we were younger, had fewer aches and pains and better eyesight the holiday would have got 5 stars.......apologies for getting old.
