What our customers say about their holidays

    • Jane - Verified booking

On entering the property there was an overwhelming smell of ash, soot and fust.

The front door and windows were open, and this did nothing to lose the smell; which stayed with us the full week! The cooker and oven were dirty. Near the oven door on the cupboard next to it, was a big scorch mark, given time will catch fire. Unfortunately we did not use it, which meant having to eat out, which we did not budget for, hence booking a place which we could cook in was a given. The worktop was sticky to touch, despite it being wiped by myself daily. We had no running hot water throughout our stay, and had to boil a kettle to wash the few pots we used. The fridge was clean. The bathroom needs a deep clean. There was mould on the seal, and between the tiles. There was someone else's hair near the shower unit and their used scrunchy. The towel's did not smell freshly laundered and were very thin. No running hot water from the sink tap in the bathroom. The beds need either replacing or a mattress topper put on top of them. There were black bits/things on the scatter cushions and the previous tenants tissues under one of the single beds. Again the bedding did not smell like it had been freshly laundered. The carpets were thread-bare in places, with stains scattered around the upstairs carpets. The paint work had a thick layer of dust and felt sticky and grimy to touch. If my child had, had his way we would not have stayed the first night, and just returned home the same day we arrived. I have asked the owner for half of the fee I paid to be reimbursement if not the full payment. The owner gives himself 11-3 to do a turnaround between visitors, and works a job as well, this clearly is not enough time to clean the cottage and the hot tub. Can you please request a full refund, I do have photos to support my review.

Mary and Bertie were very nice hosts for our week.

The cottage is just as the listing describes. It sits a little bit out of the village of Cartmel, so is a little bit of a walk into the village, but not undoable. The lanes to the cottage are narrow, but we never had any issues and there are plenty of passing places. The cottage itself is lovely. Everything is there you could need, and even some little extra touches you wouldn't normally get (I'll not say what, it would spoil it). The kitchen is a good size and very well equipped, the lounge is comfortable and functional. Upstairs is really big with plenty of space. I know it's a 2 person cottage, but you could easily fit a fold out bed in as well and still have loads of room. The bed is lovely and comfy. One tip, if you're not an early bird close the blinds at night or you'll be woken by the sunlight streaming in at 5 in the morning. Bathroom is a good size too. The shower isn't high pressure, but does the job and has lots of room. We stay somewhere different each time we visit The Lakes, but would definitely come back here.

      Steve was the perfect host.

It was my gf bday and requested in advance for roses to be on the bed on arrival to which he did without bother. It was extremely thoughtful. We arrived gone midnight after a 7 hour drive but next day were greeted by Steve who was very polite and thorough giving us a tour of the grounds. Showing us how the hottub works and giving us a tour of the land. Steve checked in during the week to make sure we had everything we needed and suggested places for us to visit in the nearby area. The property itself was cozy, plenty of firewood provided to light the house fire, incredible heat for those cosy nights in, everything in the property was spot on from the shower to the bed to the sofa and cooking facilities, the bed was extremely clean and comfy, the bathroom and facilities were spot on clean and the kitchen and cooking area and utensils were all clean and fresh. Overall it was a brilliant stay and we will definitely be returning in the near future. Matt + Rach

      Good points first.

. gardeners cottage was cosy with an excellent wood burning stove & unlimited free supply of firewood. An adequate shower & plenty of hot water. The wood burning hot tub was excellent, in a lovely sun trap ..once again the wood supply seemed unlimited! The 4 acres of grounds were beautiful & our dog loved it! What must be said is that the new host Danielle began taking things in hand during our stay & was very helpful. Not so good… In the cottage many of the facilities are a bit dated & grubby in places. The settee.. although comfortable was a little old & saggy. The grounds, although potentially beautiful, needed some overhauling & a good clean up! The walk to the hot tub was a bit of a challenge ( some 50 yards over uneven stepping stones ) All in all it has to be said we thoroughly enjoyed our stay..this place has the potential to be wonderful & we are sure that now Danielle is on the case.. this will happen.
