What our customers say about their holidays

    • Sophie - Verified booking

Penny Liggan was a spacious holiday rental, with amble parking and good outdoor space for our dog.

However the house felt run down and very out dated with exception of the kitchen which had been refitted. The kitchen taps would make a horrendous noise every time someone used the shower/taps from their bathrooms (we worked out they weren’t screwed on tightly enough). The SKY TV didn’t work, they only provided terrestrial channels as they didn’t have a subscription, they just provide a sky box, which would ordinarily be fine if the TV was smart and would allow us to log in to our Netflix / Amazon accounts but it wasn’t, so for future holidaymakers, bring an HDMI cable and a laptop that you can plug in to be able to watch content on demand, otherwise you will be watching either live terrestrial television or old DVDs (we recommend Enemy at the Gate from the collection). My parents had the large double bedroom, auntie in the 2nd double bedroom and my husband and I in the twin bedroom. The twin had a broken chest of drawers which was difficult to open and no wardrobe, it felt damp in there also. Something also to bear in mind was that the property looked directly onto St Enodoc’s golf course, which is cool, until you realise you don’t have a huge amount of privacy because they can look in on you in 3 of the bedrooms and the living room. The outdoor space was nice, we sat out on the chairs often, we didn’t use the BBQ as we didn’t have reason to. If you like us are keen body boarders in Cornwall, be aware there are no outdoor showers and no dedicated drying space for wetsuits. There is a laundry room but one of the cupboards is locked (standard) but the other cupboard isn’t suitable for wetsuits. The roof light in the painted red downstairs toilet leaks, so if it’s raining you will get wet whilst doing your business. The kitchen is space is lovely with a large table for everyone to have space to eat at and a separate fridge freezer allowing us to store enough food for the week, however all the pans bar two are non-induction compatible so do not work on the hob, so with a party of 8 people, trying to feed everyone with 2 small pans is not ideal. We had a lovely time at Penny Liggan which had a fantastic location and would return but be more prepared next time and would hope some of the issues would have been remedied.

The property is fantastic and really well appointed. There was an oven glove missing, but a quick trip to Morrisons solved that. Great location, about 10 mins from Alnwick and only a few minutes from a number of beaches. The property was immaculate on the inside, but sadly previous guest(s) had clearly let their dog use the entire garden as a toilet, and I used 6 bags cleaning up after a dog which wasn't even ours. I don't think it should fall to staff to clean up, which is why I haven't marked it down, but it was definitely the dirtiest garden I've stayed in by far. We would certainly come back to this property, however we will not be booking through Original Cottages due to really poor service after we had left. We left 8am Saturday, and after we got home, we realised we must have left our spare car key fob behind in one of the kitchen drawers. As our car is keyless, you're support to report it to the police, however we knew the cleaners would (or should) still be there. I contacted Original Cottages and explained the situation. Was advised that they would contact the cleaning agency and call me back. No-one phoned and when I called back, I was told by another member of staff that my details had not been passed on and the cleaners would have left by now. They advised that they had forwarded my details on and assured me that someone would call me back, porbably the day after. No-one phoned, and we really needed to know whether or not we could get our keys back. I called again, was told that it wasn't possible to check the property until the end of next week. I explained why it was urgent and that this completely went against what i had been told by two other members of staff. The lady I spoke to said she would make a note and flag it up as urgent as that someone would be in touch within a couple of days - I'm still waiting. Obviously the fact we left the keys was completely our fault, but the way Original Cottages have handled this has been poor to say the least. All it would have taken would have been to contact the cleaning agency whilst they were presumably still at the property, pass on our details so we could arrange for them to be returned. I highly recommend the property, but not the company

We were extremely disappointed with this property.

The price for the week was on offer so we paid nearly half price plus additional fee for two dogs, if we'd paid the full price I would be asking for a refund. It is a spacious and light property, downstairs is comfortable and having an enclosed garden with dogs is a real bonus. However, it was not very clean, the downstairs windows were cloudy inside the double glazing and the windowsills covered in dirt. The plastic cover on the dining table was sticky and curled up at the edges. Although big enough to seat 5 or more you can't get the chairs around it as it is pushed into the corner and very close to the sofa. The cutlery is very cheap and nasty and one cupboard had a load of out of date food in it. The freezer drawers were dirty. The cupboard under the stairs was a mess. The bedrooms were all very nice, comfortable beds and nice furniture. The carpet however was a hard scratchy material and there are a number of stains on it. It was not nice to walk on with bare feet. The main bathroom was large and towels provided were lovely. There needs to be a warning about the shower, it has a very high step up into it and nothing to hold onto when getting out, this would definitely not be easy for someone with mobility issues or an elderly person, I am not surprised there are no photos of the shower as it has a lot of black mould around the door and bottom of tiles. The shower in the top bedroom is over a bath so not able to use this as an alternative. The bedroom balcony is not lovely as described, it has two dirty tatty garden chairs on it and the decking is dirty. The cottage is well positioned, near shops and a short walk to the beach. It is in a quiet area and has nice lawns to the front.

There was a lot we loved about this property!

Location and size of the property was perfect- outdoor space was great! Beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. But- it was rather cluttered- lots of personal nick nacks and photos- there was stuff everywhere! This detracted from the beauty of the property. There were also cob webs everywhere!! It must be impossible to clean with so much stuff everywhere. I think more information is needed re hot water- we struggled for the first 2 days and even when we boosted it on the timer it meant the showers were hot but the bath was only ever Luke warm- this would not be ideal for a family with younger children. The dishwasher looks like it has seen better days- though worked well- The sofas in the lounge at the back/by the kitchen are extremely worn, marked and not very comfortable. If the weather has been better we would happily have sat outside on the lovely garden furniture but this was not to be! The carpets and rugs are marked in places too. The door to the downstairs small double was off its hinge - almost- it meant the door had to stay open and my elderly mum had to walk around it- but not much room to do this! I emailed Sykes on day one to flag this up but did say it wasn’t an urgent matter- I received no reply so not sure if it will be dealt with before the next occupants. Overall we had a lovely stay but the house needs some attention- we have stayed in quite a few Sykes properties and this is the first time I’ve ever given mixed feedback.

Overall a nice cottage that would get 4 stars if it were not for the storage heating system.

We arrived to a freezing cold cottage with storage heaters that had no heat at all apart from the one in the main sitting room, which was struggling to cope. It was telling that there were two electric heaters, a quick phone call for help to the office and the maintenance guy arrived to advise us on how to use them and deliver another heater. If you don’t want to boil at 2 in the morning make sure you adjust them before you go to bed. The rooms were either cold or too hot for the whole stay which made it a less relaxing than it might have been otherwise because the sitting room is nicely furnished. The kitchen was also cold as there is no heating close enough to make an impact on a cold Feb morning. The beds were comfortable and the upstairs bathroom was nice, but the downstairs shower room was freezing again so only used it when really needed. Only odd things were the square dinner plates that were too big for the dishwasher and the washing up bowl was too big for the sink so a bit of a faff to wash up. Otherwise the kitchen seemed well kitted out. The outside space looked nice but we didn’t use it being February.
